Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

Never quite understand this "jump ship". I have NMS preordered, I'll be playing it, I play other games besides ED! IS normal right?

It's not like being married or something. =p

Anyway.. Kinda avoiding watching any footage. From what I've seen so far I think the interest in this game might be unravelling the story, the game, the mystery, what's going on etc..

The less I know I'm thinking the better it will be. :)

It's a time thing. I only have a few hours each week to play games so games are competing for my time. That might mean "jumping ship" if a better game comes along. Let's face it... ED, in it's current state, isn't very engaging but it's fun to fly the ships. Sometimes that's enough for me. Will NMS be more fun/engaging than ED? We'll know in June.

Also, the video is spoiler free from a lore point of view. It's all game-play.

My only curiosity about this game now is what kind of controllers will be supported. Most console to PC ports have advertised keyboard/mouse but the implementation made the game unplayable. I do not have a controller and really am not interested in buying/learning to use one. I'm hoping there will be some kind of joystick/hotas support.

Well the good news is that NMS is a designed on PC then ported to console game, so keyboard/mouse set up will be natural (and the gamepad support will be nice for some).

I have no specific news on hotas support. I suppose if they wanted to steal the remaining ED players they could add it in (they have gamepad already, so not too technical a step to add hotas). I would feel gutted having dropped over £100 on a hotas to not have many interesting games to play with one! (i use a good old fashioned joystick myself for ED).

The flight model will be extremely arcady, so it will not really be adding anything the game. They will probably add some support but don't expect to much. NMS is a different kind of game in the range of space games.

After much "What is NMS?" It's essentially been described as a survival game by the NMS Team. Temperature on cold planets means you lose health - it was cool to see the player blasting a hole in the rock to find a warm underground cavern.

Other stuff is collecting stuff to get other stuff, mixed in with learning Alien languages by finding words and learning what they mean so you can speak to alien races. It looks good fun, although it better be otherwise it will inevitably fall foul of 'grinding your way to the centre of the universe' complaints.

More info.. Gets deeper each time. I'm looking forward more and more to this. :D

I would say, survival game? absolutely not, DayZ is a survival game, you don't need food nor water or any other daily commodities to stay alive, so the reviewer clearly don't know what a survival game / SIM actually is.

NMS is probably a great game to tool around in, see some new stuff and explore the surroundings. So unless you will need to hunt to get food, or collect water it is not a survival game.

Survival games are a subgenre of action video games that generally start the player with minimal resources in a hostile, open-world environment, and require them to collect resources, craft tools, weapons, and shelter, and survive as long as possible. Many survival games are based on randomly or procedurally-generated persistent environments, with more recent entries often playable online and multiple players on a single persistent world. Survival games are generally open-ended, with no set goals.

From here.

Somebody clearly doesn't know what a survival game is.

I just learned that in "ground-breaking" No Man's Sky there will be no gas giant type of planets. Because as the main guy behind it said "Gas giants have no purpose".
Also there will be no multi-biome planets.
I literally lost any interest in the project. I mean - come on! You making a space game and you say Gas giants have no purpose? What else will be left out then?
If this is true this its so dumb I can't even process it.

Mr developer - Gas giants have purpose - they have massive rings that you can explore and they have moons that you can land on. Do you know how great gas giant looks from the surface on the moon? NMS will the the first game with space theme with out it that's for sure.

Thanks for the links.
Well...that is odd. I've never played or seen a space game without gas giants. And if he wants all stellar objects to be landable, I guess he's ruled out stars as well. ;) :D

I am in doubt what is best. Having only planets to land with variety and content, or land on some planets and not have any content in them.:x

The lack of gas giants isn't a deal-breaker for me. NMS is clearly much more stylized in its look and gameplay than ED, SC, Evochron etc. and is not aiming for "realism". Gas giants aren't needed for the gameplay, so they just leave them out.

The single biome thing was a slight disappointment when I heard of it, but I can see why they are doing it that way. It simplifies everything for development, coding, rendering etc. I'm sure the decision was driven by a desire to keep the game's performance at a high level.

For me, all that is important is gameplay and the fun it brings. We are not talking about reality, we are talking about a game you can play to escape the drudgery of everyday reality.

I know better than to argue with people who think realism is important in a game with stargates/portals, aliens and warp drive though.

I'm very much looking forward to the NMS experience as advertised :)

NMS is geared towards sci-fi (almost 50's style), which is great, I love that look.
.
Plus..
ED isn't realistic, just get over it. There isn't really many, if any, realistic space games... Why not! we haven't been further than the moon with humans, so how would we know, what is and isn't 'realistic'. Maybe play Orbiter and get near to realistic.
.
Its going to be a game.. where you can pew. pew, just like ED. Trade with alien species, just like... O.k. then.. Explore and find great things, just like E... erm, well explore anyway..
.
Games are different, for those that want an ED game in everything, then I suggest you play ED all the time, because, well ED is ED and NMS will be NMS.. SC is SC, SE is SE and so on.. get where I'm going with this.. [yesnod]
.
Really looking forward to immersing myself in a sci-fi game that doesn't pretend to be anything other than, a sci-fi game.. 'Game' being the word here. [big grin]
