Ship Naming

Ship naming in the original Design Discussions Forum was a bit more involved than just slapping a name on a ship. I hope it's still in that general direction :)

•A ship can be given a name by a commander
•A ship name can only be registered at a reputable space dock
•There is a fee to register the name
•Names are not unique
•Ship names can be changed using the same procedure

•Swear words detected in the name will be considered a crime in some of the more puritan systems (resulting in a crime)
•As long as the ship is not destroyed, a named ship earns a tithe of reputation the commander earns
•This additional reputation is applied to the commander whilst he/she is piloting the ship (up to a cap – though the ship can keep earning more reputation)
•News feed bulletins will reference named ships with enough reputation, highlighting accomplishments achieved by them
•Some missions and events may require minimum/maximum thresholds to trigger

•When a named ship is destroyed, bonus reputation associated with it is lost

Thanks for the update OP, didn't watch this stream. Probably not a critical feature but something a lot of CMDRs wanted, my humble self included. Thanks FD !

I now see frontiers cunning plan to finish this commitment to season 2 and start selling us season 3......

2.3 avatar creation.
Create a personalised avatar that, if you look carefully from the dev 3rd person camera, you can see the face you created actually piloting your ship!

2.4 ship naming.
Finally you can personalise your ship by having any name of your choice printed on the side of your ship, font size 8, if you look carefully from the dev 3rd person camera, you can see the name boldly blazoned on the side.

40 euro for season 3 please, just in time for Christmas!

;)

Yea. It by itself doesn't seem to be a big deal, but i am looking forward to slap a name on some of my ships. (Actually even different names... *g* )

This is a serious "it's about time"... Everyone wins... Naming the ship really will make it feel personal for most of us that play casually. And there will be an enormous boom of salty tears for the griefer/psycho killers that like to randomly kill a ship smaller than theirs for no reason (destroying your named ship will increase production of tears!)

It would be a hellish job for an FD intern(s) to have to comb through allllll the ship name submissions to cull said PKers penchant for venality in name choice.

Volunteers?

Cockpit Cats! - Yes please, pretty please.... …

Wonderful idea. Let's place cats into a zero G environment and then add furry dices or laser pointers dots that jump around. What could go wrong…

And then, let's dog fight. The cats won't know what hit them (hint, the walls of the ship).

That's really evil.

After being a resident on this forum for the past few years, its safe to say that its not just PKers who have 'a penchant for venality'.

As much as i think the idea of giving your ship some personality is awesome. It is almost inevitable to not come across ships named "SS y0l0sWag#420" and the likes. So i'm a bit torn on this

Well, was anything revealed about that aspect, what if you, yourself only can see it?

What fun is not showing off your ridiculous ship name? Assuming expletives will be deleted... So I can't name my ship the "bad word for poop" Monkey. [knocked out]

Can't wait for this. I don't mind paying for extra naming rights but the first one should be free IMO.

Because you know people will just work around said things with replacement words and whatnot?
And at what point does another pilot really care what you name your ship though?
If its anything like some commander name's it only makes at least me roll my eyes, though yes, I will admit to chuckling the first 1-4 times, then it just becomes silly then rapidly annoying.

Would assume, like now with commander names, you won't see the name unless you scan the ship. That way, if you're really afraid you'll lose your lunch or be offended or annoyed; don't scan them.

That is good news from FDev. Nicely tagged onto the end of the stream as the last comment.

I did chew them out a bit over Ship Naming in another thread, simply as we were told by DB himself that we'd have it.
Anyway, it is good news that they are working on Ship Naming, lets just hope its on our hulls and HUD.

Well done FDev.

Looking forward to this one. I hope we get two lines to work with so we can put an identification number under the name.

True. But you can already do that with player names. In-universe, it seems a lot more reasonable for people to be naming their ships that kind of thing than to be called that themselves.

Funny thing about the ship name Ive used in every game Ive ever played with spaceships in it...its not a swear word or rude word and it still hits the filter. Take a lotta the novelty away...so yeah whatever...
