Newcomer / Intro Sagan Terminal + ... got a bit too close .... !

ED - Detention Ctre.jpg
Well ! I was only having a look !
Next thing ........ BANG ! I'm dead ..... shot to pieces !
And now I'm in here (had a choice and thought I should serve my punishment ;) )
Yes, I know ! I was warned in another post (at least I can remember that ..... :D )
Just thought I have a little look anyway ......... I was still 3 km away ........ and ....... BANG !

In truth I thought they were going to let land very close and do nothing .... What sort of game is this ! ..... and then ...... BANG !!!
I was really pleased. (y)
Think I lost all my credits ...... about 250 000 ...... haven't checked yet ...... I'm dead ....... I shouldn't expect otherwise. ;)
Edit: In Italics.
No! I retained my credits. Maybe because I'm still a Noob .......

Why is Sagan Terminal off limits?

You shouldn't have lost all credits unless your ship cost that much to rebuy.
Thanks Xious. I've corrected my "loss of credit" in my initial post, although I had expected to lose them. Maybe me "serving my time" saved me my credit. ST being "off-limits" is indicated by that +ve sign and I'd expected to shot at. Not killed maybe ......

There are bases on planetary surfaces that have names ending in one or more plus symbols these are not dockable, the plus symbols are an indication of security levels, and are target locations for some mission types I believe. (As someone who rarely bothers with missions I am unsure of that last bit.)

Kudos for trying stuff out to see what happens (and not complaining when things go BANG!). (y)

You probably got a trespass warning at a range of a few kilometres out. After the warning you have 1 minute to leave the trespass zone. If you don't leave in time the base becomes hostile to you and opens fire. Your starter ship is no match for the base's defences but in a bigger ship with good shields such an event is survivable.

PS: You never loose your credits after getting destroyed. Just the rebuy value of your ship is subtracted from your balance.

Thanks Krieger. I did get the warning, but my arrival had been interrupted numerous times with loss of any internet connection. Each time I re-connected, I was back out about 200km short of the Terminal with no repeat of the warning. However, I was going in irrespective, and the internet connection interruptions had me overlooking any warnings. ;)

There is a wrong option ? My options were Detention or a New Ship ....... I took Detention and it looks ok ....... New Ship the wrong option ?

No, the "new ship" option will give you a new Sidewinder and your current ship will be um... eradicated. Not a good choice. It's easier now that you have to work a bit to get a Freewinder but it's worth bearing in mind.

This becomes more important later in the game when you have a more expensive ship and modules especially if they are engineered.
The options are as I recall.
Rebuy your current ship and all its modules.
Rebuy your current ship with selected modules, an option if you don’t have enough money*.
Take the Sidewinder in one of the old? Starter systems, the option if you cannot rebuy your current ship.

*Select another ship in your fleet and remotely sell it to raise money to rebuy your current ship.

The rebuy price is 5% of the total cost of your ship and its modules, this is unimportant at first as the Sidewinder you started with was free, but as you start changing and adding modules or buying other ships it starts to cost to rebuy which is why we are told never to fly without the rebuy and actually you should always have a minimum of three rebuys available just in case.

I'm surprised the "5% option" isn't covered by all CMDRs. It seems such a small amount to have constantly put aside. Three rebuys ? You mean 15% ? If so, I'm surprised, as I hope never to get into that much trouble (to have to use that many). ;)

5% can still be several millions for suitably outfitted medium or large ships.

Does that mean you just lose that ship (and its modules) and just write it off ? This is the way you save your clean CMDR record ?

he's teasing. he means he just doesn't get destroyed.

regarding 'rebuy option', in practical terms the only reason not to rebuy your current ship as is is to e.g. teleport back to the bubble. this or not having enough credits, which you are already advised against :)

Ah! Trust me to fall for it !
Mind you ....... it would be seen by some as the ultimate disgrace ! And here's me, not out of the Noob Zone, and I've been down once ALREADY ! ;)

If they have same cannons as stations, yes such event is survivable, if you leave right away. Any loitering in area would be fatal.

Correct. Previously I played "Iron Man" mode where I would do a "Clear Save" every time my ship was destroyed, however the engineer qualification process each time became off-putting. So now I play a sort of "plastic man" mode - I don't do a rebuy but take the free sidewinder at my starting location (or AY Indi for recent account) instead - that way I have not made an "insurance claim" so my statistics show claims=0.

e.g:

.........

I admit I try not to get destroyed* but unfortunately it does happen - I just take the freewinder option instead of making an insurance claim and rebuying the destroyed ship.

* I try not to take on things I can't get out of - so no fight club for example and I don't like the idea of killing alien lifeforms.

What you do lose when a ship is destroyed is any cargo being carried, any unsold exploration data and any unclaimed bounties from destroying wanted ships.
I not sure you meant this, but I note I lost all my hard-earned exploration data regarding a system I had explored and that's been tough to swallow. :(

Some people play what is sometimes called iron man, if they get destroyed they wipe their save and start over as a new commander just as if the old one had been killed.
