THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

Trust me, people have stared at the skybox from every angle of the EAFOTS Sector, have aligned every starbox feature with each other from several angles for most of 3302. But nothing came out of it besides people seeing ghosts or aquiring different types of space-madness. My impression after listening to Drew yesterday was, that the Rift mystery is indeed more of a background story-type thing than actually something to be found there. He said that more than once: take a step back and look at the whole thing, think of the big picture. The bases and beacons have been added later to flesh things out, to point us to the possible story behind the Rift.

I once found a back dot on the skybox witch was only visible in this system (I check all nearby systems) and there was also no nebula or such in this direction. So I flew in its direction for ~3Ly in super cruise (over night) but it didn't change. [wacko]

Probably both - i am still convinced, that it has something to do with space itself in that region.

We apparently have the same model tin foil hat :)

Okay. This is going to be a long post. What follows is essentially my "Murder Board" of potentially relevant Galnet news articles. The list is HUGE and goes way beyond what, I think, most people have considered relevant to the Formidine Rift mystery.

Why do I say this? Well... I don't have the exact quote, nor do I remember who said it, but it has been mentioned that Frontier intended a much bigger puzzle behind Jaques Station going missing. CMDR Cly found Jaques way too soon. My understanding is that Frontier "folded" that intended content into something else. I think that the something else is the Formidine Rift and that explains why the Rift mystery has become something much bigger then it was originally designed to be. We now have Horizon's only content spread across not only the Formidine Rift but the Conflux and Hawkin's Gap.

I think it is quite clear now, based on the logs retrieved from the surface settlements, that the Rift mystery connects somehow to the alien "Flower" ships and thus quite possibly with the UAs, UPs, Barnacles and ... so much more.

The key thread, I think, to everything is Hyperspace.

Here's a timeline generated from Galnet.

[/SPOILER]

I left out a few things. Notably the Cerberus plague which I think was intended to be part of the tapestry but I think that eventually got rolled into the "technological plague" because UA bombing had better gameplay potential.

I also included a few Freelance reports where I thought they provided good commentary (yes, a few of those reports are mine).

A few discrepancies:

Drew's Hyperspace lore document states that hyperspace technology was invented early in the 2200's but the 5 July 3301 Galnet article indicates it was invented in the 22nd century. The early 2200's would place the discovery in the 23rd century.

A 12 August 3302 Galnet article states that modern frame shift drive technology was invented prior to the signing of the London Treaty in 3278. Drew's Hyperspace lore document states that the frame shift drive was perfected in the 3290s. This may not be a discrepancy though since it may have taken that long for the FSD to go from invention to perfection (much like how I'd prefer commerical travel on a 747 versus the Wright Flyer.)

Seems i've got the same tinfoil hat https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ERY-(Part-4)?p=5072119&viewfull=1#post5072119

I also think, this is about the Hyperdrive or/and Hyperspace/Witchspace. Also, since Spaceship One and the Antares are so closely linked together with pretty much everything else, i'll stand with my guess, that Hyperspace or the boundary of it are different around those areas of space. Also, it seems that the lore from the games before ED has not been discarded after all - probably only that part, where Humans and Thargoids worked together. Considering that this: http://daftworks.co.uk/elite/ has apparently been used by E:D, there is one thing in that timeline, that caught my eye:

3165 It is discovered that the alien races once indigenous to the Far Colonies region of space have gone. Those worlds that had human colony areas become human worlds as the colonies spread out. Those that did not now stand abandoned. It is surmised that they departed for Galaxy 2, somehow managing to find a method of travelling there. Humanity stands alone once more.

The biggest question that i have is: How much of the background, Drew used for his Oolite Saga (which also spins around the Planet Raxxla and very mysterious Ruins on other planets, that contain Gateways to different Dimensions (my guess would be, those are parallel universes) is actually "Canon" - i would not dismiss the possibility, that Hyperspace is one of these different Dimensions/parallel universes.

Then, there is daftworks theory about the different galaxies:

One idea I have come up with recently and fits the parameters required is the possibility of stable wormholes. The hyperspace realm may contain stable wormholes within it – these are the equivalent of hyperspace tunnels that never collapse. The highly powerful IGH creates a hypertunnel linking with that wormhole, which then carries the craft to the other end of the wormhole. Seeing as the Thargoids are highly advanced and know far more than humanity about the workings of hyperspace, they will also know about these wormholes.

Using this theory, it can be postulated that the other seven galaxies are regions of space within our galaxy, but separated by hundreds or even thousands of light years. It could be surmised that all eight regions of space are in a roughly circular pattern, allowing travel between only two directly. Thargoid space could theoretically be situated somewhere in the centre.

If the stable wormholes were to collapse, this would explain the fact that the other seven regions cannot be travelled to in Frontier, and that the IGH no longer exists.

As i said, i believe it's space itself, that is different in and around these regions. And since the Guardians seem to have "vanished"...
I also found out, that there are apparently more Black Holes in that region, most notably Phae Phlai AA-A h0

A question from the uninitiated:
I was just looking at the passanger board at Jameson Memorial and I saw a mission to take someone to EAFOTS to check out a rally point for the children of Raxxla. The destination was not near the EAFOTS known spots.

The question is: do missions like this offer clues?
Are there tourist beacons that far out of the bubble with interesting information?

Seeing how the aliens ruins are a mess I'm considering other ways to spend time...

CoR set up some listening posts with patrol areas last Summer as instructed by their leader Salome (formerly known as Senator Kahina Loren of the Prism system) but she never said why. They are a fair way from the Exodus/Dynasty beacons/bases that have been recently found in FRift/Hawking's Gap/ Conflux areas of the galaxy & that are being discussed here. If you have not yet tried your hand at exploration then these missions are a way to start, but you'll need a ship with a good jump range so an Asp/DBE/Anaconda etc with a long-range jump engineered FSD is recommended.

Edit: Nobody has reported getting any clues from such missions, but it would be an appropriate way for FD to do things, so try it out & report back!

"Keep your eyes in the sky" to me says satellites. What witht them being eyes in the sky.
Which just brings me back to what I said on the previous page. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ERY-(Part-4)?p=5082456&viewfull=1#post5082456

Nah, it's going to be Thargoid glyphs for "Killed Roy was here" :D

So I just noticed something reading over all the logs that we have so far all of the events below happen on the same day, the hawkins gap delta and beta missions finish dropping off whatever they are carrying, and the formidine rift delta mission drops one of their beacon and they suddenly lose all ship power, along with the beta and gamma missions receiving some kind of signal. I can't help but thinking that all of these events are linked together. I'm guessing the alpha mission received the signal too but were too busy going space crazy to notice/log the information.

Formidine Rift Beta Mission 4/6
Expedition Log: 01/10/3270
"Picked up some kind of signal yesterday and it looks like the crew weren't expecting it. Got them proper rattled. There's definitely something very strange about this area of space. Won't be sad to turn around and head home.

FORMIDINE RIFT GAMMA MISSION 4/6
Expedition Log: 01/10/3270
We picked up some kind of bizarre signal yesterday. Whatever it was wasn't human. At least, that's the scuttlebutt going around the decks. Everyone is looking out of the canopies now. We're seeing some strange lights during hyperspace transits. Terror ? Yeah, we got some of that ...

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 4/6
Expedition Log: 01/10/3270
"Something weird happened today. Unloaded another beacon and set it up, then everything went offline - and I mean everything! Life support too! No comms, nothing. Stayed that way for about two minutes. Then everything was back to normal. Affected our support ship too. No idea what caused it. Going to need new underwear when I get back. Rumours are there is something odd about this area of space

HAWKIN'S GAP DELTA MISSION 4/4
Expedition Log: 01/10/3270
"Cargo is being deployed. A series of artefacts of some kind. The handling bods aren't part of the ship's crew, so we don't know what they're doing. Captain has told us to turn a blind eye and wait for them to be done."

Hawkin's Gap Beta Mission 4/4
Expedition Log: 1/10/3270
"Cargo dropped. Turned about and on our way back to civilisation. What it was, nobody knows and nobody is asking. It's a bit more relaxed now, whatever that cargo was it was something important. Can't see what use it would be this far out, but maybe someone knows something we don't...

I notice from FRift Delta 4/6 log that the life support also went down, so does that rule out interdiction by an AWBAAK ship? I think their interdictions do not affect life support system, but UP EMP blast does?

Could you explain those numbers? Because the do not make any sense to me.

In FE2 and FFE when the b2 hyperdrives were in use, a max range jump took 7 days(the clock jumped forward).

This means that if your ship had 9ly max range, 9ly would take a week. If you had 36ly max range, 36ly would take a week.

Jump half your range, it takes 3.5 days and so on. Quite simple actually.

Man! I missed that too. I must have taken that night off :)

I really, really need a REAL murder board. There is so much going on in Galnet that is linked together.

...and the latest now. Has anyone been out to COL 70 sector yet?
Im out COL 70 was just cruising around...Anything in particular to look out for ?

RI-B, SL-R, TW-U and UO-Z are all within the Heart and Soul nebula. Hmm...

EDIT: near sorry

Re posting this, because Drew confirmed that the Heart and Soul Nebula's are apart of the mystery... just saying! Now i'm not saying this is where the ELW we're looking for is, but these systems are worth a look, and again, taking a look at Delta log 2/6 gives you a pretty big hint!

Just to be clear, system's with ELW's around the two Nebula's are as follows:

EAFOTS RI-B D13-98
EAFOTS SL-R B33-1
EAFOTS TW-U C16-8
EAFOTS UO-Z D13-111

There are probably more, i will have a look.

So are we done for now and waiting for another content update from FD? Or is there actually still additional content to be discovered?

Specific questions for Drew:

- Are there more beacons in additional systems?
- Are there more outposts?
- Were these "rally point" outposts just staging areas for activity further out, or were they the endpoint of their expeditions?
- Are there more clues to find, or are we missing something in the existing clues (Galnet, books, logs, beacon data, etc.)?

I personally find it extremely discouraging to not know whether additional time spent exploring for clues is futile or not. And I think none of the mystery is lost when players are given guiding answers to questions like those above. Quite the opposite, in fact.

I personally think that for the most part, the expeditions we know about dropped the beacons and left. I don't think, from the evidence we have, that the expeditions went any further than they did.

But that doesn't mean we can't rule out expeditions that went out later on. If these colonies really are just rally points, it makes sense that they would be used as a pitstop of sorts for future missions.

It's worth a bit of thought, to see whether or not there are things further out, but it should be volunteer only. Asking people to head into possibly dangerous space with nothing more than a theory is a little much.

Nice find!

This is very interesting, very interesting indeed.

Any idea how these names came about?
.
From what I understand, the "correct" name is Hawking's Gap, named after Stephen Hawkings. But, when the in-game text appeared it said "Hawkins" instead, which was initially confusing. Drew Wagar said (somewhere, but I can't find it now) that he thought it was his fault -- that he submitted it with the wrong spelling, I guess.

Anyway, there's been quite some discussion on whether we should use the new Hawkins designation (because that's what the game uses currently in all the messages), or continue to use the original Hawkings.

Anyway, it appears to boil down to a typographic error and now we're stuck with it.

Edit: I found Drew's post: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...Formidine-Rift-(Part-3)?p=5027515#post5027515

The Donkey Kong of ED.

Z...

Just some more random thoughts from me, got stuck with a Real World Work deadline so my ED time is absolute zero at the moment.

But some thoughts.

1. Keep your eyes in the sky.

To me means either look for something unusual appearing either

a) From the planets sturace is there something that can be seen from all the bases?
b) whilst in supercruise, for example, when you dont have a discovery scanner fitted planets etc just appear as tiny dots floating round. Maybe there is something that the scanners cant detect and we have to manually approach it to see it?

I kinda like BitStorms idea about the satellites, my only reservation is we "cant keep them" so what are our eyes in the sky, well discovery scanners, normal scanners, we can keep checking for strange things in the contacts and navigation tabs. The new 15 minute timer for something to be spawned like a USS etc.
These are the tools we have had pretty much since the start, which gives confirmation that the mystery as has ben mentioned before can be solved without horizons, but having horizons may help.

So looking at it this way is there something which can be seen from all bases which point us to where our eyes should be looking as a help from "Horizons"

Just some more random thoughts, feel free to expand or pick apart.

Here is an updated timeline of events that I compiled.

August 21st 3270:

Hawkins Gap Alpha Mission 1/4

"Damn we've come a long way. I really should have looked at the galactic map before I signed up for this. Weeks of endless travel and hyperspace jumps just to get into the vicinity of the place, and that's before we get down to the work."

Formidine Rift Alpha Mission 1/6

"Why the hell are we out here? No one seems to know. It's taken months and still we're not there. Wherever 'there' is. We're dropping these beacons. Supposedly nobody knows what they're for. If they do they ain't telling. Makes no sense, there's nothing out there... and who would come all this way anyway?"

August 28th 3270:

Formidine Rift Alpha Mission 2/6

"We're still travelling. Jump drive malfunctioned today, that made an interesting diversion. It's going to take a while to fix. This area of space is g me out. Could have I heard some weird voices in the last jump. We are a long way from home. We're struggling to plot a course now, we're leaving the galactic arm and the jumps are getting longer."

August 30th 3270:

Hawkin's Gap Beta Mission 1/4

"Strange mission this, though the pay is good. Nobody seems to know who's footing the bill, but Sirius Corp is favourite. Whatever this trip is, it's expensive. It's also hush hush. Even the captain doesn't know what we're carrying and he's not happy about it."

Hawkin's Gap Delta Mission 1/4

"This is a bigger operation than I thought it was. A massive fleet of Anacondas all prepped for long endurance travel out to the edge of beyond. No ships have markings, no emblems, no political affiliation. Somebody with deep pockets must be paying for this, but who ?"

Hawkin's Gap Gamma Mission 1/4

"Beautiful part of the galaxy this, really dense clusters of stars, pretty much halfway to the core. Been one long trip though. We're out here dropping off a series of beacons. Randomius knows what for, but they're paying, so no questions asked!"

Conflux Beta Mission 2/4

"Signed on for this one as I had the exploration bug, but we're just jumping and jumping. We're not staying in systems to survey, just refueling as fast as we can and then it's back into witch-space. We're spending more time there than in real space. Someone is in a hurry."

Formidine Rift Beta Mission 1/6

"Been travelling for weeks. Passed this amazing twin nebula just recently, about the only interesting sight on this whole trip. We are a long way out now. I don't think anyone else has been this far. Still, pay is good!"

Formidine Rift Gamma Mission 1/6

Looks like I drew a short straw somewhere along the line. These long range missions pay well, but it's a year out in the void. A year ! We're out far beyond the frontier. The boys call this place the "Formidine Rift". Apparently that means "terror" in some old earth language. Nice. Just looks like more space to me.

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 1/6

"I should have paid a bit more attention to the mission description. I just saw the credit count and signed up there and then. More money than I've ever earned and all in one go, just for taking a year out. What's a poor girl got to do? A bit of jaunt into the void, how bad could it be? Didn't read the bit about several thousand light years. I've been past Leesti before! Get rich scheme - let's go!

September 7th 3270:

Formidine Rift Alpha Mission 3/6

"Finally fixed the drive, more monotony. Can't believe it's nearly six months sice we set out from Riedquat. Did I say Riedquat? I meant Reorte. It's getting to me, this endless emptiness. The guys are showing the strain. Three more months before we can turn and head back. The stars are thinning out, you can the whole galaxy just hanging there..."

September 12th 3270:

Hawkin's Gap Beta Mission 2/4

"Big bust up today. Apparently this ship is flying without shields and without guns! We had an escort for the first few hundred light years, but then they peeled off and we're on our own out here in the void! If we do come across anything nasty we're going to have to hope we can run..."

Hawkin's Gap Gamma Mission 2/4

"Funny Thing is, I've asked a few of the other hands about this mission and no one seems to know who's behind it. We all picked up bulletin board adverts promising big credits for a long haul and kind of just ended up on board. Not sure it it's the Feds, the Imps or the Alliance. Still, credits are credits!"

Hawkin's Gap Delta Mission 2/4

"Judging by the way the fleet deployed I would say there were three main destinations, all a long way outside of the core worlds. We got our orders today, we're making for a zone called "Hawkin's Gap". It's a seriously long way, not even the explorers have been out this way before. Strange mission."

Conflux Beta Mission 3/4

"Reminds me of what my father told me about witch-space. it's haunted. There's weird lights, shifting clouds, who knows what they are. Makes you wonder whether we should be out here at all. So much stuff we just don't understand."

Formidine Rift Beta Mission 2/6

"Stars have thinned out and we've started dropping our cargo. Looks like some kind of long-range beacon to me. It's all hush-hush, no questions asked stuff. Heard some of the senior bods talking about a Dynasty project. Careless talk and all that..."

Formidine Rift Gamma Mission 2/6

Finally arrived in place after five months of hyperspace travel. Now we have two months of laying a bunch of beacons before another five months travel back home. At least I'll have enough credits to retire by then.

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 2/6

"It's pretty out there, we've seen a gorgeous double nebula called Heart and Soul. You should see it, lots of bright blue stars nearby, wish we could divert to have a closer look, but our mission is beyond apparently. Really brings back how big the galaxy is. Make you feel real small and insignificant.

September 15th 3270:

Hawkin's Gap Alpha Mission 3/4

"Bored rigid now, can't wait to turn around and go home. I don't care how good the money is, nothing is worth this tedium. We haven't even started the return journey yet... Randomius Factoria - save me!"

September 18th 3270:

Hawkin's Gap Beta Mission 3/4

"Not a happy ship. Crew is grumbling. Captain hasn't been seen for weeks. Cargo bay is guarded by these very unfriendly types. Don't know what they're protecting, but it's enough to get a man killed over, that's for sure."

Hawkin's Gap Gamma Mission 3/4

"Arrived on site today. Bunch of guys had to go EVA to drop off the beacons. We're jumping around a bunch of systems here in the gap. One of the Beacons activated all on its own, started squawking some weird code before it got switched off. We were told we hadn't heard anything."

Hawkin's Gap Delta Mission 3/4

"Our little armada split up today, so we're on our own now. Just us and the void. Still a lot of speculations as to what we're doing. Cargo hold is full, that I don't know. My guess is some kind of deep space survey, but I can't figure out why we'd need to be so far out ..."

Conflux Beta Mission 4/4

"Witch-space is different out here, there's something odd, those lights we were seeing are less frequent now, but they seem to be hanging around, almost as if they're following us. Maybe I'm going nuts."

Formidine Rift Beta Mission 3/6

"Nothing prepared me for the boredom. It's very dark out here. Really dark... darker than normal space. There's hardly any stars ahead of us, it's just blackness... the void."

Formidine Rift Gamma Mission 3/6

Supposedly there are a bunch of other ships out here doing the same job as us, but no comms allowed. All a bit strange. it's vast and lonely out here, pretty much the whole galaxy is behind us. It's getting to some of the crew.

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 3/6

"My job is the EVA. Taking out one of out two Sidewinders and dropping beacons out in the void and then making sure they are activated. Not sure what these things are for. Who needs a beacon this far out anyway? Weird, they all have this code in their BIOS - 'Exodus'. Still, at least I now have something to do. The journey was so dull! Months of travel to get here.

September 22nd 3270:

Formidine Rift Alpha Mission 4/6

"The darkness grows. The galaxy is faint and dim behind us. I'm told this place has been nicknamed the Formidine Rift. Apparently that means fear in some old Earth language. It's an apt name, some of the guys are going space crazy out here in the void. We had to sedate one guy, he went completely doolally. We've not seen another soul for weeks. Just us and this ship... alone... in the darkness..."

October 1st 3270:

Hawkin's Gap Beta Mission 4/4

"Cargo dropped. Turned about and on our way back to civilisation. What it was, nobody knows and nobody is asking. It's a bit more relaxed now, whatever that cargo was it was something important. Can't see what use it would be this far out, but maybe someone knows something we don't..."

Hawkin's Gap Gamma Mission 4/4

"I'm logging this, but I shouldn't be. Bunch of guys were talking about the beacons yesterday and then there was a mysterious accident in the airlock - they're all dead! Feeling aboard is mutinous. Just want to get back home. I ain't doing no top secret missions again, that's for sure."

Formidine Rift Beta Mission 4/6

"Picked up some kind of signal yesterday and it looks like the crew weren't expecting it. Got them proper rattled. There's definitely something very strange about this area of space. Won't be sad to turn around and head home.

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 4/6

"Something weird happened today. Unloaded another beacon and set it up, then everything went offline - and I mean everything! Life support too! No comms, nothing. Stayed that way for about two minutes. Then everything was back to normal. Affected our support ship too. No idea what caused it. Going to need new underwear when I get back. October 7th 3270:

Formidine Rift Alpha Mission 5/6

"I'm scared... help me someone... I can't bear another jump. The lights in witch-space are coming for me. The lights... always the lights... they're calling to me... a siren song... I must join them..."

October 8th 3270:

Formidine Rift Alpha Mission 6/6

AUTOMATED TELEMETRY REPORT: CANOPY BLAST BOLTS ACTIVATED. LIFE SUPPORT MALFUNCTION. CREW VITAL SIGNS TERMINATED. SHIP SYSTEMS ENGAGING STANDBY MODE. DISTRESS BEACON ACTIVATED.

October 13th 3270:

Hawkins Gap Alpha Mission 4/4

"Still, it could be worse! I could have pulled the Formidine Rift gig. Rumour is they're having to double up on ships for that one as the crews are going void-mad and ejecting themselves into space because they've seen ghosts. Word is there's something out there."

November 11th 3270:

Formidine Rift Beta Mission 5/6

"Last batch of cargo due today, but the hyperdrive has malfunctioned. We tried jumping and got yanked straight back out. So we're stuck here, Randomius know where..."

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 5/6

"Oh my God ... someone help me. Where are they ... please ... this can't be happening.

Formidine Rift Gamma Mission 5/6

More strange lights. We've got equipment malfunctions, scanners dropping in and out, systems restarting. Ship is limping on. Everyone wants to turn about, but if we don't complete the mission we don't get paid. No one wants to give up those credits either. You expect to turn around and see ...

November 29th 3270:

Formidine Rift Beta Mission 6/6

"We can't fix it. Hyperdrive is dead. Lucky we're in a system with a habitable world. We've sent a distress call but who knows if anyone will here it. We're going to abandon ship. If anyone finds this, we're in..." AUTOMATED TELEMETRY REPORT: POWER FAILURE.

Formidine Rift Gamma Mission 6/6

We're done and we're heading home. We picked up some heat signature in the last system. Definitely something there and it wasn't any profile I had seen before. Something was watching us. There's something evil out here, and it doesn't like company!

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 6/6

"I've had time to accept it now. I went out as normal with one of the beacons, set it up. Had that weird power loss again. I waited and it all came back online like before. Signalled my support ship - no response. Flew back and it was gone, just debris. No survivors. Don't know what happened. It's just me and this crappy Sidewinder a zillion miles from home. Should have known it wasn't going to work out. If it's too good to be true.... There's an Earth-like world here, going to try and reach it ... you never know.
