Spring 2024 DLC Speculation

Suffering builds character!

My list has definitely changed a bit, like the Peere David’s deer is on there now.

But if I could just knock even just 2 more birds off my wishlist, I would be happy. I imagine some people have never got a single animal they wanted, some me even getting around 4 is great!
I would never expect that, but I really got nearly all off my most wanted.

It started with Conservation (oryx and leopard), then Grasslands (maned wolf and hyena), Tropical (river hog), Arid (donkey, gazelle, addax, rhino) and Eurasia (sloth bear, takin, Saiga and tapir).

There is only Père David’s deer left. But I want it so bad, even in spite off how much I’ve already got.

Another fact, birds and monkeys were never very popular among the votes. Now everybody are taking about them but the new meta wishlists do not indicate their supposed popularity.
How does the new list not reflect the want for birds and monkeys?
Literally half of the top 20 are monkeys and birds

7 of 20 is not a half really.
I just thought that after people were rooting so much for the birds and monkeys their positions would be stronger.
Mamy people mention birds as their preferred species and while creating the final lists puts them at the very end after all the mammals that they want first.
Maybe I am wrong. Those are only my observations.

Ive counted 10/20 or 16/30 in the 2024 meta wishlist (which i assumedyou meant by the new one)

That is because there are hundreds of species to choose from and most people are satisfied with "any pelican", "any ibis", "any waterfowl", "any SA monkey". So when 100 people end up spreading their votes on 8 different species of pelicans, then one specific species of pelican have a hard time competing with a specific species of iconic popular mammal most of those 100 people also had on their list.

Popular specific species will always win over species-rich types of animals that are known in more generic forms.

This also reflects that there are "animal types" that are needed/wanted even more that any specific species in particular.

  1. Tropical should have been an animal pack, a tropical theme with no monkey or bird is so weird. The Indonesia jungle them is super cool though. The animals picked were fantastic, the issue is just I think the pack needed more. Also Frontier picked “the wrong” sloth, would have preferred two toed, but honestly not pressed about it.
  2. Arid, I don’t need to say much, but I’ll say it anyway. Every animal is modeled and animated beautifully, easily some of the best looking hoofstock in the game. Honestly I think the sandcat was great, and the cape porcupine is just perfect. Why the viper though? Beautiful animal, just the weirdest exhibit choice in the game. But yeah it’s the ungulate thing. Each animal 100% deserves to be in game. I know everyone hated on it at the time, the dama gazelle is so pretty. But yes, too many ungulates is overkill. I like them in game now, but we could have picked one to be a Baboon or Secretary Bird.
  3. The only thing with Oceania for me personally is the stream really made me think we were gonna get the lorikeet, then we got the bat. Don’t hate the bat, but the lorikeet seemed so real at the time….
  4. Eurasia was also very ungulate heavy, but we didn’t double up on one group. Also for Europeans the wisent and the boar was way too important not to include. If I had to have one complaint I would have swapped the sloth bear and the siaga antelope. Obviously I’m happy in game now that they are here, but I won’t lie and say I think they should have been something else. Also swan carries hard here.
So maybe me it isn’t that Frontier picks too wrong all that often, it’s just they give us what they want but not exactly how we would want it. Granted that can have repercussions for the game.
I agree with most of this. A tropical animal pack would have been really great and could have alleviated some of the current "we need more South American animals" discourse. But then again... I'm super glad we got that Indonesian theme. I was stoked for all of the habitat animals but this was the first pack where I was even more excited for the scenery! Hah.

Arid I still kinda feel like the reason we got so many ungulates was because of the detailing that went into the key picks...

What I find interesting about the Eurasia pack is that it's ungulate heavy but it didn't bug me! I think because they all felt fairly "unique." Which is a stark contrast to Arid where it just bummed me out. LOL

My theory: things would have been different, but not necessarily better. I’m sure we would have got the same number of birds and monkeys, but we wouldn’t have got all the other amazing animals we got. The meta wishlist was a fantastic tool for everyone to gage community interest and for frontier to make decisions about what animals to add.
There's a few animals we would have undoubtedly gotten regardless. But there's other species that found their way into the game because of that wishlist. I'm convinced of that. I feel corny saying it but it really does feel cool to have been a part of it all inn a very, very small way.

But TBH one of the really cool things about the game in general is how much the fans got to "shape" it. People can say Frontier makes mistakes or doesn't listen all they want but the reality is... Most of that first BroNation feature wishlist wound up in the game. They updated their DLC strategy based on fan feedback (animal packs). They've implemented other features nobody asked for. They've twisted their own vision to incorporate animals into the game that people wanted (e.g., sloths). And so on.

Internal_01 on SteamDB has updated — is that a DLC sign?
Either that or the outsource_lqa, more often we lean onto the lqa file. But more and more files are getting updated which is good news at least for the spring dlc.
If I recall, that's a version for testing. Take that with a grain of salt but... That's just what I'm remembering and I can't find any evidence to back that up but yeah it's probably a good sign!

Also kind of a LOL at what I said earlier about SteamDB getting updated the second we decided it wasn't trustworthy this time around. LOL

The never ending battle. Everyone can agree a duck is needed, but when it comes to choosing:
  1. Mallard
  2. Mandarin
  3. White faced whistling
  4. Wood
  5. Muscovy
  6. King eider
Suddenly makes it a lot harder. Of course everyone has a favorite, and the mandarin duck is the highest on every wishlist. Still, when people want a duck everyone points to a different species. There might be an overall consensus, but everything is different. Shoot, I bet if someone went through all 600+ animals on the meta wishlist, someone probably casted one vote for a duck like the Brazilian teal.

When it comes to a much popular animal such as an African rhino, suddenly the votes are only split among two options. Makes it much easier to vote for something then. But when we say we need a pelican, suddenly it’s a whole series of choices.

As I said earlier, everyone can vote on a capybara there is really only one species we all agree on. But any of the “group” animals, and the never ending choices begin.

Heres a question, if you had to keep the themes from 2023 packs, how would you lay them out? You can reverse them if you want as long as you have 2 scenery 2 animal.
I'll go first, I tried to keep it realistic as possible:

Tropical Animal Pack
Lar Gibbon
Red River Hog
Fossa
Asian Water Monitor
Sloth Bear
Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo
Greater Rhea
Three Toed Sloth (E)

Arid Pack
African Crested Porcupine
Hamadryas Baboon
Dromedary Camel
Sand Cat
Desert Horned Viper (E)
Africa / Wild West theme scenery & foliage

Islands Animal Pack
Tasmanian Devil
Quokka
North Island Brown Kiwi
Little Penguin
Aye Aye
Banteng
Lowland Anoa
Panther Chameleon (E)

Eurasia Pack
Wisent
Mute Swan
Takin
Sloth Bear
Hermanns Tortoise (E)
Indonesian scenery we would've gotten in the tropical pack.

I've been a bit out of the loop since December other then seeing that console released. So what's our expectations at the moment. I think it makes sense to expect the spring dlc a few weeks later then usual due to console.

I've moved my expectations to late April - mid may, basically it's anytime from mid April (highly unlikely) to late may (more likely if final dlc).
