The FFED3D Thread

FFE3D is really a great project, but my biggest gripe with it (aside from some performance problems) is that there is no feeling of movement in space.

Look at the video:

When in space, there are no particles/stars moving at you. Even when you set stardreamer to max. This gives it a very static feel.

Any solution for that?

What a great video! :p

You're right about the lack of any feeling of motion in deep space though. As far as I know, the Russian folks are aware of it and looking to fix it in The Next Release.

lack of space dust

i didn't think any external setting will help, to bring back space dust :(
but i wouldn't be gernot if i didn't looked for the reason (or a possible one).
first i suspected the space dust might be produced by a field of vertices, cause when you open model 109 with "3d exploration" you can see a field of tiny polys or vertices (i suspect, cause only this prog. shows them). but after i checked the (text) output of ffe in theonis "frontier mesh viewer" i can say it's a ball array, so i tried to double the size of the ball_s for a first try...... (and erhm, theonis if you read this, 4000 (or 0040) is not 32768 only 64 or 128 if you double (why?), but i understand this backwards, f0rwards reading of data gets my head twisted too, the ball_s would be very big then, or maybe i'm wrong).

cowabunga :D there they are back again (a bit fast and still very tiny).
i will post a altered .exe on ssc so you can check it out. i'm not shure why they are "filtered" out and if it's the program (distance or fog setting) or windows or grafx card, but i think they are simply to small to be seen.

i think further little tunings could be done, but i haven't the time to search and fix them all, personally i would like to see the targeting tunnels in ffed3d, i think it's a font issue (the tunnels are pruduced by the vector font i'm shure). but since ffed3d ports the strings of fe2 through a different codetable everything is mixed up, why they don't used the original fonts, even when the bitmap font is a bit crappy?

check if stardust's vanished even at the lowest possible res. ffed3d runs in
maybe this could be fixed too with ffed3d distance/tesselation setting, i'm not shure, any way this would make ffed3d only slower.

Well, I played today quite much FFE D3D, and got to the rockforth legal academy mission, problem: the academy didn't show up on the planet. Can't find the *rontier. (the ships that guard the academy appeared though, and attacked me in deep space. I know that they were the guard ships, because they had those weird IDs)

I didn't tried other planet buster missions. Maybe they don't work at all in FFE D3D?

Does the legal academy missions works for you guys?

FAQ - rus:

Problem: I do not see the enemy base on the planet (in the scheme of stellar
system - a star on the planet surface).
Solution: Try to twist planet with mouse on the scheme planet star system - an icon base may appear on the boundary of the disk of the planet.
If you do not help - before to fly into the system, try using a different version of the game (jjffe or so...) .

Well, yes. I've found it by moving the planet many times in the orbital map back and forth until I saw the tiny dot.

Didn't find it the second time though. A pretty nasty bug, since it bombs all the bombing and photography missions.

Any idea whether this will be fixed in the new version?

Zooming around in Celestia - even at high warp speeds - one's similarly struck by how little sensation of motion there is. Really though what you're getting is an impression of scale - things only seem to speed up when relatively close, which happens rarely even at ludicrous speeds, because space is big.

How could it be more realistic? The 'space dust' effect we're used to is probably a bit of an artistic licence if you think about it, you wouldn't expect to see anything like that in reality. It'd be pretty much like it is in that vid i reckon.

boulder, sorry are we talking about the same game?
if you know frontier well space dust is present (even if you're right you won't see in reality, but you wan't also hear any sound, where's the fun?) and gives you the feel of flight in space, what i did is simply to double the size of the "particles" to make them be seen again in ffed3d. ;)

foremost we should really fix that font issue, it i will fix a lot of graphical problems.
there's a distance limit in frontier beyond which point objects are not drawn and be replaced through a dot, i'm not shure by now how that dot is generated, it could be a array or just use of font (i think it's a symbol because it didn't get's smaller by distance). if it's so we can search to the end of time for a fix, if the typefaces of frontier not be displayed proper.

does someone got a amiga codetable, i would be very interested in, because i have a certain idea.

There are also plenty of threads regarding FFED3D
(and lots of other things on this forum)

Check out the link at the bottom of this post

I didn't think it would be ok to include external links in the Index as Frontier tends to frown on that sort of thing.

If a moderator gives me the OK though, I'll add them to the Index.
