The Formidine Rift - Part 2

Well said Bel, couldn't have wrote any better. Spot on with the whole analyses. As you know, you and I already deeply share the same beliefs and I can only conclude from all of your research and my own is that we simply cannot progress any further on our own, we can only wait until the story unfolds.

+1 virtual....

Edit: For Drew's eyes only... lol
I perfectly understand that this (Rift/Salomè) is a "new" thing being tried out and this is pretty much the test run. I greatly appreciate the story and the accompanying mystery. But for what it is worth, in future story mysteries they would flow a lot better if everything was in place and ready to go from the start so that the story flows, the mystery flows and can be solved at some point in time when most of the clues fall into place even if the story hasn't come full circle.

All of this I'm sure you already know quite well so this is more aimed at FD, I hope they are paying attention, because if the overwhelming positive reception from the playerbase is any indication at all, these types of mysteries is what we are craving!

All the best,

Arjin

Might be a bit gamey but in 2.1 we have unknown artifacts havign religious missions built around them ( spoiler perhaps).. Therefore one should look at all and catalogue all the therocratic governments and minor factions in the game

Do we have a central database of all religious orders in the elite universe. As stated the story will unfold, for now we should continue mapping around the rift and slowly expand the search from there as one avenue

I re-listened to Drew's radio interview and found myself if anything more in the wilderness. Drew had two basic points:

  1. Salome's story is likely more complicated than Girl sees clue, girl finds clue, masses follow girl to mystery spot
  2. We've missed things in Galnet

I've personally read every Kahina related galnet article many many 10s of times, pouring over potential meanings so I decided to start fresh yet again with the above factors in mind.

Salome's Story and It
Maybe early on Kahina is just being Kahina and not explicitly looking for It. Viewed in that light the Galnet posts take on a different tenor.
  1. In the first post she's sent to Sol by Blaine, not on her own. She doesn't want to be late but possibly not late for a meeting set up for her.
  2. Similarly in the second post (be nice to know which is correct date, 6th or 9th of March 3301), so maybe it's not the equinox and a coordinate but an intersection with another thread
  3. There's a fair bit going on in around then. A lot of civil unrest, particularly around Lugh and in the Empire. I've read all the surrounding articles though and came up empty-ish.
  4. Maybe she's initially embroiled in the Empire and Federation intrigue and that's what makes her throw in the towel (I really suspect it was Drew's frustration with PP).

So given the above possibly we're not looking for a clue to IT, we're looking for a clue to where to pick up the thread and follow. That just opens up a whole 'nuther can of worms because it could point back into the bubble and not out in the rift. If anything it increases the problem space, at least until somebody finds something and we're already floundering.

For what it's worth I've visited every system in book and in Kahina articles looking for missions or USSes, I've even panned around in the debug camera looking for grafitti clues scribbled on docking bay walls. Zip zilch nada.

Galnet Mysteries
In addition to the standard ones I've read and re-read every Galnet article posted within weeks of the canonical Kahina articles. I've poured over the canonical ones till I'm pretty sure I can type them from memory. I've run them through filters, I've counted commas, looked for keywords. Other than the EasterEgg a few weeks ago I never found anything.

If there's a hidden clue in them I have the following problem, who put them there ?

  • If it's Salome herself then that suggests she wants us to follow and the clue would be in what she says. I haven't seen a lot there.
  • If it's in the text then that suggests there's some external agency trying to send a message. If so what message and why. Is it the Dark Wheel ? if I don't know the point of the message I don't know what to look for. Coordinates have a pattern, word messages have a different one. If it's some double layer thing like find the letters then run them through a cipher then good luck without a major hint (see eb,p)
  • If it's just Drew putting in clues as author then all bets are off. They could be of any form and I have no way of guessing the intent or the agency and therefore I have no way to tell if the pattern I see is a clue or just random characters.

On a side note it's particularly annoying that system galnet messages only go back to October 6th 3301. Any clue that was hidden in a local system news feed is now long gone.

So after spending yet more time mulling over all of that, following up on a few leads I've come to two conclusions.
  1. I find it interesting that 2 days before the first Kahina article Jaques made a grand return to the bubble. Now, once things are spinning up, he's returned as a point of focus after a hiatus that mysteriously overlaps Salome's. If there's a connection then it's potentially as much a real world one as an in game one (e.g. Jaques is also somehow a Drew Agent)
  2. I have squat. After all the above I have more questions than answers.

Certainly all the major powers and all the other books are hinting that somethings out there and something's coming. The major books all set the stage for some major conflict with an external entity. It's been building up all year with both the Empire and Feds building big new ships and now the Engineers. So quite possibly the ship has sailed (or is in the dock and weighing anchor in about 3 to 4 weeks) and we'll just have to hop on and sail away with it. More simply we just have to wait for new clues because the chance of getting ahead of the story is now gone.

What I find most frustrating about the whole thing is it's like the BGS. I can't tell when a false trail is simply because there's a bug and the mission isn't triggering or galnet borked up a post or whether I'm just wrong. I do know that those bloody Diamond-Eye missions don't spawn a lot of the time and when they do spawn they don't complete properly 90% of the time.

Edit: In no way shape or form should the above post be viewed as negative commentary. I love this mystery, it's my way of trying to break the pattern we're currently in (and have been in) and possibly grasp at some straws.

Belthize, thank you for posting that most excellent summary of how you see the situation. I'm of the same opinion that up till now any clues or what have you have been too esoteric or vague to lead to any sort of real clue as to how to go about solving this mystery.

Again, as Arjin has said, I think we will have to wait until the story unfolds before any real progress can be made.

Lastly, as with the Easter Egg of a week or so ago we have a better grasp as to how Drew operates, the sneaky so-and-so :) - perhaps reading past Galnet articles (haven't had the time as yet) to see if sentences can be spotted which are somehow odd looking a la the recent one, might be a way to go. I'll be having a look at those soon.

Hey. Haven't checked in here for a while, but I've decided to head out into the black for the first time ever, to join the search. Was wondering if anyone has looked into the "pointer" stars in the NGC 7822 Nebula. Having come 1.5kLy out, they are immediately super obvious and stand out so much from everything else. I was originally going to head to H&S nebulas, but I think I'l replot my course for NGC 7822, though if someone else has already looked into it then idk... Keep up the tinfoiling guys :D

I can't quite let go of the Greasian Liquor.

I fund this quote about Geras (Old age) being an entrance to the underworld:
'Geras is Old Age, a child of Nyx (Night), or of Erebus (Darkness of the Underworld) and Nyx. Geras may be seen at the entrance of the Underworld where the abode of Grief, Anxiety, and Diseases is. Also Fear, Hunger, Death, Agony, and Hypnos dwell in this place, where the Elm with the clinging False Dreams stands.'

I don't think it's fair to hold much of this against frontier - this story was derailed thanks to player actions. (not that I think you are, just saying for clarity)

They'll get it going again and will have learnt from the experience, it is a new form of storytelling and that comes with new vulnerabilities.

Much as I'd love to find it I want to know more too so for the moment I guess we'll sip our drinks, make smalltalk and make ready.

Whatcha mean pointer stars?

I'm in that area on my way back, say hi if you see a mystery empty square

There is a kind of line (more like a set of scattered points, but they do follow a trend line pretty closely. They also point in the direction of where we think the rift is. Perhaps someone could plot them 3 dimensionally and calculate a trend line from that? Would be nice to see exactly where they point as the RR line seems to just dead end without passing through anything of particular interest to us.

Ah I get you - that is a Frontier based mistake.

All the open star clusters in the game are rendered oddly. rather than all the stars being a sphere(ish) they're in long sausages pointing away from SOL. The entirety of this star cluster should be within the nebula.

Kinda hoping one day they fix it as it does look pretty strange

Who said it was a mistake? Perhaps they simply messed with all the other ones in order to hide the anomaly in thiis one? *Tinfoiling intensifies*

I think you may be reading too much into the RR line. It points to the Rift, which we must cross. This we have found.

We now need to solve the next clues, not re-grind that one - save your poor braincells.

There was a youtube vid explaining the how and whys of the galaxy map may have been called history or creation of the galaxy map, was a while ago may have been an Obsidian Ant one.
but it was said on there that position data is not brilliantly accurate when you get out to 100ly's and that clusters and some other thigs become smeard and position data is fudged that's why we get these long streaks of the same types of stars, where they should be a cluster.

Oh I'm fully aware that the RR line is only a general pointer, which is why I am considering the posibility that this nebula is a more specific one...

Also yeah, seems like an artifact of floating point math - probably due to the fact that the game was only released in 32bit and so the galaxy was generated with that in mind... idk, I'm not super knowledgeable about this kind of stuff.

We've missed things in Galnet

To confound things further, there is nothing that says the things we have missed refer to, or indeed have anything to do with Kahina. If someone is trying to warn us about dangers, without exposing themselves, it could be hidden in anything: An uprising in a given system, an accident in another, Onion head being pushed somewhere else. There could be all sorts of hints that would otherwise be totally missed unless viewed with a specific point of view, or context.

If this is the case it would require a thorough, and careful re-reading of all Galnet articles from the context of looking for warnings and hidden meanings. That would be a very large undertaking and would no doubt require a number of people working in collaboration. Maybe even a dedicated thread where each news item is posted up and analysed.

It would also mean this is a very carefully planned story line and very well hidden. However I will be pleased if this is the case. Too often things are made too easy. If FDEV have taken the decision and gone to the effort to weave a mystery of Da Vinci Code proportions into the game, knowing full well it could be completely wasted effort then hats off to them. And I hope they don't start making it easy by dropping hints and clues, other than to hint that it exists at all.

EDIT: What about this person who keeps setting treasure hunts? Why? What if they are trying to point us at something and hiding it in the guise of some eccentric's game? It might be worth looking at the clues and locations used in each treasure hunt.

Nah mate it's all fine - you're reading too much into that one.

What star type are they?

The NGC 7822 contains a string of systems starting S171 and each system consists of a primary O class star and multiple other bodies (including black holes) the entire set of S171 (roughly 40 systems total) nets a good sum of credits.
As far as I can tell the entire nebula has been thoroughly explored. This is where I found the hmc planet with 223Gs

I happened to take a picture last night which includes those stars at NGC 7822 - top left hand corner...

I don't recall Drew saying anything about a wolf already or not. However, the Prism system's planets are all named after member of the family of Autolycus. Oddly, Autolycus is missing from the system and his name means "The Wolf Himself". I believe the subject was covered thoroughly in the 1st Formidine Rift thread.

For what it's worth, Drew originally wanted to use the Wolf 630 system as a location, but 'Frontier had other plans'. Whatever that may mean. And so he got to design the Prism system instead.
