The FFED3D Thread

Good grief, even with a much bigger ship and 100 shield generators I still can't seem to survive an attack of three or four nasties. Damn, this game is hard.

Does anyone know of a way to reduce the mouse-sensitivity in the game? It's so jerky that I sometimes find it very hard to hit a target, even when it's within about half a kilometer away!

Adrena1in is right. It seems much tougher than when I played a few years back. I have been destroyed 10 times without even managing to target an enemy.

LOL! Yes, maybe some of us are just too old now. My 5 year old son regularly beats me on gran turismo 3. Oh well, it's back to Sol then. Maybe Mr Braben will include an easy option in elite 4 for the old duffers, like me, who can actually remember when elite 1 was first released.

You and me both Capt Zap :)

I was actually pretty useless at the original Elite, as I could never get the hang of the controls. When Frontier came along it felt right straight away, which is why I hold a genuine "Elite" rating in FFE :p

Here's hoping Elite IV sticks with the Frontier control method.

Reverse thrust issue in D3D-FFE

I've been looking around, and I can't seem to find anyone else mention this.

Does anyone else have an issue with the reverse thrust control on this version. I've tried altering the settings in some of the files that come with it.

Accelleration is still keyed to enter, and deceleration/reverse thrust was always shift. Is this still the same and bugged or has it been moved?

I can't get my ship to slow down which caused a bit of crater related issue when I tried to approach a planet for a mission.

I landed somewhat quicker and firmer than was intended, apparently the undercarriage doesn't like touching down when your speed is still measured in kms...

Edit

Erk - this is more serious - I cannot reverse thrust in any version of JJFFE either. Are there any vista compatability issues for JJFFE/D3D?

Or am I just being dense and pressing the wrong button?

My laptop is less than five months old, and the keys are in full working order. Can anyone give me a clue. Without reverse thrust anything that doesn't need the autopilot is going to be nearly impossible.

I believe the cause is much more trivial and mundane - someone you fought used their laser to make your retros one with your hull.

Better use full manual (wrongly called "engines-off"), as autopilot won't work without retros, you'll have to brake with your main, flying backwards, to get to the nearest station/starport and get them fixed.

This or it might be some vista specific issue - I don't know as I don't use vista which is very crappy OS, even by MS standards.

Sounds like the game perhaps doesn't recognise your SHIFT key, which might be a Vista thing I suppose. Which is the key on the keypad for reverse thrusters? Is it 4 and 6, or 2 or something? Anyway, does that one work?

I can just about survive a 3 or 4-ship attack against my Puma Clipper as long as they're only small and have no more than 1MW or perhaps 4MW beam lasers. After several such skirmishes the other day I was quite pleased that my kill-rating was increasing nicely as I'm still on "Below Average"...less than 32 kills or something! But the next time my "Under Attack" claxons brought me out of Stardreamer I just about had time to look down at the scanner before something cut through my 100 shields and hull.

Seriously, how can anyone avoid that sort of situation? Quite literally less than one second between being warned about an attack and being killed when I'm armed and protected as much as I was?! It's a shame, because I've not loaded up the game since and I can see no reason to. :(

I think I might go back to Elite 1, as that was pretty easy...even in Witch-Space with a couple of Thargoids and a dozen Thargons flitting around...

It is impossibly difficult to survive. I'm sure it wasn't this hard before. I've installed GLFrontier now and that is much more like what I remember. But I feel bad that i'll be missing the D3D eye candy.

Sadly I did consider it was an in-game issue, but I'm afraid it isn't - I can't get any of the start up ships to reduce speed either. Enter will set the forward speed, but shift will not reduce it.

This has helped a little. Keypad 8 and 5 seem to control accelleration and deceleration, but only engine off. Not certain how well a planet landing or a photography run will go engines off, but that may be my only option.

I've also just retried typing in my commander's name - and sure enough, I cannot get a capital letter using the shift key, so it seems that for some reason my shifts are ignored.

Does anyone know of a way to reassign key functions. There is a .cfg file in the main folder that contains a key map - but that doesn't seem to alter anything in game.

If it is a vista related issue - check your bulletin boards. I may be putting out a "Biographical" notice for Bill Gates.

Hope someone has a solution

Just out of interest - what colour are the lasers being fired at you? Is it green?

The guys in D3D have jiggled around with so much, perhaps they have removed a flag on the Thargoid laser. If that is registering as a commodity, then any pilot can equip it -pirates and militaries included.

100 shields won't stand up to that one long...

Have you tried changing the executable so that it's running in compatibility mode, perhaps for XP?

That may help if it's a Vista problem.

Thanks for the tip - tried it, but sadly not working.

I've now tried plugging in an external keyboard. No change in function. The game is simply not recognising the shift command from my PC. It has to be an internal issue.

I've got a hp pavillion dv7 laptop running Windows Vista 64bit if that means anything to anyone.

Has anyone else got any form of FFE (JJFFE, GLFFE or D3D) running on Vista 64 bit?

I'm running Vista Home Premium, which is a bit different, but the right-Shift key works fine for deceleration. Very odd :(
