The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Eventually sure we do. Maybe even a character creator so we don't all look the same when we meet face to face.

But for now I would settle for about 20+ new mission types, a few dozen more ships and the ability to not be pigeonholed into trading if I want to earn a bigger ship.

I'm kind of there too. As long as FD can achieve something using a GUI, they should do that instead of making us walk around to do it - UNLESS they can make it worthwhile.

The player lounge idea is a good example of this. A nice little feature-rich chatroom would fit the bill perfectly, and making it a physical, simulated 'room' wouldn't add a whole lot, unless they come up with something awesome that I can't really imagine at the moment.

The sense of scale when descending into a planets atmosphere only to find another massive environment I find pretty damn exciting. Its a whole new canvas for content.

I rather we had a few blobs of paint on the canvases we already have first.

My personal feelings are that I'd much rather see all the resources that will be spent on landings and walking around spent on the core space gameplay this year, then maybe do landings and walking around next year.

But it seems FD are committed to landings and walking around for the first expansions, so I can only hope that they come with some content, rather than just giving us yet more vast open spaces with only a few simple things to do in them.

Personally I'd like to see this as it will add comiserably to the gameplay, especially exploration. I also think, if donecessary right, things like the bulletin board can become more interactive (like someone said, go to a bar, dodgier parts of the station to picky up dubious missions. Faction wars could be taken planetside. Maybe even fledglinget societies that can't afford space stations have docks on the planet surface instead. Make atmospheric flight a bit more challenging with weather, clouds, using instruments to get to safety etc.

I don't care about the walkabouts but planet landings will be very handy. Especially when wings are implemented and some of us go on group assault missions. Planets will be a good place to land, regroup and turn on silent running to stay off sensors. Am I giving away too much info? I'm a sucky criminal.

Im glad that the general consensus follows my own felling and hope that FD are listening.

Yes planetary landing and such would be nice but i hope they havent even touched them yet and dont plan to for a good long while, leave them for a year or so and spend this time on fleshing out what they already have with more character.
If they released planetary landing as an expansion tomorrow/later in the year/next year i wouldnt buy it if the rest of the game was still the boring grind it is at the moment with grind trading back and forth or grind sitting at nav point and kill npcs 1 by 1 as they spawn.
Dont get me wrong i love the game and will be playing it for a good while but fleshing it out with more variety of missions, conflicts, making mining/exploration viable, scaling missions/bounty hunting/pirating to make them compete with high cargo trading and make the more expensive ships worthwhile and giving it some depth should be their ONLY priority at the moment.

I'm not sure there really is a consensus here - and anyway we all know that this is not a democracy, and the forum is not a focus group.

As for myself, well, I'm an Elite old-timer of the most dyed-in-the-wool kind, and I'd probably not have backed the Kickstarter if David B hadn't mentioned the inclusion (as an expansion) of Planetary Landings. I'm confident he will deliver it though (you just have to hear the enthusiasm in his voice when he talks about it ... he really wants to do this!)

FWIW, I think Frontier Dev can work on more than one thing at a time, we're going to see a lot of new content (missions, player interaction, etc.) delivered in the next few months ... but they will *also* deliver planetary landings this year (after all, they did say that they'd work to that deadline). Developing an interestingly rich FPS component seems to be a more significant challenge, and I think that is for 2016 and beyond - so I'd bet on the 'getting out of your ship' stuff coming quite some time after the 'landing on planets' bit.

Just looking around pretty scenery would be enough for me. Being able to interact with the outfitters, commodity traders, repair broken subsystems whilst in space, etc, would be gravy.

Walking around? Nope, don't want it, don't need it.

Planetary landings? Yes, please.

Well what do you plan on doing when you land on the planet, just take off again? Lol

IMO, landing on planets and walking around go hand in hand.

Not to mention these giant awesome ships we're all flying. I busted my tail to get my Python, you're dang right I want to walk around and explore it and do things inside of it. Whether it be making repairs, or swapping out modules by hand. The full spacer experience can be so much more than just flying the ship.

I personally can't wait to walk down the boarding ramp of my ship, and stand back and look up at her. We might then actually start to comprehend the shear scale of objects in this game.

Sort out my trading, upgrades if required, and yes - take off again. Maybe fly around the planet and see what I can see.

I play Elite as a spaceflight and trading simulator, not as a walking simulator. I have legs for that.

Well keep in mind the subject of this thread isn't going to be seen till the end of this year, maybe. Hopefully there are plenty of blobs thrown in before then.
