The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

FD are unable to release a decent product, I'd rather they fix what doesn't work first. Getting new stuff that dosn't work either is of limited interest.

If some people can't see this there is no point in arguing anymore. Some people can never be reasoned with.

Edit: Although I don't quite agree that ED isn't a "decent" product, just not polished...

Watching the No Man's Sky E3 has really made me yearn for planetary landings in Elite.

No Man's Sky looks interesting, but I'm not so keen on the fantasy visuals-- but it does give some excellent indication as to what can be don e with procedural generation as far as planetary surfaces are concerned.

We need this feature so badly - and with Elite's more realistic and 'scientific' visual aesthetic.

Why? If I wanted to play Far Cry I would load it up, I can nothing but a station on the ground and walking instead of flying, pointless.

The reason why planetary landing is not in game yet.

A Dev testing planetary landing:

Dev ( Thinking to himself ): Ok all I got to do is enter the atmosphere and land. How hard could it be?

* Ship enters the atmosphere *

Dev: Not bad so far. Onward to the surface.

Computer: * Beep* Warning outer hull breach

Dev: Noooooooooooooo....

* Boom*

Living in space without the ability to go planet side is ridiculous.

Well ... they kind of were boring ... and kind of weren't. They had worse graphics (than now) and less features. '84 Elite and FE2/FFE were very repetitive ... but ... we used our imagination back then. Yes landing on a planet meant a plain of coloured pixels ... but we imagined it was a forest or a desert or a mountain (depending what colour it was). Today we get spoiled, all the imagination is done for us. Do today's 13 to 15 year-olds use their imagination? I don't know, I'm 42 and single (and happy).

In 1984 Elite and its incarnations were amazing.

I remain hopeful that planetary landings will make it into the game and that the feature will have some depth and integration into the rest of the game. The developers have said they planned on doing it from the beginning and have designed the rest of the game in such a way so that it will work. In the mean time I am enjoying myself with what is in the game already.

This falls under things I would like to see eventually. Imagine flying to a metal rich planet that has been terraformed or a domed city that is essentially a mining town. Imagine the fun that could be had. Once we can actually walk around in stations or something, I'd imagine social zones like casinos would be fantastic fun. As an explorer, I would like to be able to actually land on a planet and walk around in the great unknown seeing the wonders of the galaxy collecting samples and such to bring back to sell with the data collected.

As to cities and the like planet side, I'd imagine that except for specific instances like the capital cities for the different factions, most cities will likely be modular or the same depending on the type of the economy. I'd be fine with that as long as there is something to do on the planet, social or otherwise.

I don't really care about planetary landings. What I want first is the ability to drop out of supercruise somewhere in deep space, power down all my systems except life support and the main reactor so that the cockpit gets that nice iced-over glaze, then get out of my seat and leave the bridge/cockpit. I'm sure there are other interesting places in my ship(s).

Seconded.
And not entirely unrelated of the fact I just bought a clipper..

Planetary landings will add depth to the game, literally. Right now all activity is concentrated in space, with PC and NPC ships zipping in and out of supercruise and hyperspace from station to station, system to system. There are these big balls under most of the station that often seem to be sporting some lights, but otherwise not partake in the game world. But all the tea and fish we fly around can't all be station-grown, right? Traffic up and down from planets, be it shuttles or space elevators or giant capapults, will add a whole new dimension to the game.

And when we can land there ourselves it may not be something we do often. It takes time to get up and down, and fuel, and probably apply wear and tear to our space-adapted vehicles. We may just do it for certain missions, maybe certain rare goods, for mining and sampling during exploration, maybe fuel scooping gas giants. Like Power Play it may not be needed to play the game and still have a good time. But it will add depth to immerse oneself in. Without it we will just play connect-the-dots in space as we did in the original Elite.

Planetary landings (and the more realistic galaxy) was what set Frontier and FFE apart from Elite. Where landings not possible, those games would have been shallow.

:D S

I'm looking forward to this too.

I'd also like to request that we get the ability can turn the engines right off, put the ship on battery, and let it go dark. It bugs me a little bit that, with thrusters all powered down, the engines are still burning.

Don't know about this as a worry ...

I just wish they didn't release it for console. its gonna hold back the development of this game and slow down updates and additions as well. besides, eventually we will go outside of the consoles capabilities and end up with a game that could be SO much better if they only focused on PC.

.. Though I take your point about console capabilities, Microsoft (as in xbox) also produce a certain PC based (Windows!) operating system.

as much as i want to go down on planets, i think there is a lot more "easier" things to put into the game before a massive thing like that.

things like comets, asteroids (big ones), old abandoned hulks, old battle graveyards etc.

like going down on planets do we mate? lol...
seen a doctor about that?

im really contemplating pledging a basic starter pack to "the other" space sim thats being made by mr wing commander.
just the thought of walking around a hanger and walking into my ship...getting in the different compartments would be fun for a bit.
and the new 1st person module thats coming.

been doing some h/w on it and it is looking very very promising.

any one here recomend?

NO!! We do not need planetary landings... Not yet anyway.

We need the core game finished first, so when planetary landings are introduced, they can fit in and add to the "completed" core game. It might even be advisable to do walking around first, so you can get out and have some more things to do.

Planetary landings now, would be a complete disaster.

EvE-lite is not a bad direction for ED to take.
No way....

I would rather burn babies, then go down the Eve route. If people want to play Eve, then go play Eve. Elite is a completely different style of game.

Terrible idea.

I don't know what your beef is with EvE but I can't see any other viable direction for ED, unless they suddenly go back on the whole Always Online thing and create a single player campaign. As long as it's a persistent MP game it will need some way for players to affect the universe around them. Otherwise it's just a sandbox without the sand.
