Op, I have been pooting off chunks of roids for days now just seeing what is there and I have some potential bad news. I'm hardly seeing any metal in metal rich or metallic. No palladium anywhere I look and I've never seen platinum at all... ever! It's starting to smell like mining may have got a nerf. of course it may also be I am having lots of luck... the bad kind.

Palladium is still out there, check the Pristine Reserves Metallic asteroids...you should find Palladium and Platinum there at 20% to 36%+ purity...

HIP103107 about 18% to 55% per good roid
never say i didn't share

From my experiences mining which takes up alot of my playtime in elite other then exploring, to get the platinum group metals(palladium, platinum, ect) your looking for a pristine OR major reserves metallic asteroid field around a G to K class star.
Different stars seem to change the composition of asteroid clusters, red dwarfs usually giving uranite as their top metal/mineral, Brown Y or T classes tend to be rutile but i haven't mined much in them, if the roid clusters are left over accretion discs from the stars development it makes sense for the compositions to change.

When you get into the system pick any cluster in the belt you want say cluster 1, have a taste of the field (usually i test most of the roids unless its a large cluster, 10+ roids then i go nuts in the same cluster because your mostly guaranteed a good haul with a huge field) If you don't find the type of metal you want migrate to cluster 2 and taste again. Each cluster has a slightly different density of metals sometimes only one of the 7 or so clusters will have platinum group metals.

After that if you haven't found any
MOVE ON TO ANOTHER SYSTEM

I can't stress that enough if you've had no luck in a pristine metallic field for the last 20 minutes and have checked multiple clusters then the field probably does not contain the metals your looking for, Also if there are NPC;s about use them as mobile prospectors, as your going past to your choice of roid check what they have chipped off before they can scoop it up. It makes tasting a field easier and faster.
Oh and leave the poor NPC miners alone, if they're mining "your" roid remember you both have a "quota" of chunks per roid which won't change no matter how many miners there are on the roid at the time!

That's exactly what I have been doing. It's been days now since I found palladium, much less platinum, gold, silver, and there seems to be little or no variation between metal rich/metallic and pristine/major reserves. The output % on the chunks is pretty much the same between then as well as the mix of resources. Those are all newly surveyed locations. Again, I may just be unlucky... happens to me often.

Or someone may be making a subtle suggestion to go do something else... Well, guess I will go do something else then!

Mining Claims Query - Finders Keepers?

Regards lucrative mining am I right in thinking that if I discover (using the scanner) a metal rich mining cluster or belt, that I ought not sell that data to the Universal Cartographic dept for a few credits?

I assume when using the galaxy map and I see the option to purchase mapping data for a system I havn't visited yet, I only have that option because some Cmdr Explorer has sold it to the Universal Cartography dept for all and sundry to see and plunder?

Is Mining Broke?

Trying to mine and when I try to refine I'm getting a warning saying Unknown Error. Cannot communicate with server.

Not sure if its some kind of bug, a server issue or maybe the ship equipment. Maybe buying a dodgy refinery or ship wear and tear or something.

Anybody else getting this problem?

I figured it out, it looks like a bug.

If you sell your refinery while it still has partial rocks in it, then you buy another refinery later its still has the old rocks in it even though you cant see it, which stops you from refining more.

If you reloaded they reappear and you can then vent them and its back to normal.

So does anyone mine at all... ???

I mean seriously, how can someone enjoy this... I fitted my Type 6 today for mining the 1st time ever since I play ED to see if there is any money to be had after FD fixed the exploit of early Gamma.
Maybe I´m doing something totally wrong but the best I could find was Silver, Bert & Indite. After more then 2 hours I came out with abit over 50k including a 7k bounty from an AI attacking me while munching on them rocks... thats it ?
Do I miss something or is the mesmerizing sound of the mining lazer that most exciting part of it ? Please share your wisdom...

It's like everything else that has been nerfed. Missions, commodities, mining. With each new iteration of patches, it is getting harder and harder to stay interested. There are plenty of money sinks, but no way of making meaningful income.

Before the patches I was able to find roids that had gold, platinum, palladium. And I still find them from time to time.. But when I do it is no longer 30% yields of them.. It is 6 - 8% yields.. Where once I could get 3 chips to make one ingot. It now takes 12 or more and the irony is the roids only provide 10 chips. So after depleting the roid your sitting with a refinery that has 97%... and good luck finding that one roid of the same type to put you over the top for "one ingot"
And all this is in a roid field marked as Metal with Pristine amounts.. o_O

In my opinion they should at least make it so the "primary Ore" is always at least 30 - 50% and the secondary could be a lesser amount such as 6%.. but to have two types of ore and both be at 6%.. is simply a waste of effort, and as you can imagine Mining for 2 hours for 50k is but one example. Last night I mined for 6 Hours straight. Cash out was 132k ... in 6 hours....

Elite - Grind Fest

Funny how the trailer doesn't show this part...

The only way i like making money is by doing missions and im struggling to get couple of hundred k cr while some players have millions and millions, its just like real life.

Mining and Trading Status

Does mining (then selling to a station/system) increase trading status, as well as increasing your standing with the system/faction etc.?

It's so cool now to have things green, the stations, npc's etc....

Make sue you only mine at 'Metallic' sites and not 'Metal Rich' - that way you have a fair chance of finding Palladium, Platinum and Gold. I've had a few recently at 20-30% and one even of 20% Palladium and 20% Gold. Don't bother with anything else (unless it's the secondary ore in the roid). With my 16t hold in my Cobra I was able to secure 750,000Cr over a couple of evenings.

Off exploring now though

Guys, we were testing the game. Its only natural to give testers ability to progress much faster than the paste of the "real" game. Things are not "broken" now, they were buffed for the testing purposes.

Be thankful there was no wipe.

What's the difference between Metallic and Metal Rich? I would have thought the Metal Rich would have been better?.... We so need a user manual/guide.

Yes I mined all day today

Hi guys. I've been mining today in a Cobra with 40T space & 4 bin Refinery. I found a Ring planet with unlabelled Ring type, but its clearly Metallic as I am getting loads of Gold, Plat, Pallad and Silver. Thats all I've been collecting, sometimes they were 50% sized chunks but quite rare. I'd say 4 hours got me 500K but i'm quite new so still a bit rubbish at scooping.
Upgrading the Power Dist really helped and in combat too.
