Haven't had the delight of the SM demo yet. (Brought CR to tears apparently).

Sub is still fun tho ;)

You mean the Paul Reindell one? I am just watching that as we speak. The guy is just supposedly showing a demo of 3 zones, colored in purple, red and green.

CIG: "You see those nice colors and things flashing? Yeah, all that means server meshing works. We did it!"

lol

Apparently the "inflexion point" SQ42 had achieved as described by CR in response to Terada recently means that it is already feature complete and that all that is left is polishing (y):

This would corroborate the fact Zyloh had already played all missions back in 2016 because he came from QA and it was his job to do so.

Mark it down aswell as "done" for SQ42.

You can't shoot at someone in a different instance in ED. Heck, you can't even see them.

Which is precisely why they are instanced. It's a known good solution to a common blocker and works well with both the choice nature of ED and it's network transmission model.

SC, on the other hand, can not afford to do that.

Also - I think I noted Genuine Robert's waving hands and mentioning "hundreds" of concurrent players interacting. What happened to the thousands or indeed "all players" you promised?

I was not critiscing instancing in ED. But claiming that the server meshing that SC are working on has been available in ED is nonsense.

ED's server and matchmaking implementation is completely and fundamentally different from SC's approach, and always has been.

I hope Mods will forgive a little aside, but in the early days of ED networking, when it didn't work at all due to some FD oversights, we had to turn off firewalls, assign statics, nuke routers, mince FQDN's, manual hosts, you name it and we tried it in order to get it to work. And eventually, work it did.

SC's server meshing is a misguided attempt to improve the "appearance" of performance, whilst actually decreasing performance by introducing not only added bandwidth, but latency, and most importantly concurrence whilst forgetting that most people have crap routers, poor connections, and ISP's who are utter barstewards.

By “the server meshing that SC are working on” you mean the red, purple and blue colors flashing in and out and the plushies in the Citcon thingie that made Chris Roberts cry?

I much rather watch baby crib mobiles, but hey.

🤷‍♂️

EDIT: Oh I'm wrong 😁

I believe Hans was being somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

Allow me to be tongue-in-cheek then...

What ED has is a mainly-functional gaggle of techniques for achieving multiplayer gameplay at the desired scale. (P2P in this case, with a bunch of global services stitching it all together).

What SC has is: Another year of dreams.txt ;)
