Target mid-range, and scale up and down as appropriate.

The GFX capabilities required by E: D shouldn't be that high. CPU and networking, yes.

How am I going to feel superior if any old PC can play it? That's what I want to know?
I paid good money to feel superior to you lesser mortals, what about my rights?
I demand that it can only be played on overclocked high end rigs (normal high end rigs need not apply) to boost my ego!
In fact the minimum specs should include things that aren't even invented yet!!!

I'll be using a passive 512MB 9600GT. So that is pretty low-middle these days, but it does all the games i play just fine (the latest one being CKII), and it has no trouble in X3 and all the other space games i have played.

E: D is not going to be as hardware obsessed as Star Citizen, so in that respect i think it will scale much better on modest hardware, which will be one of it's trump cards vs SC i suspect, more people will be able to run it with acceptable performance.

Also i think E: D should take a leaf out of Josh's book (Limit Theory) in terms of hardware requirements.

Nearly all of Star Citizens high end specs are down to the expensive (memory) cost of the hand created super hi-res textures that the new Cryo engine will be using.

If you are mostly using computer generated algorithms (as in Limit Theory) you can get decent enough looks at a much cheaper cost (hardware wise).

The devs have already said that they want E: D to be as ground breaking as the original Elite was.

That's good enough for me.

I think it should be targeted between high and Low end Graphics. So it Affects more people:). Let the people on high end have fun and let the low end computer be able to play it.

Hate to say it tricky I think your topic might cause more (epeen wars) then the other tread.

Also More Hardware tread are proving my point. We need a hardware forum. So it can talk about Graphics card, PC, 32 bit 64 bit and so on.

Read the OP and my second post. Even if it does end up as an epeen war it has served it's purpose. To get the community to talk/flame. ;)

You mean... the Raspberry i?

Hopefully the graphical settings will be capable of scaling from low-poly count at 800x480/600 to high-poly count with all bells, whistles, tassels and bling at 2560 x 1440.

Awaiting the alpha patiently to see how current hardware performs - hopefully the alpha will contain a debug mode logging framerates, etc over a session to be able to feed real world performance information back to Frontier for tuning purposes.

Target high-end, provide scaling to accommodate low-end.

Absolutely spot on there DigitalDuck!

Although I hope they take it a little further by making the game struggle when 'maxed out' on the fastest graphics cards. This will make the games visuals future proof to some extent.

For Star Citizen they suggest a minimum of a Nvidia 460GTX or ATI equivalent. The 460 GTX was released is 2010 and was about 200-250 new (US) at the time. You can now buy one on Amazon for $125 (US).

I think that is a fair starting point for a graphic card, and some new models are faster and same price range. They used the 460 as been out for awhile and it was at the time the best card for the money.

So high end? Not even close to a high end card anymore but the one Star Citizen is suggesting for the minimum card. I don't think that is a bad starting point for Elite Dangerous to suggest as a card to play with some of the eye candy and other features turned on. It will be a 4 year old card by the release date and they to start somewhere with a suggested card.

That would be a good choice. Not overly expensive, and better cards are at the same price or even less by the release date. As the 460 is no longer made the price of it will only go higher as stock runs out, but newer cards will be faster and cheaper. The 500 series such as a gtx 560SE is only $90 US (faster then the 460gtx for less money, so there are deals to be found). So look for good cards a generation or 2 old if can't afford a lot and just upgrading an old PC. Just realize your CPU may not be fast enough to drive the card to full potential, but it will still be better.

I believe the devs have already said the game will be using direct x 11.1* so the game is going to be high end gfx wise.

The best games have loads of different options to cater for most graphics cards, and I hope E:d will be compatible with eyefinity, and other non standard resolutions without the need for any 3rd party hacks.

I might be wrong about the directx 11, thought I read it in one of the devs comments on the kickstarter page but i cant find it now.

Based on the gaps between previous release dates, there will probably be a new Direct X before ED is released, so a whole new batch of graphics cards will be needed (Although I can't find out anything about what will be in DirectX 12).

Given there will be people wanting to playing ED on everything from a work laptop (poor graphics card, low memory, slow harddisk, etc) to very high end desktop, Frontier need to be able to do something very scalable but with out giving one group much of an unfair advantage.

DX12 will be a XBox One at first and then appear 9 months later on Windows 8 Attempt 2. I also expect a cynical "Not for Win7" to force people to upgrade.

There also has to be a reasonable low point at which point the user will be forced to upgrade or abandon the idea of playing ED.

Personally I would prefer FD to create the game for the top end of the market with the ability to scale back to a certain degree (cater for say 70% of the player base) - why ? It's likely that we will all be playing ED for years to come and over time as the hardware market improves ED will get better and better for the majority of players (as they upgrade their hardware) .. like good wine you want it to improve with age not become worse. (Which was what happened to Elite - great in it's day but for me lost it within a couple of years)

It shouldn't needlessly stress GPUs when a good bit of art direction or a clever algorithm could do a better job. Increased poly count does not equal increased LOD, and the general aim should be to get the highest LOD for the least effort.

That said, it's a twitch-based game, and I really want it to look pretty. If that rules out work laptops, then so be it. Gamers have gaming rigs, and I'm not sure that a mythical portion of the market exists, where they're going to commit themselves to playing a space game with twitch elements for three plus years. Possibly there's a few thousand like that, but the millions of others will expect the game to look modern.

But yeah, don't aim it at Titan plus, or anything stupid like that.

New Graphics Card thoughts

Pondering a new graphics card as one I have getting a little long in the tooth (see sig below). Was thinking of getting the GTX 760 as a replacement but slightly concerned it will be too power hungry for current set up! My current PSU is Corsair 620w and thats about 6 years old at this stage. Any thoughts - can I get away with this new GC?

I'd run your system config through the corsair psu finder or similar to see if you would need a new psu before buying anything, it really depends on what you want to do with your old card.

if your taking the old card out you may get away with it but if you are just shuffling it over a few slots to make room for the replacement then I would say more power will definitely be required.
