The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

They have alot that needs to be fixed in the base game before they can add more bugs that will come with planetary landings. Right now we have more bugs than a Billy the Exterminator episode with very little relief in site. The last thing we need is more bugs added to a broken game

Too right. Bugs pre PP not fixed, focus on PP... PP bugs not fixed, focus on Xbox... Planetary landings would be another step in this cycle.

FD are like kids with Lego at Xmas. They get all excited about a new creation and start to build something amazing. But before its finished their excitement has moved on, the previous project left unfinished and there seems little appetite to fix it. Does the company not employ anyone that is a completer/ finisher?

Planetary landings would/will kill this game.

I agree on these points:
1) it's a paid for expansion apparently, so to avoid someone all you have to do is enter the atmosphere.

2) frontier and FFE had them and tbh most used the stationsin system than landing on planets

3) the whole space side needs sorting out getting it all complete before you can decide where to go on planets. After all is imperial planets a different building style than federation etc? Will there be caves, flora and fauna. Everything has to be worked out first otherwise the whole forum will fill up with 'you forgot this lifeform' and 'this wouldn't scientifically be able to live there'

Let FDEV get the game to the state they want before adding landing on planets

This is one thing that does annoy me about FD, their absolute refusal to crowd source any assets at all. There is a quite obvious lack of assets for generation (stations anyone?) and a huge fanbase that would love to help add to the game. They'd be able to pick and choose at their leisure what went in, and yet the answer to "let us help" is always a resounding NO. I never got why they do that.

their reasons is mainly legal ones i think.
its some,,,,,complicated stuff that always given me a headache when i tried to get my work into games.
basically everything that is not in-house developed usually (or always) got some upholder rights, and things can become really complicated if they want to make changes to it.
its why game modders like me usually gets hired by the game companies instead rather than just having our work licensed.

With all respect.. scratch that, with no respect: You haven't a clue what you're talking about.

Another person who hasn't grasped the concept of procedural generation.

So.. clever one.. what exactly does one do when one explores unpopulated systems? Just 'look around'?

You heard of gathering resources, EXPLORATION, cities, atmospheric flight? Or maybe use your imagination and realise the new mission potential for surface engagements-- looting cargo, destroying buildings, gathering special resources.

Uhhh. I have lost all patience with this community-- clearly full of ignorant narrow-minded semi-gamers.

Fortunately - DAVID BRABEN seems very enthusiastic about implementing this feature. See, he understands why this is extremely important to put in the game.

This "procedurally generated" mantra is getting a little tired.

At the moment we have a game with a milky way skybox, about 6 or so types of station, a bunch of spheres with different sizes and skins, a bunch of spaceships, and some missions. Now we have powerplay, a tacked on minigame. If procedural generation were at all feasible it'd already be incorporated to make this game feel more alive.

Planetary landings, if they come at all, will be like stations. A dozen or so differently skinned environments that are reused over and over. That will be the reality.

Don't be so utterly ridiculous.

Exploration is a fundamental part of the Elite games - or didn't you know?

Frontier had landing on planets, so did First Encounters.

Planets were featureless blobs in FE2 and weren't much better in FFE.

Planetary landings would need some serious work if they were going to match up to the rest of the game in ED.

We don't need for now planetary landings.
What we need now and before 2016
Is better communication tools from player to player it is tedious now.
that we can get out our ship and meet each other on the space station around our ship, lounge, bar etc

Landings need to have a point. One that goes beyond "Look at thing, possibly get money for looking at thing", like exploration works now. Unless they're able and willing to provide an incentive we really don't need such a feature before the base professions aren't fully hashed out and balanced income-wise.

Braben confirmed a while ago that planetary landings are coming to the game in 2015 in a paid expansion.

oooh really?! :)
was it something he said on E3?
if its true then im really exited!
it would be amazing and possible one of the greatest game developing achievements in recent years :)

i need a source now! :)

edit: why does my emotes look like they got a sarcastic grin? they are supposed to be happy emotes,
edit2: fixed now

The qoute thingy didn't work... Meant to quote the OP.

What we need is proceduraly genarated backstory.
This is IMHO what the game treuly lacks.
Im all for roleplaying... And i got my role, game mecanics to play out that role, but no backround/lore to get any kind of emotional connection between my role and the rest of the galaxy.(although some player groups do well creating there own)

What use would there be in landing on a planet when even a relitively small enviorment like a station doesn't have anything to do or any kind of culture to sniff up?

Lets wait with planetery ladings and first focus on getting us out of our ship and into a stations bar.

Never heard of this myself. Unless it's from a really old dev video where he might have suggested 2015 as a throw-away possibility for the release. AFAIK they have never specified anything other than a firm intention to do it, and it would be after the main game's release and the smaller updates to version 1.
