Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

This game looked good, but then I heard it was for consoles only. So my hype dropped to 0.

They have been doing a bunch of interviews with sites like RPS (most linked in this thread). It is currently running (so being built on) on PC and is planned as being for PC primarily.

They have expressed an interest in seeing if it can also get onto consoles, and with their previous console experience (Joe Danger), and with some guy from Sony apparently in talks with them, it seems likely it will come to consoles also.

As for DRM there is no info on this, although if they do also have consoles on-board, chances are it will be a big publisher release, so likely have all that crappy DRM stuff. But that is just conjecture as they have not even mentioned the DRM thing at all.

Yep, it's definitely a "money meet screen" situation for me. These are exciting times space sim wise. I just hope this recent resurgence in the genre is not just some bubble waiting to be burst.

I know I'm dreaming but I am hoping for a GOG release as well. :)

I think it looks really promising and am pleased things are still going ahead.

is it true that they were not insured for water damage?

If so that is utter utter madness esp given where they were based. I hope this is not the case! and wish them all luck.

I'd read that is more that their insurers would not pay out for the water damage, so probably they got 'got' over some fine print and being where they were located. And let's be honest most 20 somethings probably don't even think about flood-planes when looking for a place. A cautionary tale for all.

I wonder how concept art plays into a game that uses procedural data? Interesting to see the art, so thanks for the link Dull Bladerunner :)

I'd like to know that too :) The art pictures are really nice, but how good can you code a function to generate landscapes (terrain, buildings, plants) to match specific vision? Usually it's the other way around I guess, you play around and when find something pretty you stick with it :p

There are few procedural generation engines out now, but they are closed. To start with the really interesting stuff you need rather complicated 3D algorithms. I hope we'll get some kind of "blender" and "collada" for procedural generation soon. With things like sparse voxel octree raytracing you could describe 3D content as a kind of fractal. A bit of csg like fashion and with code and recursive functions.
