Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I'm the guys that open the door of the chamber from time to time to see if the reverb keep going ;-)

Yeah. "Opinions" like when CIG give numbers that show that the daily average playtime for a buggy alpha went from 48 minutes in 2017 to 3 hours in 2022. But no one wants to hear such facts here. Better stick to the bugs collections of Golgot, they are valid proof that the alpha is unplayable for everyone ;-)
After 5 years of development, a game is better. That’s not that startling really considering the vast resources poured into Star Citizen. However, the game remains in self-identified alpha.

I’ve heard there’s going to be a Samuel Beckett season at the National Theatre, starting with an update to a classic, ‘Waiting for Squadron 42’ ;)

...is fun to play despite the bugs...
I can say the same thing about a plot of dirt. It's very subjective, but me and most of my cousins loved playing with mud when we were kids. It didn't cost us a dime.

I remember supporters regularly saying stuff like 'you can't trust what CIG says unless it came from Chris Roberts' and things like 'you can't take every thing Chris Roberts says literally'.
Wasn't it CIG who said someting like 100 players in the same server? Or was it 50? 100 star systems?
They also said more funding means the game gets finished faster and despite the growing list of features it wouldn't be delayed at all. The point is CIG said a lot fo things, most of it not true.

:edit: Doesn't mean the 3 hour average play time isn't true, its just...I don't know relies on interpretation/context? Like others have suggested, it could be hours stuck in the menu trying to get it to work or waiting for the train. It could be actiual gameplay or sitting around in the ship waiting for it to get to its destination.
Kind of like saying the average office worker spend more time in the office compared to the quarantine period. It doesn't mean they're doing more work, they could be talking about Game of Thrones by the coffee machine, or simply the company stopped letting workers work from home.

Unrelated to above.
Is Star Citizen a game now or is it still an Alpha Test?
As far as I know the common usage of Alpha isn't a game, but a test. Chris Roberts said in one interview the game is in version 3 so it implies its no longer in a test state so not an Alpha?

For example, I might've played about 2-3 hours a day during the last free fly. I had to go full "Buckyball Mode" to do this, but it's a fairly solid fact. But what isn't revealed is that I only played for one week, out of a full year.

As the old saying goes: "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics." Given that CIG is has repeatedly been caught lying to Backers, and some pretty damning ones too, why would their use of statistics be any different?

This is my favourite bit of Chris maths from recent years:

To support PES we needed to create 12 new services. For Server Meshing, only 4 more services are currently planned, so you can see just how much foundational tech for SM is in PES.

His absurd excuses are doubtless a form of self-defence primarily. But they're wonderful meme lures for the more gullible kind of fan too ;)

Oh Ant's gonna love this. The servers are currently set to 100+. (Although in the latest patch they seem to take a horrible turn whenever they go beyond 50...)

Stress test experiences:

The FPS goes down as soon as there are more than 50 players. I've been making this observation since the EVOs were running reasonably well, and I'm still observing it today. Up to 50 players, the servers run at 17-30 FPS, above that it quickly becomes uncomfortable - down to 4 FPS at a full shard of 100-120. Nevertheless, I think that we should not down from 120 players per shard, but that CIG continues to optimize exactly there.

As Raikilq already wrote, testing is hardly possible at 1-4 FPS. I've seen from many influencers and streamers that they all tried their hardest to stress the server. Let's hope that we collected good data for CIG.

During the first stress test on Saturday 2am UTC, I was able to see 2 random server lags. These were observable server-wide, i.e. including the other players on the shard. Everything froze for about 5 seconds and then continued to run normally. All input, whether mouse, joystick or keyboard, continued during this pause. Today, Saturday, during the 3rd stress test at 8pm UTC, these problems occurred again and much more frequently. Even when the server's FPS was still above 13, the server was down for all players for several seconds every minute. In between the lags, the game continued to run "normally", at 4 FPS.

What I evaluate negatively since a few patches: the server FPS are even without a stress test, at full load already down to 4-6 FPS, which you notice at every corner already so.

It was a successful stress test, the servers were all done with us.

They are aiming for 1000s though of course ;)

It is Alpha as a Service...

Forever and ever. Amen.

Or as Chris would have it, it is: "An online live game..."

They're definitely treating it as a Game As A Service. They said as much in their 'Road to Release' Citcon in 2018:

This is an online live game...
As long as you guys want to live in this universe, every three months we're giving you a build. And here you are, and here's a bit more, and here's a bit more, here's a bit more.
We're running a live game, and that's sort of the epiphany that we've had internally.
