The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

When we get planetary landings does that mean there will be

lots of NPC traffic between station and planet?
If so that letterbox may become a bit of a chicane.:)

When we get planetary landings we may see less ships in space as many people will be actually on the planets.
I suppose planets will be big multi port space stations until they let us out of our ships.

Also people may go planet to planet and often not go to the station.

I've seen a number of NPC's pop out of SC near a planet with no station around it. I followed one out of SC once and found it just endlessly heading for the planet surface. That was a while ago (must have been back in beta).

David Braben mentioned, in one of the dev diaries discussing scenery, ships hauling stuff back and forth between station and planets. Mind you iirc that was the same dev diary in which he mentioned bigasp orbital shipyards... and we're still waiting for those despite them not needing to wait for planetary landing to be implemented.

No.

You are a lucky and privileged individual to have a pilots licence and a ship, Sidewinders aren't free you know! ;)

Most of those planetsiders will never leave their own system and have no interest in visiting a space station. At most you will see a transport shuttle heading up and down to the surface once an hour, unless those bus drivers who flunked their frameshift rating are on strike again.

My guess would be no.

While a fleet of interplanetary shuttles might be cool first time, it might end up like the ship's toilet. We know it's there. We know from the original manual who it's made by there's no reason to render it in game.

I don't think it will be as seamless as this. I imagine there will be a boundary that separates supercruise from planetfall to keep them as separate instances.

The older Elite games were seamless. One can still dream.

The older games didn't include a mulitplayer component which forced the game to connect to the people in an instance before dropping you in it either :/
I'd be surprised if the whole thing was seamless, not that the engine can't handle it (it probably can) but because of the muliplayer thing.

I don't mind an atmospheric entry loading screen. It is a bit more difficult for planets without an atmosphere, unless we're going to drop straight from SC into the planet and just use that loading screen.

It doesn't really do much for us though without more content to actually do once we're on the surface. We don't really need a wider sandbox.

If ED was a single player game : seamless PL yes.

As it stands, IMO, there will be a transition screen like there is from normal <--> supercruise

I wouldn't mind the transition as such, I just don't like the idea of PL :(

It might be that carrying atmospheric shielding will change how you can exit SC near planets, and that way end up in instances meant to allow you to cruise through the atmospheres and land on the surfaces.

Of course, that may be a non-issue with atmosphere-free planets. In that case, it may be we need a tiered distance trigger. Getting into the shortest-distance trigger zone would mean exiting SC in a landing instance. Which may work well for ships with atmospheric shielding in all cases, but not always well if no such shielding is installed. That way it will be another way Elite can be Dangerous!

And there may be an upper limit for what atmospheric pressure the ships can handle, so that we won't be able to dive into oceans without being the not-forgotten Moray Starboat and won't be able to land on surfaces of planets with atmospheric pressures on the order of 1,000,000 or more (we might be able to land ON the atmosphere though!).

:D S

Im very curious about how they plan to handle atmospheric flight. ~300 m/s are pretty slow (less than mach 1) to get anywhere on a earth-sized (or even bigger) planet.

Been a while since I rolled this one out.
