News Ship naming and Name Plates – how it will work

Hi everyone,

There’s been a number of questions from Commanders regarding ship naming and how ship name plates will work so we wanted to give you a little more information about how these features will work when they’re released.

In-game ship naming

When you have named your ship in-game, your ship name will appear in multicrew grouping and in your HUD. In addition to this, in beta 5, when other people scan you, or target you in space they will be able to see your ship name in their UI. This feature will be available for all players of Elite Dangerous (both base game and Horizons players) including Xbox One, upcoming PS4 release and PC Commanders.

Cosmetic Ship Name Plates

The ship name plates will offer an added layer of cosmetic personalisation for Commanders wanting to wear their name with pride, much like paint jobs and other cosmetics currently available in the store.

Name plates will be made available in themed packs. These packs will contain three designs, each of which will be available in three colours: black, white, and grey. This makes a total of 9 nameplates per pack. After purchase, each pack will be available for use across all of your ships (Ship launched fighters and SRVs don’t have name plates) and each pack of 9 variant plates will be coming into store at just £2/€2.5/$3. This means that purchasing one pack of name plates will allow you to use that style across all of your current and future ships, at the same time and rename each individual ship as many times as you like. We believe this flexibility offers Commanders great value and is a great way to help support the continued development of Elite Dangerous.

Thanks!

€2.5 seems reasonable to me.

But you should consider to offer at leas one of that in one version free to all commander.

Bait and switch tactic, ages old... How to make users pay willingly for nameplates? I know, let's bait them that it will not be visible at all, and then later appear as "good masters" and have them pay for the name on hull.
Scummy cash grab in an AAA title still. Sorry not sorry cash cows, pardon, players. FDEV is starving from over delivering us the features in Horizons and they have so little money because it all went into developing AMAZING NEW CONTENT WHICH WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT AND IT WILL MELT PLAYER FACES OFF! And we totally didn't buy "known Hollywood movie IP" for wads of cash, promise!

Sigh...

Or, alternatively, one could look at this thing called reality and see that people already claimed to be willing to pay for them until the whole 'not visible unless purchased' nonsense started. But feel more than willing to stand on an imaginary hill to look down upon the 'sheeple', if thats' your thing.

As for the IP? Has anyone here ever suggested they didnt pay for it? Kinda sounds as if you're making up stuff to feel better than people you also just made up...

Great! I bet I'm not the only one who has been waiting for this since... I dunno, late Beta at least ^.^

Glad to hear that CMDRs in Oceania were *always* going to be able to see the ship names of CMDRs in Eurasia. We sure overreacted to this big misunderstanding! Glad to know that we were wrong the whole time, and that every communication on the matter up till now was just a typo or verbal gaffe; something even a simpleton such as myself should have easily recognized. After all, the notion that the visibility of our scanned ship names in the HUD would be held for ransom behind a paywall is an idea so obscene, so cynical and idiotic, that anyone with an ounce of common sense would immediately dismiss it out of hand. Boy do *I* feel silly for getting so worked up over nothing! Turns out I have always been happy with the ship naming system and I never had any problem with it.

Buy one, give FD some money for food and futher development. name decals will be cheap.

A game such as this needs a steady revenue stream. Anybody can afford this pricing if they can afford to play the game in the first place. Amazon servers aren't cheap.

Totally not my problem. I'm not an investor, I'm not here to keep the servers running - not that I believe that is an issue for one second.

Frontier do not *need* our money. They just want it.

This was always how I figured it was going to happen, not sure why people thought otherwise. The only surprises to me are a) that you buy name plates in 3 packs and b) it's about the decoration/decal element that goes with them rather than the fonts.

I'm frankly disappointed by the naked and billious contempt some people in this thread have for those who are quite rightly objecting to having to pay for a basic nameplate and ID tag. This sort of behaviour isn't even remotely acceptable.

Hi everyone

hi! great news and well done! was just about time to avoid a full scale riot! nameplates, you know, NAMEPLATES!, that's indeed a sensitive matter :D

speaking of which, i would never, NEVER, glue a nameplate on any of my ships. a name DECAL, however, would be an entirely different thing. any chance this could happen?

is a great way to help support the continued development of Elite Dangerous.

this part could be toned down quite a bit, imo. you're neither indie developers nor a ngo. keep in mind that not the entirety of your customer base is stupid. :D

Allow me to enlighten you as to what actually went down.

Basically here's what happened:

FD was going to release the feature of ship names with a built in pay wall, i.e. you needed to pay for a nameplate livery in order for other people to see your ships name. As stated in the initial 2.3 Beta change log:

Ship Naming
● If it's not our ship and they have no name plates, then we don't know the ship's name.

Sandro Sammarco even repeated how it will work on one of the live streams. Lots of threads popped up from the player base saying, "That's not kosher FD."

And so having gotten caught out on this FD backpedalled:

Except they pretended as if the community had simply misunderstood and phrased the back pedalling as if it was intended to be this way all along:

All's well that ends well of course but the people who called FD to task on this deserve a genuine thank you from everyone else in the community in my opinion. It is because of the people that spoke up that you now have a complete ship naming feature in the game compared to what FD wanted to do in the beginning.

You are most welcome :)

Can't rep you again, so here's a virtual-virtual one.

It's like they're intentionally rewriting how this all went down. But they should know better.

Because they literally wrote otherwise, and then literally confirmed that in the livestream. Thats why. It was also quite clear here and on reddit what people thought about it, so they changed it.

Marketing messed up, it got fixed, thats all. Lets not whitewash history though.

I could argue that more money from cosmetics= more focus on cosmetics and less focus on gameplay. But yeah whatever.

Since this was part of the game layout planned from EARLY days this was no surprise, and many players HAVE been waiting for it as part of immersion which is part of gameplay... and in fact for reasons like this actually play the hame.
So do not cheapen the game for others just because it is not why YOU are playing, but certainly makes others very happy that their gameplay is enhanced.

Hopefully now Reddit people can stop discussing about this Once for all.
Thanks for clarifying FDev.

As expected... all that cheese and whine for nothing! But wait, we have some players still unhappy with the implementation of ships naming... as expected

It's because of people discussing it that this was changed. FDev aren't clarifying, they're amending without giving credit where credit is due. The people who spoke up about this deserve your thanks as much as FD does.

That "cheese and whine" is why this change happened friend :)
