Weirdly enough I haven't played ED in over a month mostly NMS, Forza Horizons and L4D1. It's weird I don't miss it as much as I did ffe I think it's been said before that player content would have added to it so much. Look at Eve etc it's players who make it not the company they just give them the tools.

In regards to potential space legs in 2020 update: Is it possible to make this a reality in existing engine? If not, then they would have to wait for next gen ED where they use a FPS - space physics compatible engine? Or pull a Bethesda and try to revamp the existing ED engine and do a cut/paste of space leg features used in the Zoo Tycoon engine for alien flora/fauna? If that's even remotely a possibility that is

Yeah, I've no doubt FD are hard at work on the next Big Thing. I fear that by the time they actually get it out the door it'll be too little, too late. They've done some welcome, commendable stuff in the past year or so, but even those things (mining, exploration, new player onboarding overhaul) are receding in the rear-view mirror. I'm sure they're pulling in some nice cash with Arx, but that isn't exactly lighting the player base on fire with excitement. Maybe their shareholders anyway.
It's why I've not fired up Elite in weeks and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Oh, I love Elite - gotten hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of it - but I need space legs and atmo planets to get me excited again.

I've not posted since April 9th, but I have an excuse. I got ill with some mystery illness that I'm only now just about getting over. Well, I did also leave the game, took apart my cockpit chair and started playing only ESO. I do long for the relaxation of flying around in space, and, unless the game has changed a lot in 6 months, that's really all I miss. I'll probably play ED again someday but only when I have time to wander the galaxy with no purpose beyond tourism.
Welcome back ! There's still plenty to do just flying around in the galaxy exploring.
You can only play Elite so much to begin with if you aren't a "space-trading game guy". I imagine all the veterans are getting bored, and all the newbies that came in last Christmas have trickled away by now.
The II's were not quite as good as they made them sound, and the last one kind of ended with a whimper. I think people were looking for the next II to be really impressive to make up for it. The new generation ship is pretty interesting, but it isn't sleeper ship Hispania interesting.
