heh interesting that ***** b a l l s is a bad word!

It's a positively disgusting word ;) Especially when they are glowing.

But, with John Jordan on board pioneer will hopefully be one hell of a good game. And not a ***** up ;)

IMO they should implement standard, instant hit lasers, and maybe some mass drivers firing relatively inconspicuous projectiles.

Huge balls of fire indeed do look pretty stupid.

Also, JJ on board? W00t!
:D

Sorry about that, censored word list being a bit strict there :) You can now use the word balls, use it wisely.

Hi Folks
It's that time again, Pioneer has a new alpha release, lots of neat features here including new planetary terrain and an improved auto-pilot. Here is a link http://pioneerspacesim.net/download

Had a bit of a play. Can I have a little winge about the pulse laser? It's pretty horrible. Why does a laser make big fuzzy balls?

Also Joystick control could do with 1. Reversable direction and 2. some dead zones.

Visually it's looking nice, is it hard to impliment AA?

Laser arent instant hit laser but up close they are perceved as instant hit.

Also this make it the best weapons to attack fast agile target on long distance.

Well if we take agility into account the effective range would be depending on agility and evading effort the distance light travels in 1/10th up to 1/2th second.

And that relative far.
Put it on a auto tracking turret and it replaces the naval goal keeper.

Also if target move fast a 1/2 second long burst is not as effectif then a very short puls of 1/100 of a second so that tje energy hit is much more concentrated on the survice it hit's.

The only thing you see short or long burst is the target light up due to the hit.

Our space you move in is filled by gasses. Like the large clouds where stars are born as a example.

But that doesn't look so cool as visable slow moving beams

You scream, I scream

You are not alone in not being happy with the weapons Steve. Again, all I can say is that I am sure JJ or the other devs will be taking a look at them in a later release.

Dont forget how much stuff they have fixed and improved since the early alphas. Other things that have been hinted at for the future include colonization of distant systems, although as I said, this is only a rumour so far.

Joystick control is something that is evolving. I agree it's not perfect, but a hell of a lot better than it was. Remember too this is an open source project. Patience people, patience! You scream, I scream we all scream :D:D

yep, the lasers do look stupid imo to, but it's still a alpha release. even if i think that's important as well as working backfiring lasers or turrets, maybe some more freedom for a weapons setup i.e. X-Wing type a like ships should use 4 single pulse lasers by default.

unarmed enemies i dislike to.

Now there's an idea.... Star trek or Star wars ships! Imagine the cargo and military aspects of a star destroyer or a constitution class ship!
Is it possible?

i guess it's less a question of possibility as it's a question of authenticity.
pioneer is intented to be as close as possible to frontier, so battlestars and other giant battle ships using multiple turrets and or countless missile/torpedo pylons are not possible unless you would rewrite the game.

apart from that, managing more then two turrets isn't possible within a single pilot/captain controls all HUD, you would need a "crew" similar to ST games, it would become more strategical aspects then piloting a spaceship.

pioneer is like frontier to see as a game that transports the magic of conquering the seven seas to a space game, imo.
from this pov it's the very early stage of the course.

if you are interested in some SW ships i converted a couple of them from XWA to pioneer. you find them on SSC's download pages for pioneer in a complete setup alpha8. just copy the ships you like from it to a alpha9 installation (plus the SW-XWA sub_model folder, it contains the pilots for the SW-XWA ships).
some ships might have not the proper look in alpha9, something has changed that effects flightgroup colours in my models, depending on if that stays or not i will fix that.

(sorry download is down actually, because SSC has changed provider).

ok, the direct link doesn't work.
but you can download it still from the page i linked up above.

unzip with whatever you like to wherever you like
(common .zip archive, if you havn't i suggest to install 7-zip it's very handy for many archives, if zip folders didn't appear in your windows as folders with a zip on it, check in control panel, software, windows, there should be a checkmark on support for compressed folders)

Buffet2 will ask for the executable that should be used,
this could be
any JJFFE.exe
any GLFFE.exe
FFED3D.exe

once you selected a executable buffet will remember the .exe version at next start of buffet or JJFFE.

Yep the download area of the SSC is in a right mess at the moment. It might be time to dig through our hard drives and re-upload things to bring the database back up to were it was. And Gernot? I got the Oolite map, thank you very much! :) That will come in handy indeed.
