Are some special snowflakes who paid more already playing the DFM?

Oh. I'm a 'special snowflake' - <3 <3 <3 :) :D

I'd have given them the money for the kickstarter, even if there were no perks, alpha access, DDF whatever, because... WANT TO PLAY A NEW VERSION OF ELITE.

If Frontier turned round in 2 years time and said, 'Sorry chaps we're running low on cash again, we need another kickstarter/crowd sourced thingy to get planetary landings in the game properly - I'd probably stump up the same amount of cash again, or more, just because out of pretty much any game... I WANT TO PLAY A NEW VERSION OF ELITE.

If that means you now think I'm a special snowflake and have drunk Braben's kool aid, and my judgement can't be trusted, you are probably correct. :D

As I understand it, they are doing a staggered release of the DFM for SC so not everyone will get to play it first.

It will make sense so as to bed in network code and to keep early bug tickets manageable. There will be uproar with some of the backers tho - either that or massive backtracking by them

Actually gravity is ridiculously weak. Take a paper clip, hold a magnet over it. A tiny fridge magnet if you have one. Here's the thing. Your little tiny magnet exerting just a tiny fraction of the electromagnetic force if you put it close above the paper clip, the paper clip (assuming it's metal and not plastic coated) will jump UP to the magnet, when it does that and stays there, your tiny little fridge magnet has just overcome the gravitational force of the ENTIRE PLANET.

That's how weak gravity is and accelerating even in a normal plane is overcoming gravity and now operating stronger than gravity of planet earth by a few times. In space you could do that even more. So strangely gravity in space of an accelerating ship would be MUCH stronger than planet earth.

Hope this helps.

Ex-astrophysicist, currently a teacher.

Exactly, you had spoken for yourself. There is no mass gravity pulling and if you are talking about space shuttle using fire the like in NASA rockets that needed oxygen to thrust fire in acceleration otherwise the fire will not work in space then it is indeed NASA ancient problem. You cannot comprehend how space work with our technology today which is truly prehistoric.

If you are a teacher then feel free and help NASA by inventing a light-speed spaceship without the need of ancient and prehiostoric fire because I am taking it to the grave with me.

Did anyone notice that when he crashed the ship the first time, some parts tumbled away weightlessly into space while the main hull fell onto the platform as under gravity? Looked really buggy.
Yeah it's like this was a pre-Alpha unfinished build of a dogfight module and not the final retail release of the game. what?

I think there must be some explanation - lot of bad flack between SC and ED communities comes from early days of ED Kickstarter. David has been called a copycat, having no shiny trailers, etc.

How much of this is just a cultural difference between America and Britain, given we Brits tend to downplay things? Also Wing Commander got global brand awareness as the first big game on PC (by which I mean wasn't it the first for good EGA graphics + use of the SoundBlaster card?), when Origin were really pushing boundaries, whereas Elite was more just part of the 8-bit explosion in the UK?

I will say this I hope we see some improvement in the detail of the planets rendered in ED. I'd say in comparison they don't look as nice as the SC one..

I think I'm going to bow out of this thread gracefully.. have fun commanders!

Well, currently ED planets pass bare minimum for viewing from distance. They have no LOD, have no very detailed terain and atmosphere, etc. So clearly we will see improvements later down the road.

Have fun you too! :)

Yeah, DFM is already 5 months or so late - more delayed than E D (since some are making comparisons).

It's three months late, going on four. (Original plan was for release in December. Original plan was also for a much simpler module than what we're now getting.) So if they get it out in the next couple of weeks which it sounded like was what they are hoping for it won't be any more delayed than the ED Beta is... Of course, I'd much rather just see ED and SC both just release things when they're ready rather than keeping to old time estimates.

That's what you always get isn't it though? People who don't understand they can like two similar things rather than love one and viscously hate the other. Fanboy mentality. Or tribalism as you called it. It's a shame, but it always happens.

However at this point this discussion has been already ten times more civil than any thread on CIG forums would be. So I will take Mobius arguments about why SC currently doesn't live up to par anyway over **** ED gets in SC community.
That's true but probably owed completely to the fact that this forum/community is so much smaller. Things wont get as bad or escalate as quickly as there aren't as many people to fan the flames :p

It would explain not knowing Elite in first place, sure. However rest of it was just nasty gibberish at that point. Also some people credit CR for bringing spot light to ED Kickstarter. I would politely disagree - I think it was ED KS community efforts like driving book crowdfunding and keeping word out there which pushed us over 50% and thus kept spirit and hope alive. I know, I was there. 24/7 :)

What's amazing is how much we DO understand given our current level of technology. Considering where we were at just over a hundred years ago and compare that to now... God bless Einstein (and that amazing year of 1905), Hubble, Heisenberg, Feynmann, Rosen and all the rest.

Einstein, Newton, Hooke is a Genius, Leonardo Da'Vinci is a Great Genius.

We will have another Great Genius again not far into the future after a great depopulation decline. :)

Just admit FDs business model and the way they treat lower tier backers completely suck. Because that is the truth, no matter from which angle you look at it.

Why would I admit something I don't agree with? :S

That would be a weird thing to do...

Is it the perfect business model? No.
Does it "completely suck"? No.

That's also true, but it doesn't stop certain forum members trying their hardest to make up for it by taking EVERY opportunity to fan the flames.

Fortunately, their blatant attempts to do this are so obvious it's almost laughable.

I understood it was due to be released Nov 2013.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/star-citizen
"Funded! This project was successfully funded on Nov 19, 2012."

and

"The people who pledge for their spaceships will get to test-fly them long before the general public. 12 months in, we will allow the early backers to play the multiplayer space combat Alpha"

Nov 19 2012 to April 12 2014 is 17 months in, hence 5 months late. Unless I missed something. (EDIT as typo in dates)

What you are responding to here was not posted by me as indicated in your post, by the way.

If we're going to play this game, I'll play and I can beat almost everyone except Michael Brookes, T.J. and Steve O.B Have (and a few others)

So let's not get into "I have been here longer than you" ;)

Yes Alien, I've come to the conclusion that you've been Elite's biggest fan since the late 1960's :p

I'd put Maxwell in there as well if we're talking genius'. And of course Tesla.
