The FFED3D Thread

Right just got home and I just tried Izzit's version.

Works fine (bar full screen of course) icons are there, graphics look pretty much the same, I see the interface tweaks. I set the graphics to very high, is there something else I need to do or change ?

I know it's 400 odd meg larger so I gathered it is all textures yes ?

Besides bugs that came in on new effects I added, like atmosphere. The other bugs were previously there. Many of the bugs you see in the into are there, but fixed in the game itself. For some reason rendering stuff for the intro was done separately. If/when you guys notice things wrong let me know. I'll try and fix as many bugs as I can.
OK - so here's a list of all the issues I've found in the beta. Some of them have been reported before, so apologies if I list issues you already know about.
  • Texture clipping at planet surfaces. You can see right through the planet in some parts (Example).
  • Outlines between texture panels that make up mountain ranges (Example).
  • Some textureless planets. Earth has no surface or water textures (Example).
  • The atmosphere around Ammonia planets (e.g. Venus) looks too bright (Example).
  • Atmosphere around living planets is jumpy when you zoom in and out of planets.
  • There is a weird clipping effect on Brown Dwarf objects (Example).
  • Planetary rings are visible right through the planet (Example).
  • Landing lights have lost their soft aura (Example). I think the alpha layer's missing on tex603.png.

And below is a list of questions/requests that have always been there, but relate to the same area (i.e. drawing of planets):
  • I think all planets with an atmosphere (e.g. gas giants) should have an atmospheric glow. Is it easy to imlpement the same as with living planets?
  • Is it possible to get textures mapped on to planetary rings?
  • At far distances, planets are drawn as a featureless small circle. When you get close enough, that circle is immediately replaced with a drawing of the planet which sometimes looks like it appears from nowhere. Is it possible to increase the drawing distance for planets?

Phew! I think that's all. Thanks so much for putting the time and effort into this - it is *really* appreciated.

I think (I hope!) Ittiz, Steve and Andyj are all talking to each other about the modifications they're making.
Am I the Steve you're referring to here, 'cos I'm not making any mods (apart from changing the in-game font and a few other things).
As I understand it, Ittiz is re-vamping the look of the game as well as bug fixing and currently his work is available as a torrent file.
AndyJ has done a few bug fixes (cockpit icons and possibly planet targets) which results in a much smaller download, but it's not currently available anywhere AFAIK :(

I don't even know any more.

I just saw your name mentioned in an earlier post and thought you were doing some development...

:D

Brilliant work Ittiz. Would love to know everytime you make updates and I am happy to seed indefinitely.

I think I've made significant improvements over my last version and I'm ready to release beta 2. I haven't done anything with the intro, but the rest of the game is graphically better and less buggy. I fixed some bugs that go way back like grass tiles on the tops of snowy mountains. I've increased the planet detail significantly. If it makes your computer run slow (like mine) turn the graphical detail down in the game menu and it should run better. I've added a text file so people know which textures belong to which texture types. So it's easier to mod if you wish. Even though I put the videos in it the file is about 150 megs smaller than the last one.

Still a large number of bugs left to fix, most of the additions I wanted to add are in so this is progress.

Here's a link to the torrent

Sweet. I'm downloading it now. Can't wait to try it!

Thanks for all your hard work Ittiz!

:)

Hey all,
I will download and have a look aswell, will leave my Nas on so it should be seeding for quite a while :)

Will do the same with new updates

much love

I think this version is a bridge too far for my ageing system. If I can get it to run at all, it's putting out 1fps when pulling away from a planet, compared to 20+ in beta 1. Most times though, my system just crashes, maybe because the more detailed textures are overloading my graphics card. For me, for now, beta 1 is my only option

Well, the MODS folder is empty in the beta 2 download, which saves around 245MB :D

..but we're not missing anything, right? Downloading now, will seed overnight but hope this is the whole kit and caboodle - or do we need to copy over our mods folders to the new install?

If it's too slow copy the FFEwin.cfg from the previous beta. You will loose most of the extra planet detail however.

I've applied most of the best mods, if there are any particular ones you want that aren't already applied in the game you will need to copy them over.

Oh i wouldn't know what was what there, happy to presume you've chosen the best of what's available.

Had a quick test just now, and first off, it look gorgeous, looks like a higher polygon count on the planets? Atmospheric shader effects are luscious, can't switch between full-screen and windowed, and in FS mode i get a persistent taskbar flickering at the top of the screen, identifying it as your build. Framerate with planets in-view was, however, dismal... I didn't try lowering the detail, this is a half-decent rig though...

1090t @ 3.6 4gb (3.5 in xp32), gtx470 @ 3840x2048

Also tried 1920x960 - smoother, but still chokes when you get far enough from the planet that the whole planet is in view.. something to do with the LODs or summink?

Fantastic Ittiz, I'll download your beta two tomorrow morning (off peak period) and seed. Am still seeding your original one.

:)

Also re Beta 1, if I set to fullscreen 1366x768 I get no graphics, just black screen, in fact I need to pretty much stay on 800x600 or 900x700 max if I change the first figure to try to stretch things out...;.POW......I can hear the menus and music but no graphics come up.

Also I'm not sure if I am running this right because planets look pretty much the same as what I remember them being, so I need to fire up something special to see atmos hazes etc ? or go to a particular planet ? I have graphic detail set to extremely high. All I do is fire up the exe and that's it...

Thanks for the help in advance :)
