Is there a way to get the download benefit of my 1Gbps internet speed? The last update just trickled in at around 10 Mbps for over an hour. I gather Steam can support fast download, but my ED is from FD.
I had the same issue, the FD link through your desktop is to a specific location in the UK, in my understanding it’s is a rather old and limited link which is prone to slow connection based upon locality.

The Steam key, does not actually replace your desktop, it’s just a launch window.

FD obviously supply these 3rd party apps with updates, and in my experience are probably better supported than the official link.

When my PC worked the steam key was my preferred access point, and updates took seconds rather than minutes/hours.

I suspect Polaris is locked because it was so important to previous versions of Elite. To reinforce that ED is different and previous lore may not apply.

Im of the opinion that Polaris and all the other locked off sections of the galaxy were all part of a now retconned version of the game.

I do suspect FD made an executive decision at some point and diverted the game development. I presume these are now simply redundant.

I understand the general interest in mythologies in this thread; MB ceetainly put a lot into the game design. However I'm suspicious over the assumption that the puzzle is fundamentally based on it. There's a danger that we get lost in the myth. I suspect the Road to Raxxla may be more like an old Bob Hope film...that it's a joke, an Easter egg, and that we're drastically overcomplicating it. WHY did an FD spokesperson say they were surprised we hadnt found it yet? (source required!!). That statement implies the solution should fairly obvious, and/or we have sufficient clues to find it. The mythology may be just for obfuscation, for a source of system naming ideas to bring the game to life, to embody concepts that MB personally liked.

I too suspect it’s been overblown. The solution is likely much simpler than expected.

I suspect FD statements around them being wrong / not understanding Cmdrs play style, advocates aspects of the initial design were much simpler. This may be linked, I speculate, to previous and non developed aspects of the original game design.

Case in point, there is an early video where the Devs behind the galaxy map stated, along the lines, we could make it more complex, add tools etc, but we’ve intentionally omitted them to force players to think around these problems.

I think FDs original approach, was far more linked to in-station news, local factions and hidden missions. Remember that initial ranked missions were initially hidden, until FD nerfed them because players moaned there wasn’t anything to do.

I suspect there was a particular game play perspective, but rather than communicate, they followed a path of least resistance and with a cynical need to retain players, just amended the game to suit.

In this respect I do think the original mechanics have likely been overlooked and Raxxla was supposed to be easier to find.

Some of this will be processing speed of comparing files for the update locally, rather than the download itself. Are you installed to a SSD or a traditional hard drive?

Mine normally gets 20-30Mbps from Frontier's servers if I leave it to it, but if I do other stuff requiring disk access on the computer it drops to single figures.

Mmm. Good question. Ive got an ssd for C:/, but hard drives for data etc. it's probably loading to the hard drive. But I get so bored waiting for it to download I don't have anything else going. I get bored waiting up to 15 - 30 minutes for the download to actually start!!

Sorry, are you saying I can download through Steam even though I havent bought it through them?
Didnt know that was possible..thought it had to be in your Steam library (after purchase) to get it that way...

A friend also has fttp internet and said Steam downloads are relatively fast (he's a COD player, not ED)

In that case disk speed is going to be more of a constraint than network speed.
(I did notice a big speed up when I moved from Windows to Linux to run ED, so you might be able to get a bit faster by turning off Windows Defender temporarily while the update is running)

As I understand it, the Steam downloader patches the files in a different way which probably is more network-limited.

OK
I've googled this slow download problem and people have been complaining about it since 2015!
Come on FD, surely you've made enough profits to be able to buy a faster internet connection & server! ;)

I've now installed the mini-ED launcher and will see how that goes on Thursday. Apparently it caches the download files in the Windows cache area (on my ssd!) before installing so should be much faster (crossed fingers!!🫰🫰)

I found the instructions a bit confusing...when you add the "/frontier profile-name" argument to the minilauncher's shortcut Target properties you actually need to add " /frontier "+"your own made up name for this"
e.g. " /frontier Jorki" (without the quotes!)
the first time when you run the shortcut you're prompted to insert your Frontier login email address and then prompted for your login password, FD will then email you a logon confirmation code, enter that and the minilauncher then sets up a login ".frontier-jorki.cred" credential file on your PC so you only need to do this once on setup. You can set up multiple shortcuts to the minilauncher for multiple commander accounts.

Yes.

I too bought ED through FD. Each purchase actually has a free Steam key. Look into your FD purchase library on the FD store, it will be in there.

Enable it and the game will just launch through Steam. I had found it increased update speeds by 400%.

It’s a common problem since forever.

Are you sure?
Just looking at my FD Store account at the Odyssey upgrade in 2020... No Steam Entitlements, no sign of any Steam key.

ah partner keys, looks like I should be able to log in via Steam and that might generate a Steam key...

I'll try the minilauncher mechanism first, having spent all morning on it

Yeah if you have access to the Steam version it's the obvious choice. Valve has the bandwidth so use it for free!
Any studio that complains about 30% cut is forgetting those costs go to a hosting service that gives your customers access to convenience.

What sort of download speed do you see through Steam, and what's your internet speed?

Well in honesty I’ve not utilised my PC since Odyssey rolled out and it gave up the ghost of the GPU and my wife bought me a console.

But irrespective when it was working, the PC nor my internet speed nor connectivity were ever the issue.

Pre-steam updates through my FD launcher would take hours.

After using Steam they took seconds.

FD confirmed to me it was due to their server which was a bit glitchy, and problematic.

My issue related to a 'Update Failed for file' error, which FD identified as occurring usually when an older installation of Elite Dangerous still has some remnants left behind and their patch fails to overwrite them. Even with a full system wipe.

In short the FD service could not overwrite certain data because of an out of date / incompatible files from the FD side. The Steam service had a dedicated and up to date patch and distribution system and worked/s like a dream.

FD essentially confirmed to me it was their service was not fit for purpose (at that time).

Same for me... it's a couple of months since I played ED, and then the only thing that interests me is Raxxla. -- Raxxla is a good puzzle (actually a bit too good!!).
Speaking of which , i'm surprised no one has posted THIS---> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...unter-herman-colt-missing-29-oct-3310.628938/ yet here into thread , because maybe just maybe 'FDev' agrees ( re: puzzle "a bit too good" ) and maybe just maybe they're trying to steer or inspire us to finally find the ultimate treasure hunt of RAXXLA before another 10 years pass?

Then again, it could also be totally unrelated.

I think think it's a Halloween treasure hunt.

So, if moving to a Steam version, do you have to delete all the existing FD installation? And if so how do you keep your character & possessions?

I think think it's a Halloween treasure hunt.

It is a Halloween treasure hunt, the solution to ‘witch’ has already been resolved by Cmdrs via a number of locational beacons.

I had mapped the locations myself on the off chance but they all fall just outside the area of interest, I thought there might have been something, but it’s too far removed and isolated.

The closest system of interest relatively was Fintan.

If it were so simple.

Negative.

Your profile on PC stays the same. I did not wipe my PC to accommodate the Steam key.

In fact when it’s working it actually uses the FD launcher. The Steam key essentially is just a mechanism to import patches.
