So open is no more viable...

I've been playing in open almost exclusively since about march.
(With the exception of mode switching and forgetting which mode I'm in, and when using my 3/4g connection, cos it's pants).
And I've been to quite a few CGs.

Deaths by other CMDRs so far:
Zero.
CMDRs killed by me:
Zero.

I'm not very good at PvP apparently.
I can't even die properly.
I've been playing in open since 1.2 and I have the same number of involuntary CMDR-caused deaths. Sure I've died in friendly consensual duels, but that's different.

Evading interdictions is not hard, escaping once interdicted is not hard, fleeing to safety is not hard. Especially not compared to other things in the game like docking or scooping.

OMG - it's not like it's difficult to avoid combat in Open if you don't want it.

1) Submit
2) High Wake

Problem solved. If you can't figure that out then maybe Open isn't for you.

Look.

I am quite aware how avoid this and infact I never died in open (still).

But if you are interdicted, you are fired with god weapon, you escape, you are interdicted again, and so on things are different.

So I have no problem with open.

Anyway.

You have forgotten 2 step for the safe escape mode.

2)boost
3)heat sink and then high wake

You escape, then you run. If you just low wake and sit there waiting to be interdicted again that's your fault.

Hehe, I wouldn't say escaping is easier than docking.
I pretty much slam any and all ships in to the pad, any old how. It's so easy it's not even worth having as a feature. Lol

Open would be fine if there was any sort of crime and punishment system that actually made being a serial killer at all problematic.

Cause you'd figure a vast star spanning civilization would have a competent judicial system or something. You know ... some sort of actual deterent to murder like we do in our primitive world 1200 years in the past.

Being in open in the recent CG.

I have been interdicted by guys who only use overload ammunition: cutter, wings od imperial courier.

Everyone of them is using overload missiles.

It s just me, or in being like this open is just a waste of time?

Open never was viable.
Even less for CGs lol.

And heck if you play open without owning horizons and having engineer upgrades your masochistic :p

Shame that it had hard number limits. Möbius was so popular it had to get split into 2.
My feeling now, and I have to admit I didn't think this was the case just a few short months ago, is that Mobius' groups' growing popularity coupled with FD's chronic inability or unwillingness to address the lack of consequences for sealclubbing in Open will soon lead to one of two outcomes:

  • The Mobius groups will be considered an embarrassing reminder of FD's failure and they will hard cap them, either at their current limit or possibly lower, leading to a large number of PVE-oriented players switching to Solo.

    or

  • FD will introduce an Open PVE / limited PVP mode that operates broadly along Mobius' current lines.
Either of these will result in a wailing and a gnashing of teeth the likes of which the forums and Reddit have never seen, but unless FD steps up and at least tries to make some radical changes to the almost universally derided Crime & Punishment system, PVP players with agendas are just going to to continue escalating their activities, while more and more PVE players will switch to Mobius (while they can and while they know about it) or Solo.

David Braben's dream of a cohesive Open galaxy where player interactions were balanced and contextual is dying the death of a thousand "meh"s. The longer FD ignore the problem, the worse it's going to get.

And before anyone leaps in with "ganking is still rare in Open", I know. But it's getting less so, and some people's tolerance for non-contextual sealclubbing is already zero. Lest anyone forget, Open Play is an environment in which FD's best efforts to steer player behaviour using out-of-game "rules" resulted in a charity event in which the destruction of new players' ships in the main starter system was the sole goal. An event which FD had no choice but to "approve" due to their own naivety. It was, more or less, a developer-endorsed sealclubbing event. What other game can boast that?

Words alone don't work, especially badly chosen loophole-laden words. What we need is the ED equivalent of Concord in high security and starter systems. Not mediocre authority ships who turn up three minutes into a fight and fly around taking random potshots, but large wings of ridiculously overpowered enforcement vessels that jump in, open up, do their job and move on.

Implementing anything else in lieu of a working C&P system is a waste of resources at this point. The damage to the community and to the game's reputation is already being done, and it's getting worse week by week.

Through roughly 3 years (That I am aware of) of bitter contention over the Modes, FD have doggedly stuck to their 3 mode system, and I predict that is the best, and most sensible course for them to take. Where can they take less crap from the players, than if they do nothing. Maybe that fire is under control for now.

Simply, find the environment you most enjoy, and play there. Open has no magic that a good PG can't make. Open can, and will, only support the population that enjoys it. There is nothing more to consider.

The problem is: Crime and punishment system won't work in current game's state...
thanks to P2P architecture it's almost impossible to track combatlogging to NPCs, so system must use players as main defence force.
And here goes another one: As long as we have solo it won't work. Players will kill people, wait for others to notice it and start hunting them, switch to solo and just wait it out or move somewhere else.
Basically Eve-like system is only one that could work, but it would require limiting solo mode or getting rid of it.

I could not agree more, it is becoming increasingly apparent that a new crime and punishment system needs to be an absolute priority.

After my try at a CG and getting interdicted 8 times in less than 10ls, I decided to do any future CG in Solo. I play everything else in Open and take my chances there.
