Yeah, pretty much everyone I know that wants Instant transfer are also players of NMS, with a few exceptions. But the people who want a delay? They span the range from all walks within the game, Open, Solo, PVP and PVE, BGS, and Explorers. Almost no one seems to want instant transfers.
My 2 cents:
Up until now I've been able to maintain my own little fantastic sci fi "illusion" that I've insulated my character in. As CMDR Jarred Dumas I've bummed around the bubble doing odd jobs as a kind of intergalactic no account vagabond. I've been inspired by the Distant Worlds Expedition and taken myself to the furthest point man can travel from the bubble, and then triumphantly returned, if not a true explorer at least a pilot whose given it his best stab. CMDR Jarred Dumas has his name on literally thousands of objects in between here and Beagle Point, and has even earned Elite status for his efforts. Jarred has run smuggling missions of which he isn't proud but have propelled him to Elite status in trade, spent hundreds of hours visiting and wooing the engineers and outfitting all of his considerable fleet of ships, but most especially his beloved golden skinned FdL with which together he and her have struggled to beat his own inherent lack of skill to become Dangerous at combat.
Jarred has spent well over fifteen hundred hours forging not only his own destiny in the Elite Universe, but much more importantly
his identity within the confines of this wonderful game.
Maybe I'm just coming off like someone who needs therapy, but what I'm clumsily trying to say is that within this community and this game I've created my own story for this character, as lame as that may sound to some of you. I imagine I'm not the only one. I really hope not.
I grew up idolizing Han Solo...and Jarred Dumas
is my Han Solo. The fictional illusion my character has dwelled in through all of that space, time, and all those (continuing!) experiences is nothing less than that: an illusion. Up until now, I've never had any problem maintaining that illusion because I truly love this game for it's size, scale, and ambition.
I love Elite, which is why I've argued so strenuously of late against a feature I feel will destroy that illusion for me. There are literally thousands of well thought out, well articulated reasons for and against instant transfer and I don't need to rehash them for anybody, but what this whole argument boils down to for me at a personal enjoyment level is whether that illusion will remain intact, or if the whole house of cards will come tumbling down and I'll finally see Elite for what it is: a shallow, trite mess of features stuck together without a clue of how they should actually culminate in a living, breathing universe.
For me, the question is simple: will ED become just some other casual game amongst hundreds of other casual games in my vast library that I don't really care one way or the other about, or will there be a place for CMDR Jarred Dumas to continue growing and influencing the world around him?
Based on Sandro's comments earlier, I fear the former will be the case.
