My feeling now, and I have to admit I didn't think this was the case just a few short months ago, is that Mobius' groups' growing popularity coupled with FD's chronic inability or unwillingness to address the lack of consequences for sealclubbing in Open will soon lead to one of two outcomes:
- The Mobius groups will be considered an embarrassing reminder of FD's failure and they will hard cap them, either at their current limit or possibly lower, leading to a large number of PVE-oriented players switching to Solo.
or
- FD will introduce an Open PVE / limited PVP mode that operates broadly along Mobius' current lines.
Either of these will result in a wailing and a gnashing of teeth the likes of which the forums and Reddit have never seen, but unless FD steps up and at least tries to make some radical changes to the almost universally derided Crime & Punishment system, PVP players with agendas are just going to to continue escalating their activities, while more and more PVE players will switch to Mobius (while they can and while they know about it) or Solo.
David Braben's dream of a cohesive Open galaxy where player interactions were balanced and contextual is dying the death of a thousand "meh"s. The longer FD ignore the problem, the worse it's going to get.
And before anyone leaps in with "ganking is still rare in Open", I know. But it's getting less so, and some people's tolerance for non-contextual sealclubbing is already zero. Lest anyone forget, Open Play is an environment in which FD's best efforts to steer player behaviour using out-of-game "rules" resulted in a charity event in which the destruction of new players' ships in the main starter system was the sole goal. An event which FD had no choice but to "
approve" due to their own naivety. It was, more or less, a developer-endorsed sealclubbing event. What other game can boast that?
Words alone don't work, especially badly chosen loophole-laden words. What we need is the
ED equivalent of Concord in high security and starter systems. Not mediocre authority ships who turn up three minutes into a fight and fly around taking random potshots, but large wings of ridiculously overpowered enforcement vessels that jump in, open up, do their job and move on.
Implementing anything else in lieu of a working C&P system is a waste of resources at this point. The damage to the community and to the game's reputation is already being done, and it's getting worse week by week.
