The FFED3D Thread

LOL, I had the same issue a few years ago, but soon got back into the hang of it.
...
Might have to start a new commander again from scratch :rolleyes: for practice for 2014 (slow learner :D)

I realised what I was doing wrong - trying the missions too quickly when all I had was a Saker. Now I am being more careful ,keeping to well travelled routes and trying to avoid the pirates until I can upgrade.

You see even I have been spoiled by the immediacy of the latest games and forgotten that a lot of the older games actually take some time to get proficient at them.

I think you can see the difference explicitly with the new XCOM remake - what a waste of time that was. They haven't managed to capture anything of the 'epic' nature of the original game. Surely kids these days aren't that different to how we used to be? Don't they have patience anymore? Has everything got to be fed immediately to them on a plate? I see it in my kids too even though I am trying to get them to appreciate that 'good things come to those who wait'.

I think when I was a kid (well, 15) in 1993 I had a lot more patience than most of my friends. I got really into Elite 2 and I don't think anyone else I knew did. Most of my close mates were busy enjoying the immediacy of Street Fighter 2.

It is sad though, it's much more prevalent now, though whether that is marketing telling us that rather than reality I don't know. My nephews really enjoy Minecraft, which i have never played, but it doesn't look too immediate.

My biggest fear is that E4 is compromised in this way, and that it isn't tough enough at the beginning. Because when I look back, I think the early stages of poverty and dubious skills were the most fun stages of FE2 and FFE for me.

I think you know the answer to that, hehehehe...

We (I) had to start working when I was 14 to afford that which my single mom couldn't get. The Atari 1040ST that I got to play Frontier on, was handed down by a friend because his mom got an IBM PC from work - no way I could buy that with our money at the time. Most of kids my age at the time were like this.
Today, kids get almost anything from their parents (us?) because we've lived through tough times and want our kids to live a better life.
The negative consequences of this is that, as you say, they're used to things on a platter...

Jukka's Mod

Heya all!

To begin with, I'm the author of the 2002's modification to JJFFE, commonly referred to as "Jukka's Mod" or "Jukka Mikkonen's mod". :) I've been away from Elite for the past ten years, but got sucked back. Only to see there's not one but two new versions since JJFFE was the latest. :)

Anyway, I've seen a whole lot of misconceptions about it flying around, so here's a mini-readme.

Jukka's mod (tries) to address the following issues:

1) No variability in ship designs in terms of cargo space/hull tonnage ratio. Since hull mass has no other gameplay importance besides hitpoints and dragging down your hyperspace range, I deemed it a bit strange that f.ex. freighters didn't have more cargo space - AFTER deducting for its hyperdrive. Conversely, heavy fighters had their hull strength increased while gaining a military drive as standard.

2) Many tiny ships were just too tiny - you couldn't mount much of anything besides hyperdrive, even if many designs boasted several missile pylons. So the ship cargo holds start at around 20 tons. (Except for the Interplanetary vessels, which MUST have been a joke to begin with.)

3) Most would agree that installing anything past 20MW beam laser is rather pointless. That's because weapons get stupid overpowered long before that. Hence, I drastically reduced the power of upper end weapons, to about a square root of what it was. Now you'd actually WANT a Large Plasma.

4) Trading. It was just *too* profitable in so many ways, especially compared to the risks involved if you only did milk runs between Sol & Barnard's. Main culprits here were double price BBS ads - you mostly saw those for stuff that was already high-priced to begin with, rendering most other trade items totally obsolete as soon as you could afford buying a cargo hold's full of Luxury Goods. Fix: I (tried to) make sure you'd never see out of stock on anything but low to medium priced items. You'd still see the occasional "Out of Stock" item in low-pop, civil war type systems, but having fought your way in, you pretty much DESERVED it.

5) Smuggling. The same deal as with trading - double price for everything just as long as you can afford the occasional fine. Perfectly safe, too, if you select some of the infamous routes such as Sol - Van Maanen's Star. Fix: Only thing I could come up with was a general division by ten of ALL trade items. It's still lucrative business, just quite not stupidly so.

6) Other professions. Sure you could get some pocket change by bounty hunting, but come on - getting to Elite status, many times over, just to be able to afford a Panther Clipper on bounties alone? Fix: Increased bounties all across the board, to about ten-fold.

Now the big question: Is there any interest for such a mod, if I were to try my hacking skills on the FFED3D binary and/or collaborate with them? :p

Absolutely !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any updates/improvements I think would be fantastic.

FFED3D however does not work properly for so many people missing icons etc and I know the team are working on a new one but that could take years. :-(

Well, there were three showstoppers that annoyed me about FFE:

1. Ship combat. This involves multiple things. One being that full newtonian combat degraded it into "jousting matches", where piloting skill mattered much less than accuracy and ship/equipment. Obviously, there's not much you could do in this regard. The other one was how much winning a fight with a small to medium craft, did depend on luck, because: A) Both combatants "spawned" very closely to each other B) A single hit could kill you. Since you said that in your mod, you toned down weapons a lot, maybe this would "fix" this aspect. Is it possible for you to increase the spawn distance a bit?

2. That ships had so little identity, because you mostly able to modify them at will. As you said already, you tweaked this in your mod.

3. Autopilot crashing my ship into stations/planets.

Yeah, ship combat surely isn't what it was in FE2. However, doing it jousting style is doing it wrong - you're supposed to use thrusters manually or let your set speed take care of thrusting in whatever direction you're pointing at. Otherwise you're just making too easy of a target of yourself.

I got a real crash course in fighting yesterday, doing Facece/Vequess/Sohoa military runs in a Viper Mk2 plus the obligatory 1MW pulse laser. First I got attacked 3 vs 1. A while later, an Imperial Explorer (!) wanted me dead, spewing half a dozen Naval Missiles (!!) at me. To add insult to injury, just some 2 AU before the base I got into a 5 vs 1 pirate raid. I survived them all.. after some 50+ reloads to hone off the rust from my oldskool skills. :cool:

However, after "upgrading" to an Imperial Courier a while later, it quickly dawned on me that the medium-large ships are arguably the worst in combat. You can't avoid incoming damage anywhere nearly as well, but you still haven't the room for 50+ shields to just keep on taking it. And whatever you do, you're dead in an eyeflash as soon as someone points their 100MW beamer at you. In a smaller ship you MIGHT expect to avoid it altogether, much less so in a large one.

Hence, dropping the damage of upper end weapons together with a general increase in cargo space (for shields) SHOULD enable the mid upper sized category to become playable again.

Or does someone have actual, in-game FFE experience of using anything between, say, Lion Trader to Puma in actual combat? How do you do it in that case?

I GOT THE ICONS TO WORK !!!

OK, firstly I am not using a graphics card, the graphics chip on my motherboard is definitely nVidia

I downloaded the FFED3D from Synchromesh's site

I right-clicked on the FFED3D exe and in compatibility I ticked the box that says "Disable visual themes"

Here is what I changed the ffewin.cfg file to :

Code:
[VIDEO]
fullscreen=1
aspectfix=0
modelexport=0
wireframe=0

# Set parameters separately for fullscreen (fs) and windowed (win)
# Switch between with Ctrl-F12

# Fullscreen parameters
fswidth=1280
fsheight=1024
fsbpp=32

# Windowed parameters
winwidth=800
winheight=600

The full screen parameters is my monitor's resolution, so if yours is different, set it to that.
Note also that fullscreen=1 ... this opens the file in full screen mode.

And that's it. I was going to list what mods I used, but I tried the game without any mods and the icons still show.
One little niggle, when I launch the game I get a message saying the CD is not in the drive, but I just click on cancel and ignore it and the game loads anyway.

I hope this helps

Given that you have *overly* tried almost anything software related....

...i'll state the obvious: Hardware or (available) drivers.

Yeah, this shouldn't exist in theory - yet, it does. I know some dev of an audioplayer, and it gives me nightmares for just for how many soundchips and soundrivers, he implements "workarounds" just because the hw vendors wont fix their stuff.

I dont know, I did use go ap to an ASP Explorer added a 1MW Beam Laser with laser cooler many shields.... but still now if you get attacked by 3-4 pirates I have no chance... they kill me in a view seconds.... thats disapointing

I did try also different settings, its quiet confusing... 1. I thought is was the NVIDIA card, but that is not true. I think they are many things involved, also the resolution you choose has affects.

I did get better results adding a 2 monitor to my LAPTOP (as main monitor). I did manage to play this way with 1280x1024 and also 1920x1200 with around 30fps (FULL SCREEN)!! for some reason I did get more trouble if I use the internal display with 1600x900

ummmm errrrr if you read my OP you would have seen I tried all that. I have a line where I mentioned the compatability mode options.

oh and yes I did it with Synchromesh's download.

I shall update the OP to list it was all attempted with Synchromesh's download as well.

Thanks for trying but no go. As soon as I got Synchromesh's version I tried it ALL over again.

I was only trying to help
I thought that if maybe I had all the problems you did, Styggron, and yet I finally got them to work,
it might help you (and others) if I explained what I did.
I'm sorry it still didn't work for you, please don't give up,
there may still be a way, some little thing that makes the difference

This matches with what the Russian team said yes. This is why it's going to be years so doesn't look like they will try to fix the icon bug unfortunately.

From what I can make out from the Google translation of the Elite Russia forums, the lead programmer has to go and do some military service. If so, that's gonna slow things down big time :(

I guess we need to send a "cease and desist" order to the Russian military then as FFED3D CLEARLY is more important.
