Well as too a date,I long given up using the crystal ball, weegie board and play.com to get a date, and have now turned to that well know 16 century nutter Nostradamus. So

Century I Quatrain 99

The great king will join
with two kings, united in friendship.
How the great household will sigh:
around Narbon what pity for the children.

The great king will join
with two kings, united in friendship. Obviously that means Braben and bell will get back together and make Elite 4

How the great household will sigh: that mean us lot

around Narbon what pity for the children. The game might have a few bugs

So as you can see Nostradamus has predicted the game and by using the science of shenanigans,I have come up with a date sept 21 2012

Haha! QED

pilots lounge

yes, i hope we could all meet in E4's pilots lounge and laugh about all the infidel.
i didn't played all the games (space sim's) talked about here, but elite of course. one thing is offens, elite's open space is outstanding.
no other i played, wing commander, x, some i just started to.... offers the possibilities of elite, this is, i repeat myself, what players keep playing elite/frontier. it should not get lost. :)
i'm aware that it might be not david braben, who will realise this work, but anyway, his name will be forever in the annals of space exploration (in computer games at least). ;)

:D Spot on :D

i'm gonna be optimistic and say...............
tomorrow! :D
i'll pop down to game when i finish work n see if its there! ;)

On this subject, a rather eagerly-anticipated (by many) space RPG sequel has been released today. Amazon apparently sent mine off yesterday. Drool!

I will mention no names though, to avoid the inevitable accusations of having no taste in games!

there will be no such accusations from me sir!

Well since my date is now long been and gone - I'm going for a revised date of Mid November 2013

Having a good think about it - I'm going to push it out again... taking The Outsider as a guideline - so shall we say if The Outsider has about 12 months left in dev then it would take the start of Elite 4 to around about start of 2011 , then taking into account that the Outsider carries much of the AI and game mechanics as its core then the overall dev could take around 3-3.5 years? - I'd be saying late 2014 for a completed game release.

Well lets hope the Mayans are talking rubbish then....:D

If you were given three Elite IV wishes...

I thought it would be interesting to find out what everyone's headline 3 hopes and wishes for Elite IV were, in descending order of priority. Mine are as follows:

1. More than anything else, I hope the game retains and expands upon the procedural nature of the franchise to date, combined with the ability to start a new game and not have to sit through story exposition or tutorials. Being able to start new games on a whim has been what has kept me coming back for more all these years. If a high level story becomes too entwined in the experience then it's going to limit its longevity for me, even if the story branches. I want to make my own story by my actions and decisions, not step through an authored script!

2. A very close second is that I hope the game is balanced so that you can (if you wish) play the game with the self imposed rule that if your pilot dies then you start again. This is how I play Frontier Elite 2, and the level of immersion I feel when doing so is unrivalled to this day, where every dogfight, accepted mission and landing is a matter of life and death!

NOTE: I am aware playing in such a manner is not to everone's tastes, so like in FE2 it would be purely optional to play like this (or maybe a specially caveated mode...?)

3. I really hope that newtonian physics is retained for the game. When I started writing this list I assumed this would be my top wish, but I realised the two above were actually more important to me personally.

How about you? What are your three most fundamental hopes for the game?

As much as I agree, I don't think you can keep the "no tutorial" approach together with the newtonian physics today.

I still remember when I played FE2 for the first time, I was totally confused about the newtonian physics. It took two hours before I fully got that (and that you CAN fly to other planets and land on them).

It worked 17-15 years ago, and I loved the experience to learn, but today's audience is just different. If the game will have newtonian physics, it needs an extensive tutorial (embedded in a story) to get the players used to that. Otherwise, they will just move on and post on twitter how they "GOT PWNED BY TEH ELIET 4 CONTROLS ROTFL!!111 OMG LOL SUX *** CONFUSNG TLDR TEH MANUAL ROFL LOL!1!!1!1!! LOL ^^"

Here's mine...

1. Newtonian flight control. I always struggled with the original Elite but Frontier felt natural straight away :)

2. Realistic planetary systems. Procedural by all means, beyond a certain distance, but I want the entire Sol system to be in place and accurate

3. No cut scenes. They have no place in Elite!
