Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

Preordered, yay me!

A small group of very cool and talented folk from the UK (Guildford) making a huge spaceship exploration game, what more do you want. :)

Let's be honest, we are all in the same boat (in this thread), so yay you, yay us all, and double yay Hello Games. As for Guildford... well, yay Andertons music shop, where I have spent many hours, and a lot of money, and I don't regret a single moment/ penny!

What more do I want? VR support.

I am sure Elite will get to where No Mans Sky is at - but could it be too little too late? I reckon Frontier needs to get poaching some of Hello Games developers / coders.

Nah, FD is far ahead in most departments in areas NMS isn't even attempting other than Sony marketing muscle and press bookings. Once they get to atmospheric worlds it'll be handled in a completely different way that should be pretty nifty for us PCG geeks.

Looks like a fun accomplishment but it's going to get the same depth whines upon release as ED from those that don't get the point of such games.

As far as exploration goes NMS would seem to have more depth than ED. As for the other paths perhaps ED has more depth.

As for ED poaching NMS staff, I would think it more likely the other way around.

Would not pre-order such a game but keeping an eye on it. An impressive looking tech toy but the gameplay looks thin, which considering its origins makes sense. Folks quickly get accustomed to the new, I know I do! I'll be expecting some game design as well developed as the tech toy stuff.

It'll be interesting to see if they open it to modders - I can understand their reservations. They must balance giving folks the power to generate their own play experiences, but at the same time ensure that they're still well placed to establish a franchise, to be the essentail core past release. Future proof their careers and fund the next project/continual development of this project.

Hah, only been to Andertons the once but was very well looked after, even though I didn't end up buying anything!

As for NMS... I'm going to wait. It does look very interesting (and exceptionally well done, especially from a small dev team) but I want to see how it all pans out first. I generally prefer single-player games.

A refreshing view on NPC's. Looks interesting.

Not sure if this has been put up already, but just in case:

Edit:
They've been pretty quiet about anything other than the exploring side in NMS.
Reading here and there, seems as though there could be some real depth going on in the game. I think we are yet to see exactly how good this game is going to be. Really looking forward to this, I've pre-ordered already. Just drumming my fingers now. ;)

Has anyone got an insight into the differences between the PS4 release and PC. I have both platforms and I am trying to work out which one to buy for.

Assuming you have a sufficiently equipped PC, why would you buy for anything that's not the PC? You have the full choice of inputs from gamepads, to M+K to full HOTAS, the game is significantly more likely to support/be modded to support interesting things there (headtracking? Oculus Rift/Vive?), you will likely be able to play it at higher resolutions/framerates which may even adapt to various display technologies (4k, multi monitor setups or the likes)...

The only thing I see in favor of buying the game on the console if one has the options, is having the console integrated in a full living room setup, including surround speakers, while the is PC at the desk in a less "cinematic"/comfortable setup. And maybe that the console purchase would support Sony, if that's important to you.

"Plug and play" would normally be an argument for consoles, but seeing as consoles have been largely PC-yfied and the patching-broken-game dramas have reached them as well, I wouldn't make a purchase decision based on that anymore.

The one thing that makes me suspicious about No Man's Sky on PC, is the total absence of footage or press coverage of the PC version though. Is it simply held back by Sony in order to get the mindshare for the PS4 exclusively or is this an indication that the PC port is getting a step-fatherly treatment and they're reluctant to show it?

Yet, from what I read about the recent press hands-ons, they were able to play few minutes on a PS4 version but first were shown a real-time presentation on a PC version largely graphically superior than the one they played on.

Good to hear. The near radio silence about the existence of the PC version is still odd. ;) Admittedly, if I were Sony, the last thing I would want the press to talk about is that the game is on another system and might even be the "definite" version there. It just might have something to do with that, depending on how much saying Sony have in this.

I ordered it for my PS4.

The game looks nice and relaxing, so I thought it would be perfect to play whilst reclining on the sofa downstairs, my daughter will probably enjoy seeing all the wierd and wonderful creatures too.

Playstation is a Sony owned thing. PCs are not. NMS was originally licensed as a product to play only on console, if I recall correctly, and the PC version was a later enhancement. Sony has invested in it as a PS4 showcase, so that's where all their attention is going.

Thanks for the insight. Just to explain. My gaming pc is largely nabbed by my youngest lad. The PS4 is shared and NMS is a game I can see others wanting to play. I have a gaming laptop (970m) which should play it fine. If the versions were similar I would go PS4, but sounds like pc will be better.

just a quick correction, NMS was developed on and for PC while Hello Games were working on Joe Danger. It was a secret side project, and dream, of Sean's and a few key members of hello games. The PS4 idea came later, after they decided they did not want to work with MS (having had issues with Joe Danger and MS on the xbox port). NMS is a PC game, with a ported console version, which is like what happened with Elite Dangerous.

That's very interesting, because the original publicity for NMS definitely stated it was a PS4 game exclusively - I remember well because it sounded so interesting and I was disappointed that there was not to be a PC version, as I don't have a PS4.

Up until E3 in 2014 this was the case. In this article from July 2014 https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/07/01/no-mans-sky-pc-release/ it clearly says that a PC version has not been officially announced yet. Very soon after, it was announced formally, but the PS4 was still supposed to come out well before the PC version.

I don't remember when it was announced that the two would come out simultaneously - I think it may have been late last year but it wasn't until the recent definate release date that they absolutely confirmed both version to release in June.

So if what you say is the case then it was originally designed for PC, then a deal done with Sony that only covered a PS4 version and PC was "discouraged" by their big money backer, then when interest picked up the PC release was included again after all, and now it's back on equal footing.
