I'll give a more definitive - "No".
And agree, you can have lots of shield cells to boost your shield when you're in combat.

No, you can't fit a second shield generator.

Not after the beta ....

If you look down the list of options for a module, you will see some are marked as "already fitted", the entry is in red which means that it's unavailable.

Dumb question - I know you can bind a key for shield-cell .. does it trigger them all or one by one, and if them all how do you use them 1by1 ? :(

No, you have to bind each one in a fire group. If you use the bound button it triggers all of them at the same time.

And the Cobra was intended to be able to run two generators as well as the bigger ships. But im not sure if its still gonna happen because people just kinda quit talking/expecting it.

An interesting side note is that somewhere in the DDA's it was mentioned that starting with ships the size of a Cobra, you'd have multiple shield generators. The Cobra would have two separate shield generators powering two 180 degree hemispheres of coverage, fore and aft. You could then rotate a depleted shield away from the enemy in combat, favoring the stronger shield.

Larger ships like the Anaconda would have even more separate generators and shield bubbles. There was even mention of a tactic for small ships to fly "under" the shield bubbles of the larger ships and attack the hull directly.

None of that made it into the game, but maybe the devs are still thinking about it for the future.

In previous Elite games you could fit as many shield generators as your ship could fit, in those games more gens meant more shield power. But just get A rated shield for your ship type and military grade armour and you are good to go.

Search for populated High Tech or Industrial systems. You can use the galaxy map to filter them.

Afaik for combat you should fit the largest shield possible. But if you are a trader and just want some additional protection it's better to fit a smaller shield and get a larger cargo rack instead.

Shield cell banks

i have three shield cell banks on my viper totalling 11 recharges (in theory )....in practice i hit the hot key 5 times and all the cells are empty ??? no recharges left....it must be firing 2 at once ??? dont understand it....

Question regarding bounties and a further thought on the Shield Cell Bank

Hey chaps I was fighting an anaconda with 95k bounty earlier and had its power plant down to 1% when some sod of an NPC rammed it and destroyed it. I didn't get a bounty.

Is this supposed to happen or was I the unlucky victim of a bug in the system.

Secondly have NPCs had a form of shield bank implemented as twice today a sidewinders shields have recharged from down in under 5 seconds - the "blimping" of each segment was almost rave tempo.

No, if you have one fitted and try to buy another for a different slot I think it comes up with a message on the equipment sales list about 'module type limit'. I was looking at fuel scoops last night, with the aim of fitting a bigger one in a larger internal slot, and couldn't figure out at first why I didn't even have the option to buy any, until I realised it was because I already had one in a small type 2 slot and I would have to get rid of that before the purchase options for a larger one would open up to me. So for internal slots where you can fit more than one type of equipment, some components you can only have one of.

Is it possible to have more than one shield generator in a single ship?

Nope, one shield per ship. However, I could see this as a (future) possibility for ships size of Anaconda or larger (not in anything smaller though) - if not as making shields tougher, then just as a "backup unit" that kicks in if the other is shot down.

Just curious,

How do the ratings work? I take it A is better than B and 5 is better than 1? If this is the case, is D3 better than E4?

I believe they did talk about multiple shield generators for larger ships. Multiple shield zones.
