So three fun things about the latest ISC:

Source: https://youtu.be/CflyIwqDEsE?si=Jom-1qBsIL9eAkIR

1: All the stuff that the Hangar Module tech was supposed provide is now coming via exciting new tech... 'very, very long term'.

2: Remember this guy? The kickstarter backer and experienced Lead Designer who fronted up this bizarre jangle of cargo refactor insanity:

He's not in the vid. Because he bailed after 7 months...

Never meet your heroes I guess ;)

&

3: They want players to pack large items (& even small vehicles) into 'physicalised inventory' boxes. No doubt because the physics gods are moaning at all the cargo refactor / salvage / PES load etc. (So, plus side: Even more 'fit X in Y' mini-games are now possible. And that's actually vaguely pragmatic. Downside: You can no longer access your inventory anywhere in the station. Sounds like you have to be standing physically next to it...)

  • NAPU is North America PU - Montreal, Austin, LA combined after Turbulent merger.
  • Worried looking LA guys saying trying to work on amazing new features
  • Features: Physicalised Cargo, in game shops, 'Newer features that we're looking into, such as exploration', Hull C, 'larger feature sets',
  • 6 programmers, their own QA etc. They list the first names of everyone. [NB how Dan Griffis isn't there ;)]
  • Mainly in the 'technical design phase'...
  • Freight elevators will be interacted with via player hangars. Using cargo grids, detaching/attaching using tractor beams.
  • 5m40s - Instanced hangars. Looking at ways they users can have personal space / do it simultaneously. [NB backtracks on old ideas of all locations being 'real'?]
  • When you're ready to leave the hangar will 'move into place' [technically?], and you'll be able to fly out.
  • 7m40s - 'Persistent hangars are kind of an evolution of instant hangars. And really what it is is our first step towards real player ownership in the game beyond ships.' [What happened to the Hangar Module...?]
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CflyIwqDEsE&t=460s

- 'Very very long term, I have no clue of any dates or anything, but you'll be able to customize it and upgrade it so it becomes bigger, you can have bigger ships in them. And maybe at some point even having them like at a distant location, you could buy a second one.'
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CflyIwqDEsE&t=8m10s

  • You can invite friends to your hangars, split up your haul...
  • 'Persistence of hangers is really important.' 'This is going to be developed more in the future and we're going to use the same technology that we're using to build this for other things in the game such as player habs'
  • Physicalised Inventory: Ability to access station inventory menu from any location in station is going to go away... [So need to be next to the physical inventory box?]
  • Allows you to 'transfer in a clean and effective way'...
  • Allows you to transport dangerous materials, or ungainly items like ship weapons, even a small vehicle, in these big boxes... [Clearly loose items are slamming the physics / servers ;)]
  • 13m30s - Going to allow any shape object to attach to cargo grid.
Also hangars (and habs eventually…) will now be instanced. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the original idea was also to integrate them seamlessly with the PU somehow?

I must have missed it, when did it say that in the video?

fragile box blows up the ship, isn't this feature already in game?

What I keptthinking is they might be putting things in these container to simplify the cargo handling system. Instead of implementing collision and manipulation for every item in game including driving vehicles into cargo bays, they're putting everything in containers so the player only has to interact with set number of simple shape items. My only gripe is the tractor beam thing, CIG is missing an opportunity to have the player load and unload these containers using forklifts/gravsleds. It will still have more gameplay than Starfield and any other games out there.

It does look like what Mole said, Star Citizen is more on an arena to enjoy interracting with the digital spaceships you've collected rather than a space game.

Yes, if "problem solving" is abandoning the lies told for years to extract $600 million from backers.

"That will go up, but the final plan is obviously once we get the server meshing in — that won’t be this year, but that will be coming in next year — that will allow everyone to play in one huge instance with all the players. The servers will patch people from place to place. You can have 200 people in a room, and when they leave that room, another server takes over. When they take off into space, another server takes over. But the goal is to have everyone in the same instance." - Erin Roberts, 2018

Well, the original pitch I don't think they talked about habs and private hangars, although a bit later, when they added the hangar module, i think they were already talking about seamless hangars. By the time the scope started to spiral, they were definitely talking about zero instances for everything, everything combined together as one massive whole... or maybe i misheard and someone said Chris was a massive hole.

For sure. The default standpoint has always been the goal for full seamlessness in general though. You also even have devs on the record describing how personal hangars would be tied to specific locations or bases in the PU further reinforcing that integration etc. Having said that, if someone can find an old enough quote stating explicitly that personal hangars would be instanced and separate from the rest of the seamless PU I am all ears.
