Gotcha! I have found a good compromise when looking for this stuff in an SRV, and that's to use the thrusters to jump and then look down to skim the surface using SRV lights to illuminate the ground, land and repeat. Works best on lo-grav bodies of course, but I was able to find this in a pretty dark spot.
This was a good planet for biologicals, I found five different ones all intermingled together and in high concentrations. I can't remember the system, but it's one jump away from Deciat.
