The Formidine Rift - Part 2

so once we get there, where is a good basecamp system to use as a branch out to map the area we roughly consider wroth mapping

What we/you need is a proper base camp...

When FDEV opened up to player submissions for Community Goals, we (SMAC) submitted a three part goal to build an Exploration Support Outpost deep down the Orion Spur. The idea was there are be two resource gathering CGs followed by an exploration one. The more data that was gathered, the further away the Outpost would be. However FDEV dropped a Bounty Hunting CG in our home system of Morrina and then followed it up a few weeks ago with the SMAC CG to counter the damage done to our minor faction in the first CG, so it is unlikely they will do anymore Morrina/SMAC CGs any time soon...

So I was thinking of approaching the Canonn and CoR to put forward a join CG supported by all three factions (Canonn, Children of Raxxla and Spinward Marches Alliance Concern), to make such a Outpost or even a series of Outposts towards the Rift. Then it might have a bit more weight.

so is wolf 630 in the game as a scannable locaiton ?
Try on Galmap, you may need to check if it has alternate names.

As to basecamps it depends on where you want to survey. Qohen's Ketchup Basecamp is at Pha Aeb KB-W c15-0 and has all the basic jumpo mats if you want to try and survey around there, or there's the vastness beyond which has less well defined but all potentially the target

Really hope they go down this route. It'll lend a nice life to this search and area even if some only experience it as supply run missions - get them out as far as this wayfarer's graveyard at least to feel the freaky

I thought cannon and COR got behind the pioneers collective CG which has been punted out a few months for powerplay games

That said maybe has it been considered that once youre elite then selling more exploration data in the founders world might be a trigger for something later on fi a critical mass of exploration data is donated - its something im working on now once i get elite i will attempt to gather a few more thousand data bits - perhaps there are hidden background sim / server events planned if enough work is done in that area. Regardless of the faction in charge of the Founders world

I mean such plans would be longer term if any group has considered crossing those Ts off

The NGC 7822 contains a string of systems starting S171 and each system consists of a primary O class star and multiple other bodies (including black holes) the entire set of S171 (roughly 40 systems total) nets a good sum of credits.
As far as I can tell the entire nebula has been thoroughly explored. This is where I found the hmc planet with 223Gs

Looking down the line just now(ish)

It's a feature all by itself, a lighthouse on the way to the rift perhaps but nothing else

... I find it interesting that 2 days before the first Kahina article Jaques made a grand return to the bubble. Now, once things are spinning up, he's returned as a point of focus after a hiatus that mysteriously overlaps Salome's. If there's a connection then it's potentially as much a real world one as an in game one (e.g. Jaques is also somehow a Drew Agent) ...

That is interesting. Way back I made the suggestion of convincing Frontier to create a CG to allow us to move Jaques closer to the Rift ... maybe to NGC 7922 or Heart and Soul. Drew gave me a Rep for the post which I just assumed was because he thought it was a good idea. I submitted the CG idea a couple of months ago to Frontier but never heard back. Apparently the Fuel Rats have more influence with Frontier then I do. Their attempt to move Jaques to Beagle Point looks to be on the edge of failure. With 2 hours and 45 minutes to go they are still three tiers away from completing the CG. Not enough fuel to make it to Beagle ... but certainly jumping to Heart & Soul would still be 'within reach'.

I don't have an inside track to Frontier to make the suggestion though :(

I searched that entire system and didn't see that HMC world. Care to share so I can visit if you remember?

Nice opportunity grasped, Jaiotu.

Regarding the line of stars in open clusters.....

An astrophysics friend of mine explained thst a lot of ED stellar information is taken from star catalogues, created by star surveys.

These surveys are often a detailed study of a narrow spot of the night sky (from Earth) where everything in the field of view is measured and catalogued. This means we keep coming across these clusters of loose lines that point back to Sol. I believe 2mass was one of these survey sets - I have found at least 3 2mass open star cluster lines a few thousand k from Sol.

I can't quite let go of the Greasian Liquor.

I fund this quote about Geras (Old age) being an entrance to the underworld:
'Geras is Old Age, a child of Nyx (Night), or of Erebus (Darkness of the Underworld) and Nyx. Geras may be seen at the entrance of the Underworld where the abode of Grief, Anxiety, and Diseases is. Also Fear, Hunger, Death, Agony, and Hypnos dwell in this place, where the Elm with the clinging False Dreams stands.'

I followed that line of thought, trucking Gerasian Gueuze Beer all over the Bubble, including through Nyx system (although I didn't sell it there) to no discernible effect.

To confound things further, there is nothing that says the things we have missed refer to, or indeed have anything to do with Kahina. If someone is trying to warn us about dangers, without exposing themselves, it could be hidden in anything: An uprising in a given system, an accident in another, Onion head being pushed somewhere else. There could be all sorts of hints that would otherwise be totally missed unless viewed with a specific point of view, or context.

Honestly, the Fed and Imp arms race seems related to all this as well. I mean, isn't Salome basically saying the same thing that people need to arm themselves before heading out looking in the rift?

Oh well. We can at least assume that Kahina was drunk when she arrived in Persephone on April 2, last year. She didn't have a lot of time to 'drink it all' before she got there.:D

I ran every rare with even a vague reference to Greek mythology into Persephone station - nada.

That said, does anyone know if the game plays a kind of tune every time you get to the end of a plotted journey, or is the tune more random?
Just something I noticed but didn't have time to investigate last night.

Random side note. I played around with rares some too. My most tinfoil-ery one involved floating out of super cruise. You can *hear* the galactic core and human space when drifiting so I was trying to see if I could hear other civilizations.

Tauri Chimes have this description: These hand crafted wind chimes are specially tuned to stimulate a variety of spiritual and physical responses. They are known for helping people find inner peace, or direction, and are guaranteed to keep your chakras aligned.

So I had a go with those in my hold. I of course found nothing but did I find nothing because:
  • It's a stupid idea
  • I was in the wrong place
  • I was pointed the wrong way
  • I didn't recognize that there was a new sound
  • It's the right thing to do but bugged because nobody ever tried it and reported it.

I spent a lot of time drifting in the rift tracking sounds, never found squat. In the end I patted myself on the back for thinking outside the box and sold them at a profit.

edit: added 5th plausible explanation.

Theory formed - tests defined and put into practise - great science :D still sounds like a tempting answer too

I like to imagine that Drew is reading this thread, looking at our tinfoil ideas and thinking "Damn! That's WAY cooler than what I came up with!" :D
