The Oculus Rift CV1 General Discussion Thread

Are you suggesting that FD are holding something back on the graphics front? I've just been assuming it's a combination of the resolution of the Rift magnified through the lenses and the huge scale of ED (i.e. small objects far away). Plus lots of straight lines (let's be honest the AA in ED has never been great even in 2D). So I don't know if there's anything they can do, but I certainly hope there is. After a week in the Rift, the novelty (of ED in VR) is wearing off and I now find that I'm regularly adjusting the headset in case it improves the clarity of both the text and the graphics (it rarely does).

I've read that you can use the Oculus SDK to unlock the resolution and configure things.

So yeah, I hear you about the novelty wearing off. But when it comes to weighing the lack of resolution to the benefits of full head tracking, I take the head tracking honestly. It's absolutely crucial in a dog fight and I find myself relying less on the minimap and just tracking my target with my head. Also I'm much more aware of my presence in the space and avoiding crashing into any ships in my vicinity.

The resolution does irk me though. Project Cars for instance looks much clearer to me, but of course objects are not as distant as they are in E-D. I'm hoping that over the course of time Frontier will optimize for HMDs and push the resolution to the limits.

Side note, anybody encountering some camera "shake" with the new update? I'm noticing a little shifting going on when in dock.

So I've read through dozens of posts with good advice on the setup of the Rift today. One thing I never saw mentioned that isn't sitting right with me are the stations which seem to be too sparkly and bright, way moreso than with a monitor making the approach to the letter box almost painful. Is this down to a particular setting anyone can think of?

I've never had that kind of problem before. Have you tried hitting up Frontier support? Sounds like a problem that has probably been encountered by at least one other person. Messing with settings doesn't have an effect?

Could someone please give me an idiots guide to setting up the x52pro,from start to finish please,i just cant get it working with the rift, thanks.

The Rift has no baring on your controls. Although ou can unmap look buttons and use them for other things. What specifically isn't working? I would think your questions might be easier answered in the controller section.

Anyone got any tips on how to use the galaxy map in the rift, I cannot navigate it for the life of me

That aside had my first actually gameplay with the CV1 this afternoon, (been running all the training missions yesterday)
Absolutely blown away, well worth the wait.

Not sure if you've got yourself sorted yet dude, but you need to bind something like the Hat control on a HOTAS to the Gal map controls to move around and select easier in VR. You can use a gamepad too.

1> Get the SDK tool and set pixel density to 1 or 1.2 or 1.5, whatever your hardware can manage and launch it before you launch ED

2> In game: set quality to VR ultra and smaa on
-> Did not know about the SMAA, but there is only a VR High (and not Ultra setup).

3> Last but not least, galaxy map will be impossible to use without setting up your hotas or the xbox gamecontroller to navigate it.
-> Even with the HOTAS setup it is a challenge to handle the galaxy map, unless you can type your target system into the field.

Try setting the Bloom to Low or off.

Some stations just end up in full sunlight - I agree it does make slot-line-up a bit harder - if you look at any sunlit surface on the ISS for example, its all blinding and very high-glare.

i had my 1st ever "sniff" of clammyness in ED in VR over the weekend (the clammy feeling is the early warning sign of VR sickness, ignore at your peril.

I was on a VERY bumpy surface, however fortunately i just put on that maintain level horizon or what ever it is and it sorted me out a treat.

i will still use the default for normal play, but if it gets too much for me at least that is a cure.

Urgh. Actually I'm pretty good in the SRV, no nausea at all yet, just a slight feeling of vertigo (once I was barrelling along the surface after recalling my ship, and my Asp decided landing right on top of me was a good idea, and that gave me vertigo looking up at it as it descended almost on top of my SRV!).

Considering I'm a bit prone to real-life motion sickness, its a pleasant surprise.

Has anyone tried "Dirt Rally VR"? It looks like it might be a lot of fun, but also has the potential to be vomit-inducing.

Good to hear that you didn't have any troubles with motion sickness. I think I need a bit of a yardstick though to ensure it's not just that you have a particularly steel stomach. Have you ever felt queasy driving Elite's SRV over undulating terrain?

I am a pretty bad driver. I bought the flat-o-vision version of Colin McCrae Dirt and I did fairly poorly at that, but I still had a lot of fun doing it :)

Thanks for the info. I've got Elite and I've got Ethan Carter. I don't want too much on my plate at the one time, but it's nice to know that developers are cooking up new games for the headset.

Iv got the CR1 set up. I tried running ED and on my monitor I get a window and a view thats responding to how I move the headset but when I put the set on, it just says "Unknown source". I got the key and put it in the oculus program. do I have to redownload elite from there for it to work? and will it play horizons too? It just says elite.

Does "Luckey's Tale" play okay for you?

Have you enabled the option to allow outside apps from the Oculus Setup?

Does moving the rift around your face a little make a difference? (you can tilt the front of the rift a bit).. also try thoroughly hitting the lenses with the rag, sometimes it removes a little bit of what causes the glare.. (although there is also more glare by default than a monitor due to the lenses.. so even perfectly clean it won't fully go away).

+ try reducing gamma a bit as others have suggested. I wouldn't recommend EDFX / SweetFX or any other 'contrast changers' also when using the Rift. Just my personal opinion / preference.. (I'm also the type that prefers 'matte' screens over glossy..)

New Rift user here. Not sure where to ask for help with this but this is a rift cv1 thread, so.. anyway

It really is pretty damn cool and everything looks nice enough for me, its just my position in the cockpit feels wrong.
How can I set myself lower in the seat?

It's like I am standing and up the body is way down below me. To look at the cockpit screens I have to look down all the time.
I tried starting up the game standing up hoping it would use that place, then when in game sitting down to lower my view, but it was just the same :(

I have not been able to use the "HMD Viewpoint Reset button" because there is not default for me and when I try to map it it crashes the game :(

To Rift users who cannot touch type and feel silly using voice control, I would like to recommend a gaming keypad.
I use the Nostromo n52 and it does the job perfectly.
Even looks a little like the control panel in the game next to the throttle.

I can also recommend foot swtiches, or if you don't want to spend any money at all, remember you've got mouse buttons that aren't doing anything. I use the XBOne gamepad but have a few wing functions mapped to my mouse.

Things you can try:
- using Oculus Home to reset your view - when in-game hit the Back button on the Rift remote and there is an option called Reset View or something like that - this is probably the simplest option assuming you have everything else setup correctly (see below)
- adjust your sensor i.e. tilt - move it around slightly and you will be surprised how much difference it makes to your viewpoint
- running the Rift setup again - there is a step where you enter your height, which when seated should be your head's height above the floor BUT I have a feeling that ED does not use this, but I'm just putting it out there in case the other options don't help

I have not been able to use the "HMD Viewpoint Reset button" because there is not default for me and when I try to map it it crashes the game :(

Hmmm not heard of that before, make sure you either raise a ticket or a bug report.
