Victories in Col 285 Sector CA-E b13-1 and Kalkaduna; that makes thirty-six!

The Col 285 Sector CA-E b13-1 eviction at M. Cocijo already had 22% progress, and it became our update 15 test of a landfall harvest to complete the remainder. The findings were:
  • Landfall still works nicely!
  • As with the earlier open harvest, Scouts appeared in pairs with several minutes in between appearances. Some would attack and others were content to observe, though either way just shooting them as casually as before when they fly into view is now enough to keep the skies clear. They accumulate if not destroyed; in this case we had one moment with six present, matching the previous limit, though we did not wait to discover whether we would reach eight.
  • Unlike previous landfall harvests, the Thargoid retreat/approach behaviour always chose a downward direction rather than upward. If true everywhere, this changes my previous advice to hover upside-down if gravity allows; with most limpets returning from below, it is best to remain upright.
Other general notes which are not specific to landfall harvests:
  • The single class 1 Research limpet seems to complete much faster than those from the Universal multi-limpet, enough that the time between rounds of eight from the latter can accommodate two rounds of the former.
  • Once again we caught a Cyclops immediately; this is forming a very favourable pattern.

If you run Research sample harvests at the moment and have not yet moved into Control systems, please note that the latter is an example of using the weekly Alert report to protect a populated system in advance. In this case, it prevents HIP 18702 from becoming an Alert next week, which is what needs to happen to avoid becoming overwhelmed with Invasions!

Speaking of Invasions, they have very much returned for probably at least a few cycles, and well done to all those who are not letting Hez Ur fall to having zero ports. Alerts are doing similarly well with one empty system secured and heavy progress at Juipedun, and I see what appears to be the usual eviction checks at 65 Kappa Tauri and HIP 4617!

Occasionally INIV has a courtesy note to DCOH, though this one is more feedback-y—we had to stop using DCOH as a second source last cycle due to what appeared to be 1% progress estimates. The Imperial Navy mathematics department considers that fine enough to perform and even a good idea, however it really needs to be reported separately such that one has the estimate number and also the actual last-reported, genuinely-captured progress number. We changed things to reject odd-numbered progress after it started appearing by means of DCOH subtracting 33% from surplus systems at the start of a cycle, but the problem now is that an even-numbered progress could also be an estimate rather than a real report!

As it happens, we have a minor courtesy note also—the last few inhabited Control evictions (Yukait, Fotlandjera, Auaker, Theemim) would report that the next state is Clear as if they were empty systems, rather than Recovery.

One of the additions to the Journal data in U15 is the system progress value, and that seems to be sent to 6 decimal places - they're likely not estimates, just from a different source to the lower-resolution in-game display.

Got it; that is one for V to implement directly, and also some good news if we can use it for more accurate difficulty measurements! If I list it here then definitely it will be as I said, alongside the amount which is actually verifiable by checking the Galaxy map.

I am quite sure that Maelstrom exploration and the changes to Scouts have given Invasions a slightly softer start than I would have expected given so many planetary attacks, though some adaptation appears to be occurring, and weekends often can surprise. The new missions for Control systems also seem to be driving a bit more eviction movement in places such as HIP 30158 and Balak!

For the moment, the lower capacity means that system focus will need to start narrowing now rather than later in the cycle—at present it looks like Invasions will have to choose HIP 29596 or Kagutsuchi, and Alerts have to choose one of HIP 21991, Nu Guang or Lovaroju. Notably we have also a lot of horizontal eviction progress with a combined 50% across more than ten systems (65 Kappa Tauri leading narrowly), presumably due to the new on-foot missions!

I understand that Glaives are making rare appearances during port defence, and having taken a closer look at those misbehaving Scouts while harvesting in Bagalya I can see that they have a new main weapon in addition to their previous main weapon. Setting aside the new missions and Maelstrom exploration, to what extent are those changes (or indeed any other update 15 changes) affecting the different aspects of system defence?

The changes to Scouts make doing CZs much harder. My own wing's setup (of a 6-modshard Conda and scoutshredder Krait MkII) seems to now barely be the minimum to clear even a surface CZ, so progress is probably dropping because solo CMDRs simply can't join the fight if they can't find an Open instance with enough other people.

Good job with adapting to it! I think Scouts will not last in their present form, mostly due to the incredibly low chance that they were supposed to have two different weapons at the same time, and at minimum because their combat pay is far too low to match it even if it was intended. Probably it was supposed to be only their starship targeting change and the arrival of Glaive wings; that way, a solo vessel would still be possible, but presumably it would make six Shards a wing-only notion. Then again, I wonder whether it was intended that Glaives can damage Guardian modules outside of a Maelstrom.

To answer my own question in the context of harvests, ironically I think would be now easier to do that solo, if one has the needed Fleet Carrier nearby! The first Control system Interceptor visit is now almost always a Cyclops, which saves a lot of time when you have nobody to keep it around once caught, and destroying a Scout pair occasionally will now keep the area Scout-free for several minutes. With a Shield cell in place of regeneration, 64 corrosive cargo for returning with 72+ samples and choosing landfall targets to avoid swarms, that would need five relatively easy runs for a solo Commander to clear an empty Control system at 30+ light-years from a Maelstrom.

Laumas is slow due to there being a bug - no passenger missions. Despite this people are seeing what they can do anyway. I've been doing AX Reactivations instead, 18 done and counting. Also had to put out a warning to those doing AX Reactivations - only take ones to bodies around the first star in Desurinbin, the second star is 450,000Ls away. Even if you make it out there the amount of interdictions on the way will be insane.

The horizontal Control progress from these new surface missions is interesting. While none of those systems will finish naturally that way, it is softening some of them to the point of being decent enough for INIV to visit and complete in an evening. The first few evictions, were they enough to recommend to pilots looking for targets, are like this:
65 Kappa Tauri Control 12% — Indra 25 Ly
HIP 25679 Control 8% — Taranis 17 Ly
Desurinbin Control 6% — Cocijo 25 Ly
HIP 30158 Control 6% — Hadad 21 Ly

In particular, 65 Kappa Tauri and Desurinbin are approaching that point; unfortunately HIPs 25679 and 30158 are too close to their Maelstroms, although something like 50% at HIP 30158 could make it possible. I will have to check and update later today, but I am quite sure I can have 65 Kappa Tauri completed, with a hopefully-polite request to continue softening it in the meantime. If that works well today (with the result likely to be tomorrow morning), we can take a look at Desurinbin also, again if softened a bit more at that time.

They are doing very well—Laumas is rising quite quickly! If Desurinbin is within range for mission from Laumas (10.2 Ly), that secondary progress at Desurinbin is a very good choice, careful travel avoidance permitting. As above, with Desurinbin having a far enough Maelstrom distance (25 Ly), a bit of softening there can put it within the prospect of an evening visit for completion. I hope to demonstrate that at 65 Kappa Tauri!

Victory in Holvandalla!

I have a new toy for including those journal reports, which may be a questionable idea, but I will see how it goes! The actual Galaxy map number is still present, and in many cases more recent. For some very interesting insight, it also seems to show excess progress beyond 100%, and according to the journal reports we have a lot of over-completion at Hez Ur (145.1%), Juipedun (149.8%) and incredibly Hyades Sector AV-O b6-5 (175.1%)!

For even better value derived from seeing the over-completion, we can now just complete a Control system via its estimated difficulty then capture its real difficulty afterwards! I can say that Col 285 Sector OB-D b13-4 was exactly 425, OB-D b13-5 was 403, and Bagalya was 1781.

Speaking of Control systems, I am on the way to see what I can do for 65 Kappa Tauri (14%)! It is 25.42 Ly from M. Indra, which lies in a gap between my knowledge of Fotlandjera (19.69) and Yukait (26.15), but luckily @Grimscrub tells us here that it should be about the same as other systems further out! They do still appear to be on an exponential curve, but it seems that the very steep part below 20 Ly also means that it becomes very shallow and near-constant beyond 25 Ly.

Well I for one has abandoned this war as in Invasions in Solo with Krait II with 5EAXMC's could enjoy it for 18 weeks.
Even when I did go Open - I only ever saw 1 or maybe 2 Cmdrs, but was still do-able and enjoyed it.

NOW, forget it.
I still don't understand how sampling can get rid of Alerts or Control rather than Combat in CZ (RP BTW) as I have not read all the forums and social media.

That's not something that reading all the forums etc. would help you understand, since nobody there has set what tissue sampling is worth in the game, fdev have. It's simply what people have discovered by playing.

There are many ways to interpret that:
  • If you mean how is it done, the basic answer is a tough, shielded heavy vessel and the Universal multi-limpet used for eight Research limpets. Landfall harvests are much easier due to having no Swarm to answer, and a Wing is more efficient because you can regenerate shields and all can keep returning to the same Cyclops. I wrote a bit about Wing harvests earlier, though some is now outdated. Generally we are still working things out, especially since update 15.
  • If you mean why harvests can progress systems quite quickly, indeed that is set by Frontier; probably its efficacy is a little high, my guess being that it was treated favourably after putting in all that work to make Salvage items track the system from which they were taken. That said—it uses a good amount of special equipment, really needs a Wing to work well, and definitely needs a Fleet Carrier.
  • If you mean for what reason would harvested samples progress a system at all... I do not think anyone knows that! At least with injured escape pods it is likely that those evacuees are part of a cycle which returns to the system to help fight some more after they are healed, however thus far my best guess for the Research samples is that they are not as corrosive when cooked properly.

Speaking of which, said harvest for 65 Kappa Tauri has been delivered! Many thanks to those who helped the system a bit more; we were watching the Journal progress and revising the amount needed. For an approximate measurement to come (given that additional actions there could be ongoing), it was on 16.7092% just before/during delivery of 1556 samples.

I'd imagine that much of what the thargoids do is tantamount to how animals migrate in nature.

Fighting things is in their nature; the guardians realized this after attempting communication.

Thargoids getting bits chewn off and prodded is most likely what makes them veer off.

(sorry for off topic)

Needing a wing & specialized equipment is what makes the encounters endgame, and requiring group efforts even more so.

We have a measurement for 65 Kappa Tauri not long after finishing the harvest, and it looks like it was estimated very well:
  • The journal progress just prior was 16.7092%
  • Based on a 1800 estimate, 1500 were needed and 1556 were delivered
  • The journal just after was 103.4523%
  • That 86.7431% difference places the actual difficulty at 1794
With another hopefully-polite request to continue advancing Desurinbin and planning for a Wednesday harvest there, I am quite sure that we can finish it! Again, this is due to its 25 Ly Maelstrom distance; the progress at HIP 25679 may look deceptively similar, but its 17 Ly distance makes it a nothing-but-that-all-week venture as far as a harvest completion is concerned.

to get the 103% (* about time you there harvesting), I was also there doing stuff it'll include 1 to 3 of new ground missions several scout kills and about million credits in revenant kills. but before to get the 16% It was more than just me though, and I had maybe dozen successful ground activations, maybe 5 million in revenant.

Some of us will be continuing with restores there until Laumas is cleared, at least. Feel free to send in the militant dermatologists any time.
