The multi monitor thread... coz wider is better!

Two monitors? Any use for adding another one?

My video card supports two monitors. Is there any use to adding a second one? Can it be used to have a panel on as static instead of having to switch the main screen over to say the galaxy view?

As far as the game goes, your choices are really 1 or 3, and the 3 is only with an Nvidia SLI setup. I find a second monitor useful for out-of-game things. Web tools and such for plotting routes and bread boarding ships.

I use my secondary screen for TS,Steam and stuff like that.
And also to watch TV Shows when I'm running Missions/Trading.

As for actual in-game use, you can't do anything with a second screen.

Hail and well met all!

Quick question: Is ED currently playing nice with 16:10 Aspect Ratio Multi-monitor setups?

I am particularly concerned surrounding the "Galaxy/System Map" split screen issue. I currently have 2 16:10 1680x1050 Dells which are nice, and would love to grab a third, if indeed they will play nice with the Galaxy Map.

Is anyone currently running 16:10 multi-monitors (all same model/aspect ratio) in 5040x1080?

Your words of interstellar wisdom will be much appreciated!

CMDR Whiteneck out.

I didn't see if anyone had responded to your post yet. I'm using three Dell 16:10 monitors and the issue with the galaxy map is still there. I would say though, you get used to it after a few days... I don't even notice it now, my brain just ignores it somehow. I've sent a ticket to FD about it since using a single 16:10 screen works fine... its just UI placement really.

Having said all that, I would still go ahead and get a third screen. The experience with such a wide field of view outweighs any issues for me. When I try to play on a single screen now it feels claustrophobic to me.

I've been running three monitors off of a single Nvidia 660 ti using Nvidia's "Surround" function for a while now... works fine

It just combines the three monitors into one large virtual monitor. Most games I've played seem to handle this fine... if they don't handle it well then there are programs that you can download that help to position in-game UI automatically for widescreen gaming. I think the one I'm using is called "Flawless Widescreen" or something like that. You don't need it for Elite: Dangerous though.

One thing I was wondering about with the Oculus Rift. As far as I understand, it renders two separate images. Wouldn't that be pretty rough on the GPU compared to rendering the game on a single screen?

I have a monitor with 3D SBS display with the shutter glasses. It refreshes at 120hz instead of the usual 60hz and I still get 50 FPS with a Nvidia GTX 750 Ti so that would easily handle a dual display for a Rift.

except for the control panel of the galaxy map! >: [

I really don't get why some people are having problems with this. I run triple 16:9 screens on an ATI R9-280X with a resolution of 6096x1080 including bezel compensation. My galaxy map controls fit neatly within the centre monitor. I've attached a screenshot of it, with the areas under my bezels highlighted in yellow. As you can see, everything's accessible.

No longer true. All NVidia cards since the 7xx series support more than 2 monitors per GPU. That did indeed used to be a limitation in the 6xx series and before, though.

I personally have a GTX 980 with three 2560x1440 monitors. One using DL-DVI, the other two using DP to DL-DVI adapters. One card, no SLI.

well that is strange, I've tried at just about ever eyefinity rez available (at least for me), playing on r9 290's and always, always, the interface is split over the bezel area! 16:9 same ratio as mine, may I ask what size screens?

Screens are all 20.5", 1920x1080, Philips 222EL monitors.

ok, thanks. mine are dell's 24.8 @ 1920x1200! running at 5970x1186 (bezel compensated) you'd think they'd would work no! but it doesn't!
happy for you mate, but I just can't find any res that'll work on the map!

Have you played around with the FOV?

FOV doesn't impact the gal map.

OK well your monitors are 16:10, while mine are 16:9, if that makes any difference. I would have expected you to have a 5970(or more)x1200, what happened to the other 24 vertical pixels?

If you disable the bezel compensation does your map control panel appear on the centre monitor, the left one, or half and half?
I bet that would make it appear half and half, am I right?

OK, just rambling here, but bear with me...
If you're running the same width monitors as me (1920) and you increase the height (1080 -> 1200) and the control panel moves outwards that means it's sizing its display (and therefore placing it's panel at the edge of the display) as a function of height:width, rather than at a fixed width. That means that the 16:3 (3x16:9) display just happens to have the right proportion to place the panel correctly on the monitor. Your screens won't like it much but if you can force them to a 1080 vertical resolution (while keeping your 1920 width) you'll probably find your panel will probably re-position itself correctly. Try setting the three screens individually in windows first, then in the individual panel settings in the catalyst control centre, then finally create a new eyefinity group using those settings.

If that doesn't work then it's down to FD being able to manually allow you to set your panel position, maybe in a config file.

Oculus Rift: not ever tried it but looks awesome. Trouble is to my knowledge it's not commercially available yet and you can only buy a developer's version (is this true?). takes less space than three screens too.

Three screens: can be disappointing with the stretching of the outside screens which I understand cannot/will not be fixed so it's not as awesome an experience as it could be btu it certainly is many many times better than a single screen. I'm not bothered about burglars or ostentation but my main reason to go with this would be you can use it so well for other stuff i.e. I produce music and have three screens mainly for that purpose: being able to put sequencer on one screen, instruments on another etc...

So all in all I'd say go for 3 screens because although the OR looks cool and will probably give you a much better surround experience, the three screens give you a very good (but not perfect) experience as it is PLUS can be used for other things (other than gaming I mean).

Or do what I plan to do and get both. :p

If the Fun Prevention Officer allows it that is.
Why not both? 2015-02-28 22.39.09.jpg

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I even looked through all config files looking for something that might set that panel's position, but no joy. I assume you've ticketed it, for what that's worth?
