You should be looking for metallic pristine reserves at either clusters or rings.

Metallic -> most likely to find the valuable materials like gold, palladium, platanium
pristine reserve -> best yield per scooped bit

I prefer rings because you can drop at any place, not only at the ressource extraction sites. Then you are alone for the mining process.

For beta 3.x the inner part of the rings with a slightly different colour was the place to go, see last mile directions in Gold Rush!

[Suggestion] Mining Tether and More

The biggest complaint I see about mining is scooping up the evil little floaty bits, and of course the refinery venting process so I hit solutions up for each.

Ore Collection: Why not give use a tether gun, lets get old fashion and just spear those rocks and reel them into our cargo hold...just use the cargo hold capture UI, lock on to your target and SPOOSH shoot a grappling hook that reels those puppies in, simple, no need for weird science, and has worked for fishing since the dark ages. It could take up an internal slot because it could also be extremely effective for pirates grabbing on the go, and salvaging in the future(lemme be a Junker!)

Refinery Processing: Simple fix let us pick our resources to be processed ahead of time call it the "Refinery Queue" and anything not in the queue gets vented, change on the fly as needed, but frankly nobody wants indite...its all about dat plat!

Quick Beginners guide to Mining

Hey guys I just finished up my first tutorial for Elite: Dangerous and the topic is Mining!

Let me know what you think, so I can decide if I should do more!

Thanks,
Joecool

Good stuff. Was wondering if it was worth bothering with, what with all the nae-saying on the forum - but I'll definitely give it a go now.

I know what you mean about catching stuff in the scoop - the first time I did that I felt like I'd won the jackpot (even if it did land me a 103k fine!).

Excellent guide, thanks for sharing :)
Let you know how I get on!
Thanks!

Do you think I missed anything? Was the sound OK?

Thanks for sharing Joecool, wealth of information to add to my skill base as an Elite Dangerous pilot.
No Problem, it was my pleasure. I am always looking to grow my skill base as well.

Hah nice! Catching those things seems to be WAY harder with Flight Assist OFF. With Flight Assist on I think the ship matches velocity with the targeted object when at 0% throttle (at least for scooping). Turning OFF Flight Assist makes it a whole different ball game!

mining laser looks like Christmas sprayer

mining laser looks like Christmas sprayer
there should be chunks of rocks falling off , flying around space
RIDICULOUS

Could you post a pic? Not sure what a christmas sprayer is (will google, but im sure others dont know also). :)

EDIT: Ok i dont get it. Searched tons of pages and i cant find anything looking like the mining laser weapon. I need a pic. Or maybe you mean the beam itself? It might not be final graphics. They are hiring a lot of new peeps for graphics, coding and you name it which could be an indication that things will improve/change.

Mining!

So i´m looking to become a gold digger in space.

I do have a couple of questions though. I just purchased the hauler, does the refinery replace my cargo space? cause that would suck.

Which type of asteroids are worth most? metallic?

Thanks,

Kyln out.

Hi, Yes you will need to give up one of the Cargo modules for the Refinery and also fit a mining laser. I would recommend going for a 4 Bin refinery as I always seem to need 4 different types of bin as in the asteroids I seem to find the "good stuff" after filling 2 or 3 bins with other stuff!

Can be fun though, and yes metallic 'roids are best.

As far as I know you need a refinery, a laser and cargo space. I made the mistake of replacing cargo space with refinery and there was no where for the ore to go.

I didn't get very far but it make sense that the rare metal asteroids are worth the most, look for the highest purity as that takes less chunks to make up a ton of ore.

You need both a refinery and cargo space. The refinery has a number of bins, and you can collect one mineral/metal per bin. When your bin's full it gets transferred to the cargo bay. Metallic is best, then metal rich, then rocky, and you can't mine anything from icy.

I used an level 1 mining laser for the "lower" weapon slots, but then I saw a mining laser around Lave for the primary weapons slot?
What kind of advantage does this primary mining laser have against the other one ?

I'm not so sure you need to give up a cargo module for the refinery. Back when I had my hauler, I'd removed the shield generator and the discovery scanner, and I'm pretty sure the refinery went in one of those internal compartments.

hmm interesting, but doing either of those would leave you open for attack. Especially since pirates can pry open your cargobay if you don´t have any shields. Not sure if I want to give that up.

maybe I will try it out. I also fitted a heat launcher on my hauler.

Yeah I'd advise against going naked when mining - not so much for the pirate risk but for the massive great chunks of rock wobbling round space risk :) You're working at very close quarters with massive irregular spinning chunks of destruction.

Re finding space for the refinery, giving up the Basic Discovery Scanner might not be a bad call - that should leave you still with the potential for 16 units of cargo which is about as much as I can personally bear before boredom sets in.

Metallic resources, then Metal Rich, then Rocky are your preferred types, with Pristine, down to Depleted quantities being obvious. I fairly rapidly ground out a Cobra from a Common Metallic belt around a sun. The sun belts don't seem to spawn pirates that I've seen.

Drop the disco scanner and upgrade the cargo bay to 16 tons. Scanner is irrelevant for mining, shields are not and may save you from asteroid impact when you get a little frisky scooping.

Mining in Middle of Nowhere - NPC Presence Makes No Sense!!! :p

So, I get in my car, drive to the airport - get on a plane and head to North Africa. I then take another car to a small town with an airfield and take a private plane out over the Sahara Desert. I wait a random amount of time, and jump out at a random point in the Desert with a parachute. After a nice decent, I land in a completely isolated spot - chances are no one has stood in the exact spot before - and if they have it will have been a significant amount of time since. As I am packing up my parachute a car arrives, and out jumps 2 people who set up tents and make a camp. A few seconds later a truck drives up and out gets a man who proceeds to fill the truck up with sand...

...I stand there totally gob-smacked. I went to great lengths to find this extremely isolated spot - yet as soon as I am here it fills up with human activity. I've no idea how to even calculate the chances of this occurring in this exact spot, considering how far away I am from civilisation. I fully expect others to be in this desert somewhere, but these people finding almost the exact same grain of sand as me seems incalculable!!!

This is exactly how I feel every time I drop into a ring system at a random point. I have travelled 400ly from Earth, OK NPC's are going to be all over the galaxy, it only takes 10seconds to travel from system to system...so chances of being alone here in this system might be remote. So I head to a gas giant, and drop off at a random spot in the rings. The area of these rings is many, many times greater than that of the land mass on Earth. Yet here I am, expecting to be alone - only to find some NPCs. This happens every time I drop into a ring. What gives!? :p

(NOTE: To those of you that like analogies - please don't take mine too seriously, it doesn't need to be de-constructed...in fact I will actually sit here and laugh at anyone wastes any time doing so... :D :p )
