Roccat Power Grid

I don't really see the point of going through all the work to use your smartphone as a controller, when there are already tons of free macro programs you can use to do the same task faster and more efficiently.

Its not much work at all, and it adds immersion.

Brian :)

Indeed, if I could get it working in one evening... Plus that's no smartphone, it's an otherwise redundant 10" screen in pinkie distance of my throttle.
And the BSR button shouts "RUN AWAY" when you press it, what's not to love? :)

Hey guys - I haven't played ED for ages and just getting back into it after getting Horizons. I used power grid great previously but now for some reason cannot get it to register key presses in the game (as the game lost bindings somehow).
So I've tried running it as admin as people suggest - no dice.

The default grids of theirs to control windows7 etc work, but the ED ones will not register keypresses either in the game to map the controls, nor if I say open a text file and see if button presses appear when I press the grid images.
It's connected fine, so can anyone suggest why the ED grids I have (which used to be fine) suddenly don't register presses on the PC at all please?

Appreciate any help as this is driving me nuts!
Thanks :)

Somebody bought me a Samsung S6 at Christmas - I don't use android or ios on any device especially my phone so I guess this at least gives me a reason to turn it on finally... I suppose android has to be good for something!

Some of the reviews of the android app are saying quite a few features are behind in-app purchases but there's no explanation of what is free and what is behind a paywall. Also you apparently need to have an account with them to use their app. I dislike being forced to sign up to a website for no good reason.

I want to try the app, but if I have to create an account to do it, I may pass.

From what I've read, Power-Grid is abandonware now. And Roccat are developing a super-bloatware program to replace it. Their "Swarm" software that is going to try to do everything. Yet probably master of none.

I'll be looking at other virtual keyboard solutions thanks.

Using Power-Grid is pretty easy to do if you have some spare tablets or large smart phones. I have two tablets on armature brackets either side of me, 7inc and 10inch tablets. You can find lots of different styles of grids to use via the website that others have created. Or have a go at creating your own with the power-grid windows software. Works pretty well in my opinion.

The new Swarm app, well you can try that out if you like but its nowhere near finished yet. Power-grid will continue to get updates from time to time and has a vast number of grids to choose from.

SC and ED, plenty of grids to choose from. And I hope to try and make one for Infinity: Battlescape as well once the game is a little further along in development.

I'm not certain there are any other tools to create such nice looking tablet touch screen interfaces. Not as well developed as power-grid and with such a huge number of custom built grids to choose from.

But I welcome any suggestions, its always good to try new things :)

I'm abandoning Powergrid in favor of LEA Extended Input

It's much more powerful than Powergrid and it's not abandonware (in fact the developer is responsive to feature requests!)

I don't think it looks very nice though. power-grid gives a much nicer tablet touch screen interface for using in-game, and its not abandonware they do update it and grids are being posted on the site every day. It just recieves less updating now they are working on Swarm. I'll give it a try though, so thanks for posting it.

Any others?

I think the greater graphical flexibility means LEA will look much nicer than Powergrid IF you can take some extra time/talent to set it up. I think the example screenshots are a slight case of "programmer art" (no offense intended, if people involved are reading this). Once you get a designer in there, they can do more than in Powergrid, and I think the results will be suitably impressive.
I'm slammed with other projects at the moment, but I'm looking forward to someday having some time to do something slick with LEA and hopefully prove my theory. :)

Powergrid has not been updated in over two years. To me that indicates it's abandoned - that means I should not expect it to get any of the fixes or updates I would like, not soon, not any time time in the foreseeable future. People posting new grids on a website means people still use it but it's not really the same thing. :(

That said, Powergrid is simpler, and it comes with lots of really nice art assets so I agree it is definitely quick and easy to get it looking really good. LEA is a newcomer (I think) and will take a bit more time to accumulate that quality of art assets, but to me it looks like a better foundation for the long term.

Another thing nice about powergrid is that it allows you to design the UI on the computer. Trying to arrange the UI directly on the tablet is more awkward IMHO because tablets are more awkward. Maybe LEA allows it? I should double check but I think with LEA at the moment you do it mostly on the tablet. Some people will like that. I don't.

LEA is one to keep an eye on then for sure, thanks.

I've asked Roccat to maybe come and better explain the new Swarm software. I hope it does not turn out to be bloatware, that would be a shame.

They just updated their soft, it allows you to design the UI on the computer now. Way better than just with the tablet, I agree.

mmmh... I have been using Power-Grid since the E:D Beta, but recently I've started playing with LEA as it seems to offer more options.

The two things that I don't seem to be able to replicate in LEA that Power-Grid was great for are to do with sequencing a string of commands, so I'm wondering if anyone has managed to figure out either...

Firstly in Power-Grid I was able to set Power Pips to a defined level via a group of buttons, so for example I had a button that would set Engine to 4 pips and Systems to 2 pips by sending the following macro -

d O;100; u O;100;d P;100;u P;100;d P;100;u P;100;d P;100;u P;100;d ];100;u ];100;d ];100;u ];100;d ];100;u ];100;d ];100;u ];100;

Where O=Balance Power, P=System Power and ]=Engine Power

And then I had a Request Docking button that would send -

d T;100;u T;100;u Y;100;d Y;100;d Y;100;u Y;100;d RETURN;100;u RETURN;100;d DOWN;100;u DOWN;100;d RETURN;100;u RETURN;100;d R;100;u R;100;d R;100;u R;100; d T;100;u T;d ];100;u ];100;d ];100;u ];100;d ];100;u ];100;d ];100;u ];100;d P;100;u P;100;d P;100;u P;100;d P;100;u P;100;d P;100;u P;100;d P;100;u P;d F;100;u F;

Where T=Left UI Panel, Y=Next Panel Tab, R=Previous Panel and F=Main Lights, that would target the station, send the request docking, re-route power to shields and turn on my main lights. (I still then bounce off the station walls, but that's more a result of alcohol levels than a Power-Grid function)

I can't seem to work out how to replicate either of these types of macro's in LEA; Can anyone help please?

Kro.

Cool app!

Thanks to razorwire about noting you can run it on a tablet too, not at home, but having my tablet as an additional set of BIG button for me to tap is going to be excellent!!

Sorry, but what is LEA?

Hi,

Very much like both your desk setup and the Power Grid setup.

I see you have "Target Power Plant" which on your Trello card is a Macro. Is this a Macro in Power Grid or elsewhere?

I'm interested to see how it works.

Thanks & Regards

From memory, the powerplant is "usually" a certain number down the list of sub-components. CMDR previously have made a macro which is a best guess, say 7 steps down the sub-menu and then have to adjust for inaccuracy on the fly.

OK, I have teh stoopid - tablet is a wireless connected device but main workstation is wired ethernet (separate channels). There's a USB connector on the tablet for managing the memory/storage that plugs in to the workstation.

How can I make the wired connection able to see & get input from the tablet? It's got to be something simple; in this thread I've seen multiple tablets set up to a (probably) wired workstation. What am I missing?
