This part definitely struck a chord with me:
Instead of attacking Heaven directly, he proposes to get revenge by corrupting God’s future creations. Satan alludes to these possible future creations with the ominous line, “Space may produce new Worlds”
Along with the conversation about Chaos and the 'ancient night' it definitely evokes the Lovecraftian mythos MB wanted to weave into the mix. The Thargoids fit that image of the fallen angels seeding new worlds - ie. seeding discord within a civilisation - first the Guardians, now potentially Humanity.
Alternately the Thargoids seemingly emerge, like eldritch horrors, from "the deep, dark illimitable Ocean without bound..." where "eldest Night and Chaos, Ancestors of Nature, hold".

Yeah - there are parallels. One can see the influences of Milton’s concepts upon Brookes and Lovecraft. It’s evident from Brookes own description that these were the core inspiration that seeded Brooke’s ‘the space in between’, and importantly I propose the in-game cosmological model, built upon their remains… is this the truth which Raxxla may reveal?

Milton certainly was the first writer to establish the context of ‘space’ relating to ‘outer space’ and it being expansive and unknown, this is a seed Milton cast in the minds eye, where before there was only the ’word’, in some opinion you could argue he introduced the concept of true cosmic horror.

Miltons cosmos exists of itself, granted formless, it evokes the Otherworldliness that Lovecraft later touched on.

In the text Milton does indeed identify the existence of ‘other Edens’ populated with other beings.

In regards Lovecrafts or Brookes ‘Older gods’; Milton’s fallen angels are certainly great examples of inspiration, being incredibly powerful beings, with abilities that enable them to shape and move celestial objects and traverse vast interstellar distances.

Miltons wider cosmos of Chaos, touches upon concepts of infinity, with our ‘smaller universe and the defined area of ‘heaven’ as places which are thus seen as accessible, beautiful and knowable, whilst the outer void, threatens to defy our perspectives, and establishes that we are not the centre of the universe, that our world is tiny and insignificant in comparison.

In Paradise Lost, Chaos is the primordial space from which God cut out Heaven, Hell, and our universe. This original, undifferentiated, infinite space didn’t just go away after the world was created, however, but remains a looming vastness in the backdrop—Satan in fact has to transverse that vastness in order to get from Hell to Earth. It is within this gargantuan ambient space that creation plays itself out: a small aberration, and perhaps even just a temporary one‘ Jarod K. Anderson.

In Milton’s fallen, we can see the various sources of inspiration for Lovecraft; evolving from that seed of cosmic horror that threatens to reveal - man does not hold sole dominion, is insignificant in comparison and that another, more monstrous ancient race, may one day reclaim what was once theirs!

A Bridge through Chaos: The Miltonic
in "Dagon" and Lovecraft's Greater
Cthulhu Mythos. By Christopher Cuccia.

Lovecraft looks back to the seventeenth-century poet John Milton, explicitly evoking the terrifying cosmos envisioned in Milton's masterwork, Paradise Lost (1667; 1674). The weight of Lovecraft's stark references to Milton and Paradise Lost in this crucial tale foreshadowing the very Cthulhu Mythos demonstrates that the Miltonic looms large over Lovecraft's oeuvre. Christopher Cuccia

"The Essence of Cosmic Mystery": The Appeal of John Martin's Paradise Lost Pictures to H. P. Lovecraft by Christopher Cuccia.

‘H. P. Lovecraft harbored a profound admiration for the seventeenth century poet John Milton, drawing much inspiration from Milton's epic masterwork, Paradise Lost (1667/1674) (see Cuccia). Lovecraft also greatly admired one of Milton's most famous illustrators, Gustave Doré, who produced the masterful engravings for an 1866 edition of Paradise Lost, which Lovecraft's family owned, and which in turn inspired a Lovecraftian creature (night-gaunts)’.

"I began having nightmares of the most hideous description, peopled with things which 1 called 'nightgaunts," Lovecraft revealed in a letter of 1916, explaining, "I used to draw them after waking (perhaps the idea of these figures came from an edition de luxe of 'Paradise Lost' with illustrations by Doré, which I discovered one day in the east parlour)" (Letters to Rhenhart Kleine and Others 66).

Doré's gloomy engravings remain the most popular Milton illustrations to this day, but prior to Doré it was the English painter and printmaker John Martin (1789-1854) who could boast the most celebrated illustrations of Paradise Lost, and Lovecraft professed in a letter of 1928 that he preferred these’.

So it’s confirmed by Brookes from his blog that his ‘The Space in-between’ was certainly a Lovecraft/Milton marriage.

I suspect Brookes concept, of the universe being created by beings older than the ‘Christian god’ formed the basis of the cosmological model in game, in the same way that in his text Brookes states their corpses were the building blocks, that in game their names are used the identity its shape and form.

Likewise Guardians and Thargoids alike can be aligned upon this concept.

This forms the basis of my overarching theory, that this is essentially the truth being Raxxla…. it being I propose a ‘philosophers stone’ which once discovered, will reveal this to all eyes.

There's an image in that text which shows the relationship between the heavens/earth/chaos/hell by David Mason, is it based on something Milton drew or an interpretation of a description? It looks incredibly similar to the planting layouts in the stations. There's an image a few pages back.

I'm sure that connection has already been made though, and I've just missed it because I've not read everything in this thread.

Yes. Exactly. I am pleased you too have observed this independently. It most certainly is - in my humble opinion, the same design.

Was just idly browsing and this video cropped up....
Collionson Class asteroid ship?? Anyone ever seen one of these?

Pondering the Raxxla logo and what it might mean...
Milton's Paradise Lost quotation used in the final MB Tours TB: "fast by hanging in a golden chain. This pendent world, in bigness as a star; Of smallest magnitude close by the moon". I suspect this is a clue that Raxxla is hidden in a planetary belt, & that ties in with my interpretation of Li Qing Jao's garden design. The left part showing the Paradise Lost cosmology, the middle should be the target system map and the right hand part should logically be the location within the system! ("Paradise" represented by the 6 trees). Looks like a planetary belt to me, probably orbiting a gas giant.

So what could the logo mean in this context, specifically the dotted hexagon? A planetary belt is full of asteroids, so perhaps a very valuable asteroid? "Lonsdaleite also called hexagonal diamond in reference to the crystal structure, is an allotrope of carbon with a hexagonal lattice". If that's the solution I would hope to see a cheque from FD for its full retail value! 😁

Or perhaps an asteroid base full of Guardian tech? Or maybe the front projection of a Coriolis station?

I'm sure I've seen Coriolis and asteroid stations orbiting in belts around GG, but can't remember where & my Google fu is weak today (sleep still disturbed after copawlot's latest seizure, at 03:50 the other day). Can anyone remember any examples? I just want to check the orbital distance of a Coriolis or asteroid base around a gas giant...

Never seen one, video claims there's one in the Gateway system.

Edit: spelling.

Been to Gateway a few times recently, checking out parts of the Paradise Lost cosmology- it's a good candidate for "Heaven's Gate", but never seen one of those asteroid ships. Wondering if it was something that only existed in 2.3 beta concept...

They did exit I flew past one myself. Couldn’t dock with them.

Early beta phases FD began using procedural generation to build such objects from a database of fixtures, there was a newsletter about it too and some artwork. Sadly this was the culmination, but didn’t expand behind this, I can’t recall if there was any back-tracking on this or not, I would not be surprised, it was a feature I was looking forward to at the time (diversity) but was sadly a little disappointed they were so rare; they may be in game but probably only in a very low percentage.

b. Several versions of the Raxxla story mention an alien artefact, the Omphalos Rift, described as a gateway or tunnel through which parallel universes can be accessed. These details, however, were later shown to bear a striking resemblance to the children's story Princess Astrophel and the Spiralling Stars, and soon lost credibility. Undaunted, some Raxxla seekers insisted that the story's author had cunningly concealed facts about the mysterious locale in his book as hints for those with eyes to see....

5) @Rochester has incontrovertibly shown that MB inserted Paradise Lost cosmology in-game, and this shows the Empyrean as being in/on the border of Alliance space. At 31:40 EXO said they’re really looking for Raxxla, Will mimed zipping his mouth then said you are looking in the right place, you’re looking in an asteroid... No reaction from Sally.

Elite: Dangerous Fiction Diary #1 @7mins30 MB said “When you’re travelling in Alliance space make sure you’re not accidentally smuggling something illegal” with big grin and fixed look for several seconds. At about 10:21 he also mentioned the Martian alien artifact in the context of other sentient species in the galaxy (Guardian?)

The "alleged toast of the Dark Wheel":

Garden design:
Bah. Image deleted during copy & paste!
LHS is Milton's Paradise Lost cosmology ("fast by hanging in a golden chain. This pendent world, in bigness as a star; Of smallest magnitude close by the moon"), There is a tree motif, starting with 4 in the "pendent ball" in the left part of the garden, then 6 trees in the middle part, indicating IMO the prize...and 6 repeated in the right part. Logically middle panel indicates system, with "it" at second planet (not including moons, but does middle panel imply the broader outer ring?). RHS should logically indicate specific location - inner planetary ring?

Princess Astrophel and the Spiralling Stars? ...For those with eyes to see" & "a young man’s quest to save a princess from an alien dragon". I have long advocated that since we don't have the book mentioned in the codex then the clue must be buried in the title string, probably as a subanagram, and somehow the book title hint from Elite Legacy must also correspond to that from the codex...it took me a surprisingly long time to realise "alien dragon" is a viable subanagram of "Princess Astrophel and the Spiralling Stars"! (I blame my advanced age and too much Lavian brandy). Note: the Princess may be from an alien dragon, or threatened by it..the context is unclear-read on!

"Alien dragon": in addition to meaning "extraterrestrial", "alien" can mean "coming from a foreign country", so I looked at "dragon" in various foreign languages: Draconis, Draco, Long, Ryu, dragon, drake, drache, drago, drakon, zmiy, dragua, herensuge, cmok, zmaj, drac, dragone, drak, traekke, draak, draakon, drachen, sarkany, dreki, dragan, smok, dragao, balaur, continuar, draig, dregana, ajagar, zaj, dryagan, aydahar, yong, ajidaar, mangkon, draagan, dreganaluu, nagarr, dryagana, ajagara, makara, tirakan, ejderha, aagondarha, ajdaho, Rong, ziha, draak, zenido, chinjoka, dodon, ikiyoka, drakone, dhiragoni, masduulaagii, joka, inamba, dragoni, udrako, deragona, naga, dragona, tarakona, tarako, doragon

Spreadsheet search of systems in Alliance space: I built a spreadsheet of the ~1100 system names within 60ly of Alioth and did a substring search against the various foreign language dragon names. Ryu system stands out as the only likely "alien dragon" (only one "Ryu", though 2 Draco & around 16 Draconis systems, investigated a few, nothing promising). 'Ryu' is the Japanese word for dragon, specifically the East Asian sort of dragon (wingless, long bodied, four legs), while 'Doragon' is the word for Western dragons.

Ryu system matches the middle part of the garden design! The star, planet 1 and it's single moon were first discovered by "Princess Luna" -this commander name joined the forum Feb 2016, but can't see any posts after 2017; while planet 2 and it's 6 moons were discovered by another. This matches the report that MB said (during the last Q&A he attended, so Lavecon 2017) that the Raxxla system had been honked but Raxxla was not discovered; the earlier three discovery scanner options (Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced) were condensed into a single, infinite-range scanner with Beyond Chapter Four release on December 11, 2018 (also it is very probable that Raxxla/Omphalos is not detectable during normal scanner operation). It's possible that "Princess Luna" was one of the FD team, or the name coincidence gave rise to the codex hints, but the use of "Princess" in the codex is suggestive, as is "Luna" (moons are star lovers, they follow them around!). Only space station in Ryu is outpost Francisco de Almeida Hangar ( the family name is derived from the Arabic words "al ma'ida," meaning a plateau), but see no hint here. Distances: 43.07 ly to Gateway, 46.07 to Alioth, 78.62 to Sol, 108.4 to Tau Ceti.

The MB Tours final Tourist Beacon Milton's Paradise Lost quotation ("fast by hanging in a golden chain. This pendent world, in bigness as a star; Of smallest magnitude close by the moon") suggests that Raxxla/Omphalos is located in a planetary belt (hanging in a golden chain?) but near the moon does not fit as Ryu 2a moon is orbiting faster than the belt asteroids.

I feel that at this point the Raxxla logo should provide a final clue, but I can't resolve this part of the puzzle.
Bah. Image deleted during copy & paste!

Something hexagonal hidden in a planetary belt?
"Lonsdaleite also called hexagonal diamond in reference to the crystal structure, is an allotrope of carbon with a hexagonal lattice as opposed to the cubical lattice of conventional diamond", and is found in meteorite debris, formed by high temperature and pressure impacts converting hexagonal structure graphite into diamond. If this is the solution and Raxxla is a giant diamond asteroid I want an FD cheque for my share of the retail value!

Ryu2 has 6 MOONS, suggesting the hexagonal symbology. They're in coplanar circular orbit, the barycentre lies within planet 2. Does dotted line imply a complex orbit between all 6 moons, not sure that's feasible?? Or possibly hidden behind somehow?

Ryu 2 Ring dimensions are 118,440-145,580km; 0.395-0.486ls/ 145,680-469,960km; 0.486-1.568ls, so ring midpoints at 0.44ls & 1.027ls. Inter-belt gap should be at 0.486ls.
Ryu 2a orbital radius is ~4.84 ls/ 1,450,995.5 km/ 0.009699 AU

The trees in the garden design are not equally spaced! If a line were drawn between opposite pairs that would give the logo "asterisk"...? But logically that ought to be repeatable in the system to localise it, however there are only 5 mineral hot spots in the belts. Drawing lines between the orbiting moons will only give a very infrequent hexagonal alignment....is this a time-gated puzzle, does the Omphalos only open when the 6 moons are in regular hexagonal alignment??

The logo is reminiscent of Hecate, key holder of gateways, symbol the Tri-Via triple-crossroad, the triple moon goddess, one of her aspects being Luna...so a hint to the moons and confirmation of the system?

So is there a hint to a specific location within the belts?
There are 33 dots in the logo dotted hexagon...if these were light second counts the hexagon circumference in the logo would imply a radius of 5.25 ls...nothing found
#dots= 5 5 6 6 5 6 total 33...Is this indicating an Orbital distance? (5)56 (6)56?
556,656 km=1.857ls
566,565km=1.89ls
665,655km=2.22ls
656,556km=2.19ls dry dry
565,566km=1.887ls
655,665km=2.187ls

Nope- tried these..
Could be in light seconds for very distant orbital radius, but then wouldn't fit the quotation or location at planet 2.
665,655ls circumference, radius=105.94ls
565,566ls circumference, radius= 90.01ls
tried 100ls above & below Ryu2 poles.

Lagrange point "close by the moon"? (So L1 or L2?)
Mass planet 2,293.3054 Earth Masses
Mass inner ring 150,960,000,000 Mt / 2.52616464e-005 Earth Masses
Mass outer ring 4,422,300,000,000 Mt / 0.000740028 Earth Masses
Mass inner moon 0.0015 Earth Masses Semi major axis 4.84 ls
Ring masses are very small compared with planet 2 mass, so ignore for Lagrange calculation.
L1 -89,441.651 km (-0.298 ls) secondary; 1,361,553.844 km ( 4.542 ls) primary
L2 93,276.651 km ( 0.311 ls) secondary; 1544272.146 km (5.151 ls) primary
nope- nothing at L1 or L2

Running out of ideas! Need inspiration/Lavian brandy!
I've been carrying around a Trinket of Hidden Fortune while conducting this research, it's brought me no luck & I'm getting heartily sick of doing it in the dark (Ryu2 is a long way from the star, and the belts, planet & moons are dark!) while dodging pirates.. I'm getting frustrated & bored. Plus, Sandro was the initial game designer & I always thought he over relied on difficult RNG mechanisms....

Why Petunias? Why not! the answer to life, the universe, and everything (ergo including Raxxla) is 42!
🤔🤔🤔

This Citadel idea may something to it. Also, been checking mountain and hills and that like Arx currency seems to point to mountains or defensive hills being important.

Citadel can mean Fort or Fortress. There are a few other words meaning the exact same thing.

  • We have quite an number of Orbis stations with Fort or Fortress in the name (also a few oddball Coriolis). These would have been "abandoned" in 3008 when Gaylen Trasken Duval made peace with the Federation.
  • Per Drew Wagar, the Club wanted central control via the Empire. This happened before the first game. The Feds were rebuffed when asking the Empire to join but the reverse apparently went through. This being why almost any faction has long haul supply routes to Imperial systems.
  • There is a system Arx Arcis which is Latin for "The center of the castle" - https://inara.cz/elite/starsystem/21907/ . Also, probably a candidate for a in-person visit

🤔🤔🤔
The "why" of Raxxla not being found might very well imply a temporal component - much like the Roman umbilicus hosted a purported gate to the underworld, opened just thrice per year on dedicated holidays.

Also... if Satan was looking directly downwards to the Earth, he might've been on the north ecliptic pole, which is surrounded by the Draco constellation. By definition, It has a right ascension of 18h00m00s - perhaps we could search for what's around there?

Just for the record: TDW novella is but the tip of the proverbial iceberg but the codex in-game recycles the phrase "gateway between Universes".
Indeed. Quite the interesting list of litterature you've found there btw. :D
The "why" of Raxxla not being found might very well imply a temporal component
I am 99.99% sure that is the case; the unknown sattelites and some things only broadcasting once per 24 hours is testament to a certain dedication being required.

Has anyone actually read Michael Brookes' "Sun Dragon"? I own it on Kindle but admittedly the books written for Elite Dangerous had been higher priority.

Not read it myself yet. One of those I seem to want to, but never finding the energy towards actually engaging.

It’s evident to myself that the reference in the codex to Atlantis etc, is an example of a direct reference to the systems in game around Axis Mundi, which I designated as the Lost Realms, these are in my opinion a direct literary reference to the writer Robert Holdstock.

So we have a architect who seeds their galaxy, with literary Easter eggs.

One hypothesis is that the passage in the codex about Princess Astrophel and the Spiralling Stars, is I believe is also another literary reference, to that of Brookes Elite Legacy.

Much like @Jorki Rasalas I suspect the title of the children’s story mentioned in the codex, is the actual book given to Legacy’s protagonist, Julia, and that Brookes was referring to his own work, in that clues to the location were seeded in his books.

Brookes paints himself into his own book of Legacy, as the character Hammer. That is a very bold move.

I suspect he is repeating that motif, by using the ‘official’ novella to give the location of Raxxla, but that it in part involves his other works too. Namely Sun Dragons and the Tau Ceti Mission, repeating this motif of self portraiture.

I’ve not read these. But the inclusion of Tau Ceti, and a story in another story about ’space dragons’ is so coincidental it cannot be arbitrary.

A question then is, do these Sun Dragons ‘spiral’? Who is the star lover of these three books? And what locations has Brookes referred to in these three separate books? Is there a common theme?

Again I find Brooke’s writing particularly dry, and focussed too much on minutia, so if there are clues, they may be difficult to identify, but on re-reading Legacy, only partially Brookes does in one short passage, reflect upon Norse gods, in the way he describes Hammer, like one of those old mountain men of myth, also he references in another section a system named after a river god…

So we might have various references to the Norse systems or Older Gods systems? Who can tell…?

I don’t believe he seeded his older works intentionally, but that Brookes is re-using them, this is a common trait artist do in their work, they reuse older work or contextualise it, alongside that of their contemporaries, and immortalise themselves through their characters.

I don’t believe it will be obvious, as I believe Brookes did this surreptitiously without DB knowledge.

It might not be so contrived.

The inclusion of the memorial of Brookes Tours begins and ultimately ends in Artemis, reflecting upon Legacy, by referencing Hammers burial.

That burial method has always read suspiciously similar to that of the in-game Trinkets of Hidden Fortune.

The Trinkets in game were linked as FD confirmed via a support request, linked to that story (dark wheel missions) but were at most a curiosity. What if the Trinkets have no real mechanical purpose, but are evidence of ‘environmental storytelling’?

Another alternative could be, is this just reference to one of his books, such as Legacy, and that it holds some clue in game? Is the codex simply a reference to the system Artemis, and of what happened the, are we supposed to look for Hammers grave?

Is Julia’s book, one of the trinkets placed in that grave?

I bought Sun Dragon on that premise, but didn't find it an enjoyable read (too much dry detail), or helpful in this quest. And the Tau Ceti Mission reference is also an interesting possibility (read it online, also didn't seem helpful).

However in answer to the forum post "Legacy was billed in the Kickstarter campaign as a sequel to The Dark Wheel, however, I was expecting more of a direct follow up ...There was a throwaway reference to Raxxla near the beginning of the story but... " MB did explicitly respond “It was more of a spiritual successor than a direct sequel. We did look at a story involving Raxxla, but felt that was a story that should be played out in game rather than as a novel.”
(See my FD Quotes thread https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/fdev-ed-relevant-quotes-videos.553526/#post-8671776)

SO, I'm convinced that we have all the clues necessary to find Raxxla embedded in-game; anything external (like Legacy) is just a helping hand. The repetition in Legacy of the subanagram I found from the Codex clue, and the interesting appearance of the first discoverer, increases my confidence that I found the correct system. I'm reasonably optimisitic that the logo gives information on how to activate the solution, which is obfuscated....but it's frustratingly obscure!

I vaguely seem to remember (& Cmdr Koben also posted in this thread his recollection of the same conversation ) a very early livestream where DB commented in response to a question about Raxxla along the lines of:
DB: "It would be more likelly to reveal itself to a group of players."
Interviewer: "How so?"
DB: "If you are at the right place and you scan it enough..."
Interviewer: "Advanced scanner or the basic one?"
DB: "Basic scanning is enough."
Interviewer: "But you have to be Elite..."
DB: "You have to be Elite."

(Edit: the requirement for being Elite I initially thought was a hint that it was located in ShinDez, but in hindsight it may just be an additional location requirement as a nod to the original Holdstock novella phrasing (or just more obfuscation? or dangerous situation when "it" reveals itself?))

So the logo may be instructions how to scan for it? I was wondering while half asleep this morning if the three arcs might represent scanner honk directions...

The other semi-conscious thought I had was whether, given the rich variety of interaction tools FD have provided us (🤔🤣), perhaps we have to use our lasers to shoot at something to activate it...given the (IMO) likelihood that it is Guardian, then I'm reminded of the Guardian beacon activation, which IIRC requires shooting three things within a timeout period...must look up my PC videos of doing that...do any of the objects involved match the black area shapes of the logo??

(Edit2: mmm, just looked at the Guardian Beacon wiki and I can see some similarity between their outline and the six black areas of the logo!)

Edit3: that "It would be more likelly to reveal itself" does lend weight to the hypothesis that it is invisible until somehow activated!

Let me add another layer here. There appears that Far God has real Chapters in real places and one of them is quite interesting.

Chapter of Hikenk
Chapter of HIP 60016
Chapter of Isinor
Chapter of LHS 2165
Chapter of Vocovii
Chapter of Zamyruaymir

Additionally, the asteroid bases were originally known as Hermit Rocks/Hermit bases. Hermit and Hermitage are religious terms for places of solitude for religious disciples. Need I remind everyone that one of these is located in Lave where the "Lavian Phoenix Greeting Protocol" was located.

Lavian Phoenix Greeting Protocol

The old mercenaries preferred a silent hail when meeting in deep space . Approach dead ahead with gun ports open at ninety degrees to target. Stop at five hundred metres , rotate ninety to the left and wait for same response.

Once established, custom is Phoenix members help each other. Your new friend might fly your wing for a while, but they’ll be gone if something comes up.

No pilot violates the greeting. If they does, let it be know. The Lady of Fate don’t smile on traitors.

Also, I'll say it again (because I mentioned it previously): "the jewel that burns on the brow of the mother of galaxies" is quite literal. There is no metaphor. Take it as is and find Lucy in the sky and DM me if you know where it is located.

I believe this may be the beginning of the trail...

Connection to Ben (Ryder) perhaps?

This would be very close to their home which appears to be BD-22 3573 based on proximity to Isinor, economy type, and Alex Ryder's sky surfing.

And the Tau Ceti Mission reference is also an interesting possibility (read it online, also didn't seem helpful).

I agree the sun dragon novel didnt seem to have any connection to elite. However - if i remember right - the indication in the tau ceti missions that a rouge planet from the tarantula nebula ( sun dragon delivery system) swung by tau ceti killing off an advanced civilization. I like it for several reasons - Tau ceti being the first mention of raxxla. The Magellanic clouds and raxxla possibly being a rogue planet ( a common speculation) …. Even with the holdstock book tour of the galaxy -they were going to the Magellanic clouds…. But ya - nothing terribly concrete to work with. Hmmm giving me some ideas …
