The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

i do hope they add some content in addition to Wings as is slated for next major..IMO the current gameplay is betting a bit tiresome and wings dont add much in terms of content - esp in Solo - even something like walking about in stations - if not planetary landings - would add a breath of fresh air - ive been playing the same content since alpha - and felt a little let down if only Wings would be the next major update....

I remember reading that it'll take a while before we get planetary landings and such. It might not take over a year, but I doubt we'll see that stuff within a few weeks or couple of months. I fully expect we'll have to wait until the end of this year, at least.

Sorry for sliding offtopic but as for the 'personal avatar': I'd prefer a generic dude with a toned helmet visor and make it personal by gaining medals and patches to keep unnessecary assets and texture loading at bay. Character creators are always good fun but inevitably leads to frame drop galore when in occupied hubs. For example; go check videos of Lion's Arch in Guild Wars 2. All those personalized avatars...it's a nightmare.

yeah thats what I said - PL may be a while off - but station landing - and moving about could be first step? Heck - they can go in phases - just lets us walk about our ships and around it on the landing platforms - even before station exploration. Or even walking about inside ships - while in Super cruise - would be interesting if interdicted while your sauntering about :)..add something...in addition to wings...

The big seller for me will be how detailed they can make the landscape. It has to feel like you are flying over an alien world complete with weather, clouds, canyons, oceans, trees and other plant life. Hell I'd even say animals roaming around would be great!

A massive undertaking and essentially a game world in its own right. I for one would rather FD took their time to get it all in there than rush out some mockery.

I'm also hoping you can land on any flat surface and walk about outside/go on missions (FPS style).

How great would it be if the planets were procedurally generated but as detailed as something like Far Cry/Crysis etc?!

Planetary landing mockups?

I think it would be useful if FD could publish in this forum a few graphical mockups of what they envisage/hope to achieve visual effects wise for this expansion.

I think the resulting debates from the community might help FD shape the 'vision' as well as getting everyone very excited!

Early on, I would not be surprised if 'planetary landing' simply meant it just acts like another station. For this to work, the 'walk around the ship' module would have to be released first, because that mechanic is needed to work on the surface if you are to actually leave your ship.

Maybe it'll be something like this...

For me I could care less how the transition is handled. I would rather it be just a simple target planet, approach, then drop out (like landing at a station). What I do care about is the actual planet instance. I want to be able to fly around more of the planet than less. So if it requires a super simple load/transition from SC to planet atmosphere in order to give me tons of planetary area to look around, i'm ok with that.

I want it to be seamless like Frontier, tbh anything else would be a disappointment.

I find the transition between SC and stations a bit of an immersion breaker as it is, don't want it on planets also.

Planetary transition will most likely be handed like hyperdrive is now -- an effect (burning re-entry, cloud covering, whatever) masks for a few short seconds the loading of the assets.

I agree that SC transition to stations is very immersion breaking -- the station just teleports in front of you. However, hyperdrive is okay -- we only need more variety in travel times -- kinda senseless that travel to systems 1ly away and 20ly take the exact same 5 seconds.

I'm worried they'll try implementing re-entry heat without knowing how it works. If we sti ll go the same speed there shouldn't be

Seamless transition between planetary atmosphere flight and space.
Fast forward to 5:50 if you want to skip to the part.

I agree that landing on a planet will be a loaded instance. The level of detail in planets simply isnt there for seemless transition. Hopefully we'll be able to land at planetary starports as well.

like this concept shows!
