Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

If you believe that, you really don't know human nature. The reason Frontier had to iterate crime & punishment several times is that they (naively) thought people would play cricket in a multiplayer environment, when really all they wanted to do is kick sand in other people's faces.
Again, there is almost no pvp (normal or griefer) during pve missions because the way pve missions works make it not interesting and easy for pvp players (normal or griefer). I practice MMO since t4c, I perfectly know how some guys do it. You find few bad pvp around stations/spaceports/specific places, not in pve missions.

You are still talking about an Alpha with a relatively large play area and a max of a few score players, yes you can say that about it now, but if they ever release it with thousands of players as they intend that changes things entirely, you will be lucky to step out of an elevator without being griefed.......by other players I mean, not the elevator itself!

I seem to recall, in the deepest depths of time, certain Orgs announcing "ownership" of various make-believe pipelined systems, posting pretty jpegs of their fleets, and proclaiming that any player even visiting said system would be instantly destroyed because "ownership" blah blah blah.

I doubt they have yet had opportunity to be devoured by the Sandwurmie, perhaps the elevators got them?

I know what I'll be playing tomorrow...and it's not star citizen ;)

Launches at 18:00 GMT tomorrow for the digi-deluxe version, 10th Feb for everyone else. There was only a tenner difference in price...so I went for it 🧙‍♂️

But where would the thousands come from? Gates of Hell? I doubt they'd establish video gaming at Gehenna - even if it is a punishment to play this buggy, sorry parody of a game.

Succesfull games tend to put brakes on PVP, either by having dedicated PVP servers, or by various other mechanisms, like in Elite mode system+block mechanism in place. Full PVP games in general tend to have problem in popularity...but perhaps SC will succeed? More likely not.

In space with dynamic spawn of pve missions you don't know where they are and can't camp them.
You can camp on ground but if thousand of players, the number of caves/derelicts will also be greatly expanded. And as soon as you kill a guy, you will be tagged for bounty hunters and will not be able to camp anymore.
Griefing pvp is a problem when :
  • the ratio griefers/standard players is high (not the case in SC)
  • when griefers can spend a lot of time on easy griefing (not the case in SC with BH)
  • when you can camp/track players easily (not the case in SC).

Bounty hunting, it MIGHT work, but bounty should be high enough to factor risks. And ship capable of bounty hunting is as also capable for griefing. After all targeting PVP griefer might be riskier than targeting PVE players. So perhaps bounty beacon will also work as griefer beacon...

Not so many players per server and still a very niche game.

See what happens should CIG ever achieve their goal of hundreds or even thousands of people per server and release (lol) a decently playable product.

Then watch the griefers arrive in force.
Exactly, you have encountered it already in an instanced game that cannot go above, idk, 30-40 players seeing one another? With an incomprehensibly larger play area than SC? Now think about what it means for a game that, in theory, should be played on a single shard and so far has had only a single micro-star system implemented :)

Ninja edit: ED has solo mode, though, which I really like.

Ninja edit 2: actually, player ganking in EVE Online should be a good indication.

Little point of order: Star citizen runs 100 player servers that are usually full to capacity (which is why I said I was amazed it was running so well off my phones internet).

The point I'm making is that in a game which is in one system with 4 planets, a scattering of moons and a few stations that your simply not seeing this as prevalently as people with ganker/griefer fear assert, and the systems they have in place discourage it quite considerably while encouraging 'whitehat' pvp play.

Again, that said Grim Hex can be a warzone, but then in terms of lore it makes sense and its usually pvpers dunking on other pvpers seen as its the only 'spawn area' they can use safely without getting smashed back to the stone age.

So do the PvE missions spawn in random locations? Otherwise a griefer just needs camp a place and wait for prey. There is no need to track players when you can go to the chokepoints.
Its a bit of a mixi-blob.

Space ones are randomly generated locations which the mission taker is the only one with a QT marker for.

Ground ones are at one of several installations per planet. And while a griefer could 'lurk in wait' at one, theyre going to end up with all the aimbot ai spawning around them whenever someone generates the mission there.

For myself it'll be the F-18 in DCS. A mate of mine convinced me to buy it, and after the monster that is the Harrier, I feel its embarrassingly easy to fly!

Back to the relative safety of SC, what was 2022 money juicing figures like? Unless it drops I can't ever see output changing from flashy content to working lifts.
