After spending the past month playing--the inventory system is a huge red flag for me.
My background: developed/fielded software/hardware systems for military/industry.
It is, by far, the worst inventory system I have experienced in any game. I understand this is alpha...but cold hard backer cash was spent on this.
A few points:
- To throw something like this over the fence to the customer-base flags some serious problems under the hood
- I am not saying the managers don't care--that is rarely the problem. It usually comes down to teamwork and the ability/inability to deal with problematic ideas/people.
- It almost always starts with a breakdown of trust, which leads to fear/inhibition which leads to ignoring problems. It ends with a crappy product nobody is proud of.
- Observing this inventory system has caused me to notice other issues that, alone, would not be a big deal--but with the inventory system are concerning.
-- Bragging about trivial accomplishments. Companies do this when they are insecure about their ability to finish work.
-- Early 'victory' parties/rewards. New flashy buildings, office spaces, etc. It's the Rocky III story.
-- Generic excuses on critical tech expected years ago. Giant red flag.
-- Shifting blame to the customer. "It's not our fault, we were just doing what the customer wanted".
I have pledged a lot of money on this game--more than I care to admit. I want it to succeed. But that inventory system...insulting at best.
Is there more to the story?
