The Elite Community(In My Experience)

As a geologist I can confirm I'm younger than most dirt. I think there was an oil crisis when I was born, or maybe it was just something the hippies talked about. The Vietnam War was still going, but the Beatles had split up. Elvis was still around. Denmark and the UK also joined the EU the year I came to be.

Yes, the community here is nice. Hop on in, the water is fine.

:D S

So this post will require a bit of backstory. Before I started playing Elite early this year, I played a game called World of Tanks Blitz. Played it basically since day 1 and became one of the best players, to the point where I actually took part in a tournament where if my clan(squadron in Elite lingo) won, we’d have been paid to go to Las Vegas and play on a national stage. Needless to say those of you who have experience with competitive gamers knows where this is going. Competitive gamers tend to have extreme competitiveness and hyper aggression as traits, especially in games like that one. This makes them better players, but it also makes them social cancer. However, this community(WoTB) as a whole was known for toxicity, the experts were just even more so.

Ive been in a couple other gaming communities before, none of them exactly nice, so I expected more of the same from Elite. I expected that if I said something that I believed to be true but wasn’t actually that people would give the usual response. You know the one. ā€œLol noob ur so stupid!ā€ That kind of stuff. If I stated an opinion about a ship that others disagreed with I expected more of the same. I expected people to be the usual unhelpful, incredibly rude, and general cancerous behavior you normally see from gamers and that has been the usual standard in my experience.

Yet that hasn’t happened. If I said something wrong, someone just politely corrected me. If I have a differing opinion, no one makes a fuss about it. People have been remarkably pleasant to me thus far. Sure you’re gonna find the occasional person in game who will try to kill you for no particular reason, but that’s just a hazard of playing a game online. Hell in one instance during one of the community goals where systems were seceding from the Federation I entered a Combat Zone that had already been completed by a player, he asked me which side I was fighting for in the event, and when I told him I was fighting against the Federation(not on his side), even though Combat Zones are Lawless areas where he could’ve killed me with no issues, he didn’t even make an attempt.

For whatever reason the community is like this, I want to say something to all of you.

Thank you.

Thank you for not being toxic. Thank you for being overall a kind and courteous community of people. Thank you for helping me when I have questions. Thank you for offering a carrier to dock at for repairs and resupply when I’m 20,000 LY away from the nearest station and need a place to do some patchwork. Thank you for your words of encouragement and congratulation when I find or do something I feel proud of. Thank you for being decent human beings. You almost never see that, at least in my experience, in an online gaming community.
And thank you for taking the time to write that ... I think this community is great too, and it's always good to be reminded of that fact.

Oh, and 0x39 by the way.

My experience, in general, has been the players in-game are pretty cool and when it comes to interaction between players. However, the relationship between the players and FDev is something else. From my review on Steam:

"The craziest part, though, is the co-dependent abusive relationship between FDev and a good portion of the fan base. It's like watching a married couple who hate each other, won't get a divorce and spend their time passive-aggressively torturing one another using their child as a weapon.

No matter what FDev does, some players are going to hate them. On the other side, no matter what the players want, FDev simply refuses to give it to them and provides no reasons for the refusal. And then, inexplicably, FDev gives players either A) something they never asked for, or B) a version of what the players asked for, but not actually the way they wanted it."

There's a lot to like about the Elite Dangerous Community and it's hard to put into words sometimes.
The fact that many commanders are a bit older (47 here myself), is one factor I guess. It's more cunning - not always friendly - debates rather than pure toxic nonsense you see in the forums (mostly), but also in many non-moderated spots elsewhere in the Internet.

And there are a lot of Discord channels dedicated to Elite.
I'm a person that usually can deal with being alone very well. I actually enjoy it.
But there was a time several years ago, when my girlfriend - well, actually she was my fiancee at the time - died, and I was in a very dark deep place. Not depressive, just sad...
I think this is also something that maybe older people can relate to better than youngsters these days.
Sometimes there is nothing wrong with being sad. You have a reason.

Anyway, I had played the first Elite and I got Elite Dangerous in the Beta before it was first released. And I found some refuge in the game.
And naturally then I listened to Radio Sidewinder and Lave Radio.
And then I talked to some commanders on Discord. Met real nice people like Drew Wagar, but also dozens of others.

And it was refreshing, because all my friends and family of course knew what had happened, but they didn't.
I could just chit-chat about Elite, astronomy, politics between the three factions (gosh - I'm so Imperial) and that - among many other things, mind you, my more grounded Bushcraft friends also helped - kindled a little spark in me and I found relief and soon joy again in my writing, painting. Even work sometimes. ;)

It's not a magic community, it's not Arcadia. But there are a lot of nice and decent people here and I'm happy to be part of this community in my own small way.

And in the spirit of Christmas-almost-here-again I'd also like to say: Thank you!
And also thanks to those who liked my Elite blog... Update soon (TM). ;)

I think the Elite community is basically the same as every other "this community is so nice". Say things that they like and you are good. But boy mention pvp or that the game has flaws and they want to excommunicate you

also very nice messages from community too:

You are right, Elite is no different from other MMO games that allows PvP, as there is always a small but very vocal group of pro-PvP players, that keeps repeating the same kind of plea for changes that aims to force pro-PvE players to engage in PvP, as otherwise there would be to few players to sustain PvP.

So is there a surprise when you (or someone else) is trying to impose you wish for gameplay on other players, that some of these players will have issues with that? Add to this, that pro-PvP players often make suggestions or supports suggestions, that would make changes to make PvP more mandatory, or in other words more unavoidable, like the re- occurring suggestion to change how block function works, just mute the chat, but allow you to attack the player, ie, forcing your way of playstyle onto other players. Compare this to how many times have pro-PvE players suggested to totally remove PvP? Take the Open PvE suggestion, they are not calling out for removing the current open mode. they are only wanting to add a second Open mode. so that players can choose if they want engage in PvP or not, because morst of the time, pro-PvE players can accept that other players want to play this game different from how they play, and that is fine with, as long as they do not have to be forced into that kind of game play. Pro-PvP players on the other hand need the PvE players, to fill out the ranks, so pro-PvP need PvE players to become their content,.

Pro-PvE players do not need PvP players to enjoy their game. they can happily play solo or just along other players without, without having any need to attack them.

Pro-PvP players often need to have more players enged in PvP activites, as otherwise there are to few players to shoot at. There is especially true for a certain kind of PvP players, that get enjoyment from attacking weaker PvE players, that is doing PvE stuff, so this will of course lead clashes, where one group of player, is optimizing their ship for one task alone, without having to sacrifice much on their build for optimum performance, then they attack players that want to optimize their build for a very different task. Then in the aftermath we will see all the usual victim blaming tactics, like the git gud comments, prepare your ship better, etc. So now the victim needs to adjust their game play, adjust their build to be much less optimal for their desired game play, just to accommodate the desires of another player group, that as said earlier, very rarely needs to make any sacrifices to their builds to enjoy their preferred game play.

So, basically, welcome to playing boomercore games.
Sims are really popular with "older" crowds, like 30+ who dont really give a crap about what tournament you played in or how good you are, like, honestly bragging about being good at video games is a turn off to 90% of the crowd you will meet here.

Literally we just want the game to be fun and good, and enjoy it. THats it.... welcome to boomercore gaming friend.

Ok, boomer.

Probably something to do with the fact that ED (Erectile Disfunction?) is a PvE game.

Sadly the same people exposed to some level of PvP get whingy, obnoxious even rude - sore losers. I have a big collection of screenshots of chat comments from cqc arena from the time when local chat in DM was accidentally enabled.
If during Lavecon I mentioned who I am I think some people might not have been so nice anymore :ROFLMAO:

ED is not really a competitive game, and that is probably what attracts many players with a rather calm disposition. Some people organise competitions in more or less creative ways, but competition is clearly not in the game's genes. Some others try here and there to impose competition on others, where they can act out their killer instinct or simply want to dominate others. This then usually ends in great frustration for one or the other side and endless forum PvP. But at least we have the 3 modes that separate them nicely.

The only real standout exception is CQC, which has embedded real competition in the game mechanics. However, it is fair to ask whether this is still really Elite, isn't it?
I'd say Elite is highly competitive: Community Goals and their rankings and rewards, BGS, Powerplay, Squadron Ranking, explo tagging, direct pvp combat.

It's just some people don't want to be competitive ;)

Holy moly, those messages, I still have no words for that kind of toxicity. I played league of legends, DOTA 2, Warthunder, Counter strike etc. And I thought those games were toxic cesspools. But this, this easily makes it into the top 5 most toxic things I have encountered in gaming.

I really do hope these people got reported,
And Fdev dealt with them accordingly. Because this is just, yeah those messages are just on another level of toxic......

They all are competitive in a way.. but it's anything goes. No matter how they do it, all it matters is that shiny virtual badge they get.

Many don't want other CMDR to stand in the way of their "success" so they stay in Solo which is fine.

Where it goes wrong is when they come to CQC Arena with such "participation medals for everyone" attitude. They have no sense the CQC is PVP and any rewards have to be earnt in PvP manner.. so quite a few cheat, exploit etc. for those virtual badges they don't deserve.

I think I ran into you in CQC when I had a quick few plays a couple of years ago... (I had a week or so of trying to 'git gud' - it didn't work :ROFLMAO: )

Bar the shouted expletives (which amused my wife no end!) most of the sessions were drowned in laughter at how quickly I was back at the launch countdown...

I keep promising myself to go and do some more as it is pure fun, somewhat hectic, for sure. Maybe after Christmas - I'm sure our paths will cross if I do, and the expletives will fly once more, as will the laugter!

Not sure if that is true. In EVE we had a very long standing rivalry with another corporation, which turned into a full-blown alliance squabble.
No side got the upper hand, but the world was very red for a long time. Which was fun, because everything in EVE is PVP.
But when we met in real life, of course we'd have some beers together and have a fun day and joke about the war.
And then we'd be back at it with full ferocity the next day.

The same was true of people we had pirated, dragged into merc wars or generally not treated nicely.
Because sane people know the difference between the game world and real world. (And, no, I'm not one of those "it's only a game, so everything can be gamey" types. In fact I want to feel as much as possible to be inside the game world. It must be believable within it's own laws. But once I turn the game off, there's only me left.)

Of course, some people are rather unpleasant characters in both worlds, but that's quite natural too I'd say.

Nah. It's just different parties not understanding each other due to crappy communication and different perspectives and experiences. Disappointing, but hardly crazy.

It's just frustrated people venting. May not even be much about ED, people are blowing up left and right with everything going on right now. Not an excuse, those messages are absolutely unacceptable. But if it's just one rage message it's just a dude at the end of his rope losing his .

Real toxic behaviour is much more insidious, pervasive and, ultimately, potentially dangerous. If you'd still get these messages from him the day after, or he tries to find you on LinkedIn...

If it was a "**you!" Or "**off!", then yes I totally agree just frustrated people venting.
And stalking people like that is out of the world toxic.

But those are messages are definitely real toxic they are absolutely disgusting. Even if people are blowing up right and left. Those messages should never have been sent under any circumstance.

Edit:
What makes me even more disgusted, is that those messages were highly likely been sent by adults. like atual grown ups that sent those messages because something went wrong in a videogame......
