Heavy judder in RES sites - yes or no

check your MB-settings.

At mine "Hyperthreading" was "ON" by default. Disabling it did a significant decrease of juddering. Its not gone completly, but i got no judder in stations anymore and at RES i only got slight judders with 10+ NPCs around me. GTX 980 with DSR at 1440p. All settings "high", no AA, no SS, no Blur.

I think after 1.2 CPU>GPU, so tweaking your CPU-Power and playing with you MB-settings could do the trick.

MAN.. i don't get anything like this. Like the OP... I can play fine in some places, and get TERRIBLE judder in others. Sometimes even inside a relatively empty space station, I need to be on loooww settings... In a RES? Game play is terrible. Not only do I get constant "quick" judder, I also get terrible purple fringing when turning my head side to side. I am running a standard clocked 970, i5 cores unparked, all the same tips and tricks the OP has done. These posts where people talk about running at 1440 DSR, with settings on HIGH, and play totally judder free? Part of me just flat out doesn't believe them.

I have an i5 4Ghz and a Stock GTX980. I play everything on High except Shadows which is on medium and it's totally smooth and utterly convincing. I don't get any FPS drops or judder while playing, even in stations or in combat. The only time I even get a slight hiccup is passing planets in SC but then you get this in the normal game without using the DK2 (i think it's graphics loading in or something).

Permanently unparking my CPU cores completely eliminated the cpu load judder when approaching planets, FYI. Others have claimed it didn't help them. For me, it was a night-and-day lightswitch difference. I am the opposite problem as you.. I am in a desperate fight for frame rate.

It certainly is an interesting problem. I have tried unparking cores and that had no effect. I switch off my monitor. I dance naked around enchanted toadstools anticlockwise on a summer solstice etc. but it is all still very random. Fingers crossed that NVIDIA show us a driver or something actually worth getting excited about at their forthcoming event. I have a crazy rig exclusively for VR and it still isn't quite where I want it to be.
Where's that VR driver NVIDIA???

It would be nice to hear if the FD guys are continuing development for the Rift (Direct mode / optimisations etc) or whether it's parked for the moment.

I think there is a cream to treat purple fringing.

For what it's worth, i run the thing in my sig and dont get any issues whatsoever (runs on 1 card of course).
so if you gtx980 guys can get a hold of some 290 give them a test and see how that works. might very well be a driver thing ...
Sure for other games it may be a dowgrade but at least e:d might run better

edit : oh yea, and do share if u manage to get VSR running for it :)

Me too, FD do not seem to check the VR forum. No dev posts, no word, no response for any major problem. This is a bit disapointing, especially when you know they bring some oculus rift for their shows.
They promote VR on one side, but once you get the game you realise you need to spend 1000$ on your rig to get just "less" judder. And it's only one problem here...

I don't ask something big, just some answers, like : "we know you get judder, this is related to a bug in the game engine, we are working on it"...
At least we will know if we need to rob a bank and buy a quantic computer for bounty hunting at RES.

Hello everyone. This is an awesome community. I am so grateful for all of the help over the last few months. I have been with DK2 and Elite for 4 months now and, like many of us, it has been my favorite gaming experience of all time. Just amazing immersion.

I am running a pretty nice rig that many would consider a top of the line every day gaming computer. No, I don't have Titan Z's or something of that nature but I am running a Superclocked GTX 980, 1 TB Solid State Drive, w 8.1, i7 4790k 4.00 ghz, 16 Gig of new ram etc . Most gamers these days are using 600 or 700 series cards and, despite the few SLI 980 users or titan whatever they are called's, I am safely somewhere within probably the top 10% of what most gaming pc's need to run most products on ultra etc. Most of us who are using VR are old enough or established enough to spend a few bux so this is my point fellas . . .

With many of us pushing these pretty darn strong gaming rigs ...MAN...it is TOO BAD that we still have to deal with the Judder issues and low settings. I Know I know...we all talk about it. Just ....man. So close to a perfect simulator. So great. Just...a bit short of such GREATNESS.

I have done everything under the sun to try and maximize the ability to play ED without too much Judder.

- Pretty darn good rig, check
- Pretty much did everything anywhere in these forums to solve judder and clarity beyond my title's list, check.
- The last thing referenced in these forums to improve the VR ED situation I am trying tomorrow. Separate Powered USB for DK2, check (I say with a prayer).

The fact is, while 80% of the time trading or exploring there are no hiccups with judder....combat roles bring it out in RES like no other. I play all THREE roles of explorer, trader, and combat and every time I get excited to go blow ish up...I spend 45 minutes of decent fun in a RES and eventually just get bothered by the judder.

Isn't there something we can do, write, create, produce, explore beyond all the guide recommendations here to eliminate it?! There is so much potential with this VR tech and gaming and we are all so passionate about it...but if we all weren't persistent as all hell we wouldn't even be enjoying DK2 with ED at the 80% I mentioned. Yes I know it's a dev kit...but, LOL, my friends . . . don't rip me a new one here fellas....just had a fun gaming night of 2 hours on ED, poured a glass of Cabernet, and wanted to talk to my faceless friends about my pipe-dream plans to play ed smooth and clear.

Cheers : )

Ok, I had a long reply typed out before my windows decided to reboot on me unannounced. (stupid update).

That being said, here is the short version.

I have a very similar rig to you, save I am running 64gb ram and have a sabertooth x79. I also have an EVGA gtx980 superclocked. I have my settings on high with no modifications. I get a mostly judder free experience, even in stations. I do get judder when approaching certain things like planets for the first time or extraction sites, but it is more like a hickup than judder.

I have my physx set to CPU, all cores on the CPU unparked.
I cannot run with any sort of DSR or supersampling enabled as that completely kills my framerate, but with the HUD set to green I have no issues with text.

The biggest thing was I had to create a custom resolution for my monitor. I set it to 1920x1080@75Hz. What would happen is that windows, using the rift in extended mode would limit the rift to the lowest refresh rate on the system. This setting does make the monitor look like crap and is completely incompatible with it so I turn it off.

Lately I have been using VRdesktop. This software clones the monitor and displays it on the rift in a full 3D way that looks very cool and works great (I have it in my startup). As such I do not even bother turning the monitor on anymore (it is just there to satisfy VRdesktop) and infact have been toying with the idea of creating a dongle for this PC to emulate and report that there is a 1080p@75hz monitor connected to save space. VRdesktop will not run without a second monitor for some reason, and tbh I could use the deskspace. I am an EE so I tend to think in hardware solutions :) This machine only gets used to play VR games so this works for me.

That being said, you are free to ask me any questions, I go by CMDR ThunderSqueak in the game so you can add me and we can talk. ^^

a judder solution for you all(DK2)

hello folks

iv been playing around with a judder solution that i accidentally found a couple of weeks ago, but replicating it was problematic, however, i think iv got the instructions nailed, so lets see how we get on ;)

what we are going to do here is force the game into 60hz low persistence, currently the game forces us to use 75hz, at 60hz we are 25% better off on gpu usage, so judder becomes 'less' of an issue, i say less because if the frame rate drops below 60, its still juddersville, however, we now have atleast 20% less work for the gpu to do, giving us greater head room.

this may not work for everyone, and some people may not like the flicker involved with 60hz low persistence

ok, this is how im configured to run elite dangerous

msi afterburner for osd monitoring
aero snap is disabled
running sweetfx with custom setting from the VR sweet fx thread, smaa is turned off in the settings file, and in game fxaa is used(thats just my preference)
rift is set to secondary display, and set to 'left' of main monitor in nvidia control panel

ok, the instructions, good luck ha

start the game, make sure everything is as it should be, 75fps, all good

save and exit

start nvidia control panel, enable DSR factors if not already done so, and enable all factors upto 4k
change resolution of rift to 2560x1440p@60hz, dont forget the 60hz bit!!! save and apply
look at rift display, everything will be messed up and dark with a flicker! it could also be very bright(60hz LP off) dont worry, should be ok
now, make sure both elite dangerous launcher and NCP are in the centre of your display
goto 'set up mulitple displays' in nvidia control panel, and make rift 'primary' display and apply, at this point youll have to use 1 eye to peek at the rift to see the NCP, you can now drag the NCP onto your main monitor but leave the ED launcher on the rifts display

start ED
image will appear on your monitor but in 'rift' mode(duel image with head tracking), this is good, navigate to options once in game

at this point note the 'state' of the refresh rate and fps limiter options, they should be 'reded' out, if so were cooking on gas, if they are white, dont worry, continue on
ok, change monitor to 'primary' in game options and apply, the refresh rate and fps limit should now be 'white' in options
image should now come on rift, and using you OSD should now be 60fps, and 'darkish' indicating 60hz Low persistence is ON and working, if the image is very bright, LP is off, and you will see a blurring of everything
you can now test the game, however, i believe it to be better, and even smoother when rift is set to 'secondary' display, but theres not much in it, so have a good go of the game at this point if 60hz LP has been achieved

so, moving on for those who didnt get the correct options or low persistence working, or want to make rift secondary display for even more buttery goodness
exit game
make main monitor 'primary' in nvidia control panel and apply
restart game, do the same as above, just change display in game options to 'secondary' and save, hopefully, your now at 60hz with LP on, if LP is off(display very bright) try changing resolution ingame, and it should turn on, then change resolution back to desired res, this usually works, but only when rift is secondary display for some reason

if it hasnt worked, try again, just repeat the process, sometimes it can take a couple of goes to get the in game options to trip out and allow LP

the results for me have been quite profound, although 60hzLP isnt quite as good as 75hzLP for the low persistence side of things, there seems to be a more fluid action to the actual game rendering, head tracking has always been good for me, but i didnt realize how much micro stutter was going on until i played at 60hz, again, this just may be my setup

my ingame settings are

resolution x1.2 dsr(nvidia control panel with smoothing set to 20%, again, my preference)
AO off
blur off
bloom off
AA fxaa
low/medium shadows(ultra if im not in RES)
effects low
everything else high/ultra, again, your preference really

i know its abit long winded, iv just tried to make it clear for everyone to understand and have a go at, in real time it takes 2mins to do

hope it helps someone
any problems getting it to work, post below and well see what we can do
anyone who finds a better way of getting the game to allow 60hz let us know below :)

peace

MM

its a big GPU hog using in game DSR, i use the NCP DSR, and set resolution in game to 2103x1183(x1.2) if i manually create a custom res, then the image is screwed up on elite when i select that resolution

the reason for setting rift desktop res to x1.2 is to force LP at 60hz on ED, this is the only way i could make it do it

What do you mean by physx set to cpu? Please elaborate.

Also, someone said to turn hyperthreading off in bios... Can someone tell us normals how to do that please? Lol.

Thanks!

I have not turned hyperthreading off.

if you go into the nvidia control pannel, on the left hand side there is under 3D settings a setting called " Configure Surround, PhysX" you can change the PhysX setting there on the right hand side with the drop down menu. For me, this helped get rid of a LOT of jitter that Iwas getting before.

If you board is a gaming board, in the bios under the advanced settings usually, you can tweak things like hyperthreading. Not every board would have that option. But like I said, I did not need to do that on my rig. I go by "If it isn't broke, don't fix it". This is why I am also still using an older nvidia driver. I tried the newer ones but would get odd glitches and crashes, all of which I have bug reported but not heard back on.

My current driver is 9.18.13.4475 ... 344.75 on windows 8.1(I have also had 7 running on this machine but switched to 8.1 a few months back).

For the Physx thing, go to nVidia control panel, then to the SLI tab. There is an option to enable or disable SLI, and next to that an option to choose wether the Gpu or the CPU does the PhysX effects.

Edit : ninja'd

Running the game at 60hz has REALLY improved the game play for me in my 970. I can now play in a RES on low, and get just about total fluid motion.

I suppose he managed to enable it somehow? If not it is a waste of time. The blur of high persistance is at least as annoying as judder.

Edit: Yeah it seem he managed to kick in LP with 60 hz.

I wonder if we AMD users can do this. I bet this makes RES sites better because my card struggles with 75 FPS at low but it wont dip below 60.

If you find a way with an AMD setup, be sure to post the results up here. I didn't realise you could run LP at under 75 hz but if it could be tricked at 60, i'd be interested to see the resulting quality.
