Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I'm not trying to be snarky -- that effect is simple, has been used in other games, and is nothing new. I just don't understand why something that's been done before, across dozen of other games, suddenly gets picked up and praised as "the kind of attention to detail only true pioneers" would have. I'm constantly at a loss when people praise various SC "never been done" tech, because the tech they are talking about or referencing is often years or sometimes decades old.
I don't want to just give spoilers, but can you go back to my original post and see if you may have missed something? :)

Pardon me, I need to give my Poe's Law detector a thorough cleaning. It seems to be broken. :)

Apropos of nothing, but I was thinking about the 'pixel detail' hype of a while ago. Screens in Star Citizen are not just normal textures like other games, they are made of actual simulated pixels! Its the kind of stuff no other studio would bother with, its the kind of attention to detail only true pioneers have. It doesn't bring any true 'gameplay value' but its just next-level immersion. Yes I know, the usual haters here are going to whine how its not a real game and how this stuff has no bearing on the day-to-day experience, but it really is noteworthy and cool. For those who didn't see it yet:

Never been done before!

Oh... wait.

LOL. Guess FD are true pioneers then, since they did it years before CIG.

...it's even quite some way behind 3 year old console games ported to PC :)

When the Gen8 games like these first fully utilized low-tier console hardware, that was the point when I knew that the whole "fidelity" narrative is out of the window.

CryEngine 3 is a Gen7 engine after all. There were some effects you could do with deferred rendering on that hardware, which have been done too much for the sake of it and then dialed down later. Titles like Mass Effect (2007) were a prime example for a Gen7 sci-fi game look. And then there is this alpha, which in 2021 still does overexposure when you look into a light or "film grain". Yes, it was cool - in 2007 when Mass Effect did it. Now it's just retro!

Ultimately textures larger than needed or polygons where nobody will see them, are nothing more than a waste of resources and get old fast. Art direction, on the other hand, can carry a game for decades. Obvious examples on PotatoStation 3:

This time I kept it intentionally vague. Best response to me was Intrepid praising the EDO screenshot. I honestly suspect that if you record a base infiltration vid of EDO and show it as an upcoming feature update for SC quite a few fans would spend days explaining why it is the most in-depth and innovative FPS experience in the history ever. :p

Yes the one @Ian Skippy posted was from EDO, notice the empty rectangular HUD box at the top of the screen? and the suit on the screen? :)

I don't think i have seen anyone say its never been done before, just that its an interest and cool attention to detail, from both Fronter and CIG.

One of the main problems with conversation and discourse surrounding Star Citizen (and not just Star Citizen, don't get me started on today's American political landscapes) is that a joke, troll, ironic or real post all begin to sound the same. My irony meter broke sometime around late 2016 and has continued to spiral downward. "Taking horse de-wormer," I'll say, "that has to be someone joking. That has to be a troll." And lo, it is real. And I am owned.

And maybe that's the point of blurring and crossing all these "ironic" lines (not singling you out here, Ian, just in more of a general sense): that eventually it becomes so exhausting to filter out what's a real argument versus a fun joke versus a deliberate troll, that no matter what, the responder is owned.

I have / do play EDO. ;)
