The FFED3D Thread

I suppose I should release beta 3 soon. There are a couple bugs I'd still like to solve before that though.
Sounds good! :)
I'm presuming the bugs you're squashing are related to the graphical issues that still remain. Good luck with that, but please don't forget about the frame rate. That's what killed beta 2 for me :(

Good news, Beta 3 is finally ready! I'll upload the torrent in a bit. There were a couple really tough to nail bugs I wanted to get out before releasing. I got them out, hopefully not introducing anymore!

The link to the Beta 3 torrent

A few notes, please use it in it's entirety. I activated SSE and MMX instructions to increase frame rate, so if you have a pre-pentium 3 processor it won't function. The frame rate should be much higher than beta 2, it is on mine, let me know if you still have issues. I added a new key to the ffewin.cfg so you will need the new one for sure!

Edit: People should start DLing as soon as they can. I'm expecting another big snow storm tomorrow that could knock my power out.

Frontier First Encounters D3D

Just an FYI for people who never leave the ED forum on here. I've been debugging Frontier First Encounters (the Direct3d reversed engineered version). It may wet your appetite a bit for ED. I'm not done with it yet so I will release a few more versions before I'm done. This does contain bugs. Check the post here

First impressions of beta 3...

On the plus side:

1. The frame rate is much improved from beta 2
2. The flickering at the top of the screen in fullscreen mode has gone
3. The stars no longer shine during the day, when viewed from a planetary surface (many thanks for this)

There are still problems to report :(

There are major problems when docked on a planet, in particular to do with transparent planets. If anything, this seems to have got worse with beta 3; the ground at London is see-through from virtually every angle.
Also, when lifting off from some planets (not all), the ships sinks into the planet but doesn't seem to hit anything. Raising the nose and firing the thrusters brings you up and away as if nothing had happened!

I'm mindful of the reference to using the package as a whole. Unfortunately, using the textures as supplied results in completely blank star charts, info screens, as well as the strange effect at places like Old Blackelk where everything seems to be in perpetual shadow. My solution is to replace the textures folder with the older ones supplied by Nanite2000.

I really want to like this version; it has many things going for it. It just seems that, particularly with the planets, more and more issues crop up. I'll play around with beta 3 and continue to seed it, but for now I'm sticking with beta 1 in windowed mode. Sorry!

Yep there are problems, it's still a beta.

Sounds like you have an issue with your video memory, I see no problem with the star charts. I may be able to correct that issue. Also I played around with the lighting a lot. Unfortunately the lighting for the base models and modded models is handled by completely different code. That is why I'd like to replace all the models. Though I have no skills in 3d modeling.

Ironically I fixed the polygon clipping bug, however the effect you're seeing is cause by the planet detail. I'm thinking of completely resetting the planet detail code. It seems one of the things that changes with detail differences is ground height in many places, the city position is fixed however, so it creates floating cities, and cities underground, that you can land on if you accelerate time to max, but you can see right through things once landed.

No need to apologize.

Ok I got Beta 3 and am seeding.

Ok the only thing I found in my first test is that the old bug of having to click UNDER options instead of ON them is now back which was fixed with Beta 1 and Beta 2. So now I find I can't click on any console button or menu option, I always need to click underneath for it to work.

This is rather odd. I even tried using the same .CFG file as I had in Beta 1 and 2 to no avail. Beta 3 seems to have that bug back for me at least.

I'm trying out more things and will see if I can replicate other issues people posted above for testing.

Fantastic job as always Ittiz.

:)

If it's any help, here's a short video showing some of the issues I've mentioned...

FFE D3D Beta 3

Wow what's with the video being all jumped up? What resolution are you running at, maybe I can replicate the problem.

As for the other problems you can see while launching, I'm aware of :) The scintillating you can see in the planet is caused by the new atmosphere effects. I'm working on these problems.
