So - I got this far... and had to turn back
Namely, the stars started to run out - to the point where it was still possible to go further (I reckon I could have managed another 100ly-200ly maybe. - however doing so means a great deal of backtracking and circuitous routes - as the place is a nest of blind dead end alleys.
Also the route tracker does now work, as routes involve doubling back.
This was really illustrated when I looked to navigate back, and:
- the route plotter is no help, as it can't handle doubling back
- the route back also looked like a nest of blind alleys - literally you could not see which the right route, that does not lead into a starfield cul the sack.
Frankly - had I not had EDDiscovery running, capturing every single jump - I suspect I would be stuck and 'lost there', until I decided to self destruct, as the place is a maze.
Anyway.. plotting my way back now (jump-by-jump) using EDDiscovery.
Will probably try and head for the 'formadine bridge' to get across to the other side, or have another go a going forwards into the rift, this time with a little more confidence (having demonstrated to myself that I can go in,and come back out again, and that the EDDiscovery tools do actually work!)
Must confess- hadn't realised how far into the maze I'd gone until I started to struggling to go forwards, and took a look back, and realised without help, there was no chance I'd be able to find my way out again...
