I have the Cyborg X52 Pro HOTAS with rudders (not sure how useful that will be in ED, tbh).
What I'd like to see, though is some comparisons from people who've used multiple controllers and get a feel for which ones work best, or combinations thereof.
Any chance the devs might mention what they favour or what they use for testing?

I've been looking at this for years for mechwarrior games:

Saitek X65-F

It's build quality is supposed to be unrivaled, the Thrustmaster HOTAS WARTHOG however I've read comes close.

complete set would be the X65-F with HMD such as Oculus Rift for head tracking.
Imagine, almost full FOV, hands on Throttle and Stick, enough controls at your fingertips for combat, Head tracking to look around your ship without 'clunky' look back, left, right keys. Still use mouse for commerce however.

I have an MSFFB2 and CH Fighterstick and Throttle.
I prefer the MSFFB2 (Microsoft force feedback 2) tbh and this is the stick i will be using along with TrackIR hopefully.

I can't see myself ever going back to a joystick. Owning a Razer Naga Epic and having got used to the thumbpad I'm pretty sure that re-training myself to use a stick would be such a ball-ache.

I don't think I've used a joystick since the Speccy days if I'm honest.

I've gone through quite a few joysticks in my gaming history.
About 4 or 5 months back my trusty Logitech Extreme 3D Pro died on me (it developed a persistent drift which no amount of software correction and dead-zone manipulation could satisfactorily counter).

So I decided to treat myself and bought a Saitek X52 Pro HOTAS Joystick/Thruster combo and my word is good!
The re-centering spring could be a little stronger, but this is a minor gripe and one soon forgotten by the sheer joy this fantastically constructed piece of kit brings.

In my day we played Elite on the BBC Micro with these babies: http://wouter.bbcmicro.net/pictures/hardware/bbc_joysticks/index.html
Those look horrendous!

This looks really good. And about £150 cheaper than the Thrustmaster kit.

Here's a comparison on SimHQ.

Can anyone here actually use either one of these beasts care to comment? The main difference I see is that the Thrustmaster stick moves using digital hall effect sensors on the stick and throttle. The Saitek doesn't move and instead uses force sensing. Not that hokey Jedi stuff though. The harder you push on the stick the more you move so I am guessing this one needs to be bolted down.

On the purely aesthetic front I think the Thrustmaster looks better and I just love those physical flip switches on the throttle.

I use CH Pro' CombatStick and CH Pro' Pedals (Track IR too!)

Much better than mouse for most actual sims, the mouse can still be assigned for other control options as well as keyboard, these things aren't mutually exclusive in most proper sims as you get to fully customise your control layouts.

Once you try something like TrackIR in Rise of Flight or Cliffs of Dover etc, your cockpit is never overwhelming again from a control point of view.

It is worth considering using a joystick mount for comfortable longterm control

I'm a lefty too. I use a Thrustmaster 16000 as well. Fully configurable and completely ambidextrous. I've been using with Oolite on my Dell Inspiron and it's brilliant. At a little over £40 the cost vs. capability ratio is perfect for me, and it got me to Dangerous (512 kills IIRC) in about 10 days.

The main trigger switch feels very solid. The lesser switches feel slightly oddly positioned (not a problem to use though and work perfectly well). The throttle is pretty good (the slider throw is a little short for my personal taste but it works very smoothly and is very good in a combat situation). I play with quite a light touch, and can see this one lasting a long time

I have a logitech Freedom 2.4 wireless stick. It's not force feedback, but I like it.

It has pitch, roll, yaw, throttle, 10 buttons (trigger, thumb trigger, 4 on the top and 4 on the base) and an 8-way hat.

I like the look of the X52 and the Warthog et al - but A) they are overkill and B) I can't afford them.

I've never even heard of wireless sticks before.

Which is actually a lie now that I think about it as I had one for my Spectrum. From memory it was IR possibly and looked a bit like a Star Trek phaser. It didn't have a moving stick but an smooth 8 way area that was touch sensitive, a little like the original iPods.

EDIT: Just found what looks like what I had, again it was a long time ago.

The only images available for it on Google all seem to point to this Ebay auction.
