The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Landing on Planet could be like the stations, if the planet is populated with high enough technology you have to request to land, and if you try a planetary defense system could shoot you down or you can attack them. Have resources available to mine, could also get into also a FPS with the landing and having your crew fight to capture already mined or bought resources you could acquire.

Right, we need planetary landings.

Watching the No Man's Sky E3 has really made me yearn for planetary landings in Elite.

No Man's Sky looks interesting, but I'm not so keen on the fantasy visuals-- but it does give some excellent indication as to what can be don e with procedural generation as far as planetary surfaces are concerned.

We need this feature so badly - and with Elite's more realistic and 'scientific' visual aesthetic.

There's some that say no, but they never experienced elite dangerous in occulus rift and how immersive planetary landings and interactive it can be, they say they want content....well, hello.

the fantasy visuals was a deliberate design choice there, as it is really really really hard to make procedural visuals look both good and realistic in a consistent way,
we should keep that in mind when we ask FD for planetary landings, im sure they can do it, but it is lots of lots and lots of work.

Not to mention most people asking for this feature have no concept of what it will take to implement let alone what exactly are you going to do once you land on said planet? Look around? A pointless feature in and of itself and to expand upon the idea and actually have the feature give some sort of value would basically entail creating a whole new game. This isnt SC, elite isnt a module based game in structure.

With all respect.. scratch that, with no respect: You haven't a clue what you're talking about.

Another person who hasn't grasped the concept of procedural generation.

So.. clever one.. what exactly does one do when one explores unpopulated systems? Just 'look around'?

You heard of gathering resources, EXPLORATION, cities, atmospheric flight? Or maybe use your imagination and realise the new mission potential for surface engagements-- looting cargo, destroying buildings, gathering special resources.

Uhhh. I have lost all patience with this community-- clearly full of ignorant narrow-minded semi-gamers.

Fortunately - DAVID BRABEN seems very enthusiastic about implementing this feature. See, he understands why this is extremely important to put in the game.

yes, but i hope you don't think Frontier had realistic looking graphics too,
if you do then quite frankly i would be a bit worried about you.

What a completely nonsensical remark.

Just think for a second, that game is old.

Just... what... just try and make a smidgen of sense will you.

Uuuhh the ignorance to the fact that it's 2015 and procedural generation is on Anakin Skywalker force levels this morning.

Anyone saying it's a bad idea/will destroy the game/should not be done:

Too bad. It's been a fundamental element in the plan from Day One. David Braben himself has stated that this is his single favorite planned feature in a dev video for the future of Elite Dangerous.

I've heard these arguments about dev time being 'wasted' on unwanted/useless features before - there are distinct ghosts of a certain ambulation controversy in a certain space MMO.

You don't like the idea. Fair enough. Lots of people love it. Lots of people are so looking forward to it, they're almost losing their minds it seems. I have some doubts as to whether this optional feature will 'destroy the game' though. That stinks of hyperbolic doomsaying to me. I hope that works out for you.

Anyone saying it isn't going to happen:

Your trolling is appreciated.

im sorry, but procedural programming is just not magic that can create things out of thin air.
don't call me ignorant, i happen to be quite the nerd when it comes to things like this.

I'd prefer we get station lounge, strip bar, paint shop, to walk around ship inside and hanger as in the trailer. Planet Landings need just another instance to drop from SC and have a surface with atmosphere/weather to nav to a landing pad in a city. Nothing complex but the surface details are already there. Lets keep it simple and practical AND fun!
