Good Idea?

I have to admit I tend to give rings a miss at the moment, I've not found any to my liking - which is to say metallic. Metal rich doesn't seem to be so profitable. If I find some metallic ones I'll give it a go though :)
When I have gone to the rings in the past I have tended to just dropped in randomly to mine.
I go to the extraction sites to bounty hunt :)

Cool, out of interest whats your mining system?
.
Mine in KATAWANA or something, and I find the opposite, metal rich rather than metallic...haha go figure, strange, I suppose as long as the resource is pristine or major reserves, it shouldn't make much of a difference.

I'm in Tatil at the moment. There's a good mix of things in the system. The reserves are listed as Major but I'd say they are behaving more like minor reserves at this point - perhaps lots of local interest has caused things to downgrade? Hmm..

Aside; I've not got around to mining yet, but can a mining laser also be used offensively? If so, what is it on par with? The starting pulse lasers?

Thanks, ill take a look when im home......
.
The system im in says major reserves, and it feel like it too gold plat palad everywhere, but pirate activity is also rife here (npc wise)

Luck seems to play a big part. I've been mining maybe 100ly away from the starting system, and I have yet to see a pirate in the belts, NPC or player. Lots of cops, and the occasional NPC miner - hell, I even saw a commander yesterday! But no pirates.

On a related note: finally found a proper ring last night, after mining those annoying clusters for a while, and damn did that thing slow my computer down! From framerates in the high 30's and 40's everywhere, down to 10-15 in the middle of the field! But it was worth it, to be able to fly ANY direction and find literally thousands of metallic 'roids.

I finally found a metallic ring. Not pristine, but close. My problem is that I can only drop into the ring at the designated "cluster" points, when I'm just flying around outside the instances, the ring doesn't seem to exist... This is a ring like the one in our solar system, some distance away from the star, not the usual 5-10 roid clusters, but a proper ring once you're in it - there just doesn't seem to be a way to GET into it except by using the designated entry points, which seems a little off to me...

I have been doing minig exclusively since tuesday and I agree that mining is a very fun activity with the ocasionally popping up pirates. Its a mix of combat, "exploring", scooping, and the excitement of "what composition that next rock would be?" :)

You mentioned clusters but I suggest you to find a planet ring instead its much more interesting to search after valuable material composition in the ocean of rocks and fighting pirates there.

What you have found is not a ring, rings are at the planets not at the stars. Try to find a planet with metallic ring, clusters are good if you have short range and you can't explore other systems with planets with nice metallic rings but if you can than go to explore because that few rock around stars is very boring to mine compared to planet rings.

Well, time has shown that there WAS a tweak to be made to Trading and posters who denied that anything had changed were simply uninformed.

Congratulations to the people who had the courage to state the obvious despite contrary attacks from the unaware.

I have to agree i enjoyed Elite in Beta but now its live trading prices are terrible, mission don't pay much and when mining, the expensive ore disappears quickly.....
It seems hard to make good money...I'm going to take a break for a while as its frustrating me....

I've stopped playing trading Elite until the prices hopefully improve.

Consider this, I have a Type 6 that now only earns $144000 an hour playing non-stop.

To get a Type 7 I would have to trade nonstop 6 hours a day for THREE WEEKS if the prices stay the same, which they wont.

Then my new Type 7 would only hold a few tons more than my previous ride.

Mining is nerfed too it now only pays 3-5% per scoop meaning 20-30 "scoops' to make a ton of something that is only worth a few thousand credits takes forever and mining is so boring.

Contracts on the Bulletin board pay peanuts too and most require you to sell your cargo ship and buy a fighter.

Right now a Type9 will take you over 6 hours a day nonstop play for OVER a year and a half!!

Somebody made a mistake and now the incentive to play is gone.

All I can say is you are doing it wrong.

You are mining in a low or common reserve asteroid belt. You need a major reserves or pristine belt to mine in.

The trade prices were changing fast last night as the commodities market fix took effect, within an hour I saw huge fluctuations as trade routes changed within an hour and then settle down once more. Even made a really nice run of imperial slaves which netted me 400k profit using a 100 tonne type 6. This only lasted something like an hour or so and then those routes were moved, got to 11 pm so I logged out and went to bed to let them settle down.

Opportunists are there you just need to find them.

Cheat. The game gives misinfo or no info on what's the best trading item for particular systems, so install slopey's trading tool and find the best routes and best items to trade.
I went from 60,000 credits to 1mill in about 3 hours, once I traded my cobra for a type 6.

4 more million credits to go and I made more money , since I started playing the Gamma release.

I wasn't focusing on trading before but it's nice to see that I could afford my cobra again with all the upgrades if I really wanted to buy it again. And in less than 3 hours instead of grinding for days and weeks with bulletin missions.
