SleepyDelegate's Chronicles - taking the DBX around the Galaxy

Im trying to locate Silicate Vapour Geysers... They should be on the planet, according to the DSS, but all I see are gas vents and fumaroles... and magma spouts...

I love DBX, period. First ship I fell in love with in ED. It is refreshing every time to see a DBX taking on the galaxy. Thank you for continuing to share your journey @CMDR SleepyDelegate .

Have you been out since May? How is the ship doing? I have not read all your log yet and I recall reading something about about your loss of exploration data.
Although I went to Ishum's Reach in a Crusader but that was a race against time to get first ever Crusader to Ishum/Beagle Point :D. I have not been out for a long extended period of time.

A question about one of our log. How did the DBX get lodged in the side of the mountain without getting blown away?

Please keep posting your journey!

Thank you, CMDR @Christian-A-Hill I love my DBX... You know there are better alternatives, like Anaconda, where you can equip everything twice and still have over 65ly jump range... But where is the fun in that... ;) Also, I can't imagine lodging an Anaconda in the side of the hill like Did with my DBX...

As you will maybe read in my chronicles, I am constantly out looking for some interesting stuff... At this moment, I am in a bit less entertaining region, where there are not many sightseeing opportunities, but I still enjoy it a lot... Actually more that fighting...

I'm still hoping, that one day, I will stumble upon something really unique... And to do that, you just need to visit thousands and thousands of boring systems... I no longer do it for money... I have more than I plan on spending... So it happens regularly, that I honk a system, scan it, find several terraformables and continue without DSSins them, leaving tens of millions for someone else...

Yesterday I looked in your thread and liked your post... I thought it would be cool to meet you, as you will be probably going in my direction... :)

And to your question: I was also kinda worried, that I would hurt my ship, but it was just out of my control... I climbed on that hill and tried recalling my ship, trying to find out what will the AI do in such a difficult terrain... And this is what the AI did... it basically tried to land on the side of that hilll.. Although I gotta admit, that this is optical illusion, the ship is actually not touching the hill at all... :ROFLMAO:

Yesterday I gave up looking for silicate vapour geysers... After inspecting several ites, there re no geysers of this kind anywhere...

But I have found another crystal shards... This time pure Tellurium...

Im so far from the core, the Galaxy already looks like a sword of flames slashing the night sky in half...

I agree with you about ships such as Anaconda and like. I too have no desire for large ships or ships that are suitable for specific tasks, DBX being the only exception of course. :). That's why I am in the Crusader taking on the galaxy. The primary reason I love the ship, and not doing it for the money. I only have a couple hundred million CR and thats more than enough to sustain my ED galaxy lifestyle. I tinker with my DBX and Crusader only.

My main gameplay is immersion and roleplaying FireFly. This is probably the closest I will ever going to get in this lifetime. :D

Seeing the ship lodged in the mountain sure breaks the immersion. :ROFLMAO: I always worry about what AI autoland will do when I recall my ship. DBX never had any issue but I probably will not do it in this shieldless Crusader. I am not sure if AI will calculate the shieldless situation and not try to land at regular speed. Perhaps something to try after I get back.

The things that break the immersion for me are the ship controls... You would think, that with such advanced tech like Friendshipdrive, the manufacturer would be able to fit the ship with more capable navigation, where you can add waypoints to a route, or filter systems by very specific criteria and plot a course (and yes, Im aware of the limited features of current navicomp)... Also, why does the ship come with such a limited autopilot, that can only land or departure, but cant maintain flight level above planet surface etc...

Im not familiar with Firefly... Will give it a try... (y)

I am in deep trouble...

In one system, I have found this large and landable body... 25.000km in diameter I believe, 2.33g... So I thought it would be nice to attempt a landing...

I was very careful, as my weak thrusters have limit somewhere between 2,5 and 3g to land and safely depart... At least my feeling based on recent experience is, that they would not handle more than 3g...

After 15 minutes of searching for a nice vantage spot on top of the local Mt. Everest, I have finally landed...

Screenshot_0633.jpg

I decided to climb the top of the hill with my SRV, but the combination of high G and extremely slippery surface made the climb almost impossible, without constantly risking falling down from the mountain... This surface is probably pure ice, it is as slippery as it can get...

Screenshot_0636.jpg

This is as far as I was able to climb... Mind you, it was a scary experience ,because to get over those hills, you need to gain speed and basically roll over them fast, otherwise you end up sliding back down... And I had to constantly check, that there is enough lading ground behind the top of hose hills...

So I end up here... Take some pictures and decide to get back to my ship... What followed was a wild slide backwards down the hill with zero ability to control the slide...

I am now attempting to get back up, but it is virtually impossible, to get out of this pit...

Great pics there and to make the virtually impossible, possible.... open without Horizons.

Although it that still possible now Horizons is part of the base game?

Yeah, I kept trying for another 30 minutes... What I have discovered is, that the SRV is much more capable in climbing slippery slope backwards... When I attempted to climb the slope in forward direction, I could only manage to climb couple of meters and then I would slide back down, wheels spinning wildly... I tried everything... Slow approach, fast approach, pendulum approach, nothing worked, I would always slide down after couple of meters...

Then I discovered, that when I try to reverse up the hill, I am able to climb three times the distance without sliding down...

But I eventually got stuck in one of the pits anyway, without being able to continue...

So yes, I had to cheat... I reloaded without Horizons and was brought back to orbit...

But this just reminds me how dangerous the space can be... If this was a real life, I would not have had a chance to get back to my ship... All I could try would be to continue sliding down and if I was lucky enough, maybe I would have not not killed myself doing so and maybe I would have found a place, where I could have recalled my ship... But the mountain was very high and the slopes were really very, very steep, I would have probably killed myself attempting to slide down... And on this surface, there is no friction, when you start sliding, you cannot stop or control it...

On the other hand, in real life, I would have used snow spikes on my tires...

When you start feeling, like your last dumb idea was not dumb enough...

This was a point, where when I stopped, the SRV continued slowly sliding down and would only stop when the wheels hit some small wrinkle on the ground... Luckily, as discovered in my previous dumb experiment, the SRV is very capable when climbing the hill in reverse...

This is a life saving tips for SRV and one of the most useful one! I lost SRV in the past attempting to drive down a very exciting canyon wall. There were unusual rocks in the bottom of the canyon I wanted to check out. Almost half way down, my SRV started gaining speed and as a result lost control completely. I was in VR and for few heart stopping seconds I forgot it was not real life.
Perhaps if I tried to climb down backward i could have safely reach the bottom.

It is definitely a life saver! When you are climbing, I can really confirm, that the SRV's climb ability in reverse is much better... Not sure, whether it would also help when driving down the hill, but same logic should probably apply... :)

The only problem is, that the SRV has no side mirrors, therefore reversing up the hill is a bit of a challenge in terms of navigating the obstacles... Of course you can try and reverse using the turret view, or 3rd person view from the camera...

I would like to know what is the reason for this behaviour... It pretty much mimics the behaviour of the front engine front wheel drive car on the slippery slope... There the physics work a charm - your heavier end is putting more pressure on the driven wheels and it helps to gain more traction...

The reason I came to the planet I mentioned in my post above, was geological signals worth inspecting... But they were actually down in that canyon... As I today discovered, the canyon was over 5km deep (therefore my fall with my SRV would be definitely trip ending incident)and it was dark down there...

Im hovering with my ship close to the bottom, it is pitch dark there, looks almost like a cole mine...

Bit more p.o.r.n, before I leave this beauty...

It almost felt kind of sad, to leave... When you look down from that hill and see the ring slowly rotating around that giant planet, the piano music playing in your earphones and you know, that you are probably never coming back to see this exact same scene again... And then you realize, that you are probably never going to see it in real life... I felt kinda sad...
